Dylan Shiel been ruled out for them. One less downhill skier we have to worry about.

So worst case players don't get up for Rd 1, here is my updated side prediction:

FB: Scrimshaw, Frost, Weddle
HB: Amon, Sicily, Impey
C: Mackenzie, Worpel, Ward
HF: Macdonald, Lewis, Hardwick
FF: Breust, Chol, Ginnivan
Foll: Reeves, Newcombe, Nash
Int: Maginness, Watson, Hustwaite, D'Ambrosio
Sub/Emg: Gunston, Ramsden, Butler, Morrison

Out: Moore, CJ, Blanck
In: Hustwaite, D'Ambrosio, Frost

Side still looks good and balanced imo.
Short down back and forward. Bombers are a tall team.

Need Serong or DGB so Sicily can float.

Need Gunston or Ramsden forward. Can’t have just Lewis when Chol rucks.

If we need more height down back D'Ambrosio probably misses out for Serong or DGB as you said. But Scrimshaw, Frost, Weddle, Sicily is a tallish line up.

Up forward I'd thought Hardwick would play a bit tall when needed and maybe Gunston can be subbed in 2nd half to give a chop out. Otherwise one of Hustwaite or Watson to the sub.

One things for sure glad I'm not a selector, it's not easy.

2MP really becomes a concern now as we don’t have anyone near his size and he gave Frost an absolute bath in 2022.

Going to need to win the midfield battle because if he gets the supply, he’ll kick a big score.

Back 6 to look like

Sicily DGB Weddle
Amon Scrimshaw D’Ambrosio

Would rather DGB get games than persisting with Frost

To be fair their downhill skiers absolutely ran riot against us last year.

Our mids need to apply the defensive pressure this year to make sure that doesn't happen again.

The Scum only have one trick (downhill skiing) but it an effective trick if the opposition lets them do it.

100%
He killed us.

Hmmmm Phillips would be handy for RD 1, similar height and weight to Blanck. Is the SSP window still open?

Regarding DGB, Serong I wouldn't bring them in and leave Frost out, they are still developing you don't want them to lose confidence being put into a matchup they are not ready for.

Imo.

Closes Monday arvo. We're cutting it fine, but should have time to sort out what needs to be done.

I’d have DGB in the team for sure, he is 12 months behind a similar player in Brodie Kemp who came on massively last year.

Players don’t lose talent, he will become a very good AFL defender. Burge talking about him was great, awesome insight into how the club is focusing on his strengths as a player now.

Ive been following the pre season form reports and from what I am reading he is still struggling with the same issues (lack of fitness, poor game awareness/discipline).

Not sure how he can justify a spot ahead of Frost or any other defender if he isn't showing improvement in these areas TBH. I think Seeing has probably moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

This year we really should be prioritising wins over development, Sam has even said that himself. For me DGB will need to earn his spot through some pretty solid form at Box Hill / pre season matches.

Peter Burge reported on the Hawks Insiders podcast that DGB has had an excellent pre-season.

I understand he wouldn’t come out and say that he’s been sh*thouse. But Burge reports he’s meeting all his KPIs in terms of the pre-season.

They haven’t had him focused on becoming an endurance athlete, but rather a burst athlete.

Have a listen if you haven’t already .

Just updated mine and have the exact same starting 22.

Potentially swap Gunston and Hustwaite for sub if we want a bit more on field experience and leadership to start the season.

Still cant see him playing in front of Frost / Scrimshaw / Serong from what I have read though.

The coaching staff are never going to say a player is struggling, thats why I like to read the reports from the BF posters they are more independent.

And pretty much all the reports are reading that whilst others like Scrimmers and Serong are flying on the track DGB is still struggling.

Like I said this year selection should be based purely on form / structural requirements.

I don't see the sense in continiung to pick DGB purely on the fact he was a top ten pick, that is immaterial now.

None of the posters who report here know if Denver is doing what he’s asked or meeting his KPI’s.

The idea that they might think he’s struggling, not that I’ve even seen anyone write that, is over the top.

Further to that though, to ignore Burge’s comments and take a bunch of no-name observations from over the fence as fact is nonsensical.

I keep hearing the same names being touted as being in good form on the track (Chol, Scrimmers, Hurstwaithe, Ramma, MacDonald, etc).

But I am yet to read anyone say anything positive about DGBs performances that I can recall which to me is a worry given he is in his what 4th pre season now?

KPIs are pretty nebulous things. I'm sure DGB has improved his KPIs but he still looks to be a long way from reaching a base level AFL standard of fitness.

What I am saying is I haven't seen anything to suggest that DGB has made enough improvement to be a wall up start to our backline for round 1. He still seems to have a fair bit of ground to make up and the clock is ticking.

None of this is controversial.
