Prediction Round 1 Best 22

Out of the 32 players that played JLT we need to knock out 10 to get down to 22, I struggled after 7.
Wells isn't even fit yet so knocking out someone else is going to be super hard, all of a sudden these kids are great depth.

The 32:

1. Alex Fasolo
2. Jordan De Goey
4. Brodie Grundy
5. Jamie Elliott

6. Tyson Goldsack
7. Adam Treloar
9. Jesse White

10. Scott Pendlebury

11. Jarryd Blair
12. Matthew Scharenberg
13. Taylor Adams
14. James Aish

15. Lynden Dunn
16. Chris Mayne
18. Travis Varcoe
19. Levi Greenwood
20. Ben Reid
21. Tom Phillips
22. Steele Sidebottom

23. Lachlan Keeffe
24. Josh Thomas
25. Jack Crisp
26. Josh Daicos
28. Ben Sinclair
30. Darcy Moore
31. Jackson Ramsay
32. Will Hoskin-Elliott
37. Brayden Maynard
38. Jeremy Howe

40. Josh Smith

41. Henry Schade
46. Mason Cox

Bolded are the 22 I choose, hard to unbold Goldsack and Blair, I prefer Aish over Blair but I think Bucks might go the other way around and have Blair in Aish out.

I think the 22 I chose will make us the quickest and the most dangerous, like we have been each game during JLT.

I can't remember us having a list so fast in a very very long time.
Picking a 22 is about getting the right player for the right role on any given day. Not necessarily the best play statiscally. Blairs tackling and pressure should get him a game, as should Goldsack...hence why have them both with Mayne in the side.

Its a fair question. Close call. I was leaning towards Goldsack mainly for (a) experience and (b) I was trying to forecast picking the team I thought the Pies would select not the one I'd prefer. Form lines in the preseason are similar.

Remember its a round one selection thread. The best 22 will be a fluid thing as the year progresses.
Maynard one of first selected no chance goldy gets picked before him

I can't see a situation where all of Dunn, Schade and Goldsack miss out. Reid can play as a lockdown tall defender but he is better suited to focus more on the rebounding aspect of his game and will need at least one of Dunn and Schade in the side to allow him to play that role.

Ignoring injuries and based on exposed form this is the team I'd put out for round 1.

B: Ramsay Dunn Goldsack
HB: Wells Reid Howe
C: Crisp Treloar Varco
HF: Sidebottom White Elliot
F: Cox Moore Fasolo

R: Grundy Pendlebury Adams

I: Blair Degoey Smith Phillips

The highlighted players are the ones I'm not sure about.

Ramsay gets the nod ahead of Maynard for me mainly for the reason that Maynard can really hurt us with his brain fades and clangers. Ramsay seems steadier as a defender and deserves a chance to show what he can do. If Wells can't get up for round 1 then Maynard gets the nod. Schaz is not ready yet and needs some VFL time under his belt. Goldsack gets in purely for his utility value and the balance needs of the backline. He gives us better coverage for the third tall. I have Dunn ahead of Keefe as the full back option. But to be honest.. this FB line and the other options we have for the spots don't exactly fill me with confidence. This will be our achilles heel. I'm praying Reidy can stay on the park because we are done if he goes down for any lengthy period.

Blair deserves his spot in my view. Controversial I know but he gets involved in a lot of our scoring chains does little Blairy.
Smith and Phillips are the next best performed players. Smith is now a no-brainer selection for round 1 if you ask me. I want to see him playing on the wing though to allow Sidey to go forward. Aish looked to me like he'd lost his mojo again in the JLT.
Mayne, WHE, .. didn;t show enough to get the nod for round 1. Mayne will be playing though.. so maybe swap with Blair or Phillips.

Of those five you have bolded as maybes I'd suggest Ramsay is a certain starter and Blair and Phillips almost certain.

Post JLT #3 here is my updated team for round 1:

FB:
Jeremy Howe - Lynden Dunn - Josh Smith
HB: Brayden Maynard - Ben Reid - Jackson Ramsay
C: Will Hoskin-Elliot - Adam Treloar - Steele Sidebottom
HF: Travis Varcoe - Darcy Moore - Chris Mayne
FF: Alex Fasolo - Mason Cox - Jarryd Blair
R: Brodie Grundy - Scott Pendlebury - Taylor Adams

B: James Aish - Jack Crisp - Jesse White - Jordan DeGoey

In:
Josh Smith, Will Hoskin-Elliot, Jarryd Blair
Out: Wells (inj), Elliot (inj), Scharenburg (underdone)

Time to accept some injuries/fitness are going to keep guys out of round 1. However, each of those guys and Sinclair are firmly in my best 22, just they will need some VFL time now. So it is annoying to have 4 of your best 22 already unavailable before a ball is bounced with a couple of injury worries still present for De Goey, Greenwood & Pendles.

Having said that Josh Smith was coming in regardless on the back of that game, he really has continued to develop in a way you wish all players would. WHE is growing on me, and you can't help to like a guy who uses the ball so well, we just need it in his hands more often and really wasted as a forward in many ways, so I have stuck him on a wing where he can use his speed and ball use.

Somehow Blair has snuck back into my team, he is just so small he walks in and I don't notice. To be fair to the little man he has had a solid pre-season and just keeps having a crack. Naturally I would prefer a fit Elliot or even a fit Broomhead but its just not happening right now.

I still have a knife over Aish, with Phillips & Greenwood threatening, but he did just enough to stay but he is one bad game away.

Henry Schade is making his case well, but he needs to come off the rookie list before he gets picked, certainly providing an alternative to Dunn.

Challenging: Tom Phillips, Levi Greenwood, Tim Broomhead, Henry Schade, Matthew Scharenburg, Tyson Goldsack

Injured but best 22: Sinclair, Wells, Elliot

Yep great side. I think the only minor change would be Phillips for Aish of Blair. Possibly for JDG if he's injured. He deserves to start round 1. His pre season form has been excellent.

Yes Phillips has been great and did want to slot him in somewhere - probably 50/50 for Aish & him. I think Blair is a more capable small forward until Elliot returns. Certainly an ideal De Goey replacement if he doesn't get up.

Is he really THAT good at this stage? Yes he's young and his a bright future but not sure he's automatic selection. Brain fades too much for me.
Being better than Goldsack isn't "THAT" good.

For me Phillips has outperformed WHE Aish Blair ect all preseason so it's a little harsh not to give the kid a game, especially when we know his fitness is elite.

I'd also have Goldsack in for Ramsay, Ramsay hasn't played much footy in a long time and it won't hurt him to build his match fitness back up with a few VFL games, Goldsack will give you a reliable performance in the meantime.

Out: Blair Ramsay

In: Phillips Goldsack.

Blair is only in there as a small forward while Elliot is out, I can't see Phillips being that small forward. He is certainly in the mix with WHE & Aish though no doubt, but have favored the more experienced guys who themselves have had OK pre-seasons and we need to see how they stand up. Phillips if he continues at this rate will force his way in soon enough.

Goldsack for Ramsay is a no for me - two very different players. Ramsay will be needed for the Dogs fleet of smaller forwards, his game against the Tigers was also very good. Goldy if he comes in as a defender has to replace a taller defender or Maynard. He may well do as he could be a good match up for Stringer or Crameri. Dunn I think should play on Cloke as he has a good record against him. Reid & Howe must play, Ramsay & Smith for smaller quick forwards, which leaves Maynard as the vulnerable one on match up basis.

Given the latest info from Pieland and if accepted as accurate the only likely players not available for best 22 are Wells and Sinclair and probably Elliott.

Have fun selecting a best 22

Oh You mean DeGoey and Greenwood available? I am getting popcorn ready.
As much as I would love to see Cox in the team, he won't make it . Neither will Schade. Why elevate 1 or 2 rookies in rnd 1 if we only have 1 LTI and neither of them fit the profile they are supposed to be replacing. I can see Keeffe getting a gig earlier then those 2, once he has got some VFL games under his belt.

I reckon Elliott will play round 1 but DeGoey & Greenwood will miss.

B - Ramsay Dunn Maynard
HB - Howe Reid Smith
C - Varcoe Pendlebury Crisp
HF - Elliott White Sidebottom
F - Fasolo Moore Mayne
R - Grundy Treloar Adams
INT - Phillips Aish Hoskin-Elliott Goldsack
Not bad at all. Do like.
Though id put Cox in at the expense of......someone!
Goldsack maybe? Or Ramsay maybe bit more game time?
And De Goey for Phillips- at this stage.
Just.

Hoskin Elliott and Aish must play imo.
Will only grow better each afl game.

Wouldnt mind afl made it even less rotations (20 less?) and introduce another two on the bench. Greater flexibility for all teams would be a win.

The idea to have all of Cox Grundy White and Moore in, its a force for the opposition to match up on, and will give Moore more opportunity to trouble the Dogs as he usually does.
Without Greenwood we need a hard man like Goldsack in the side. James Aish is too classy to leave out, and looked to be playing more physical against the tigers winning a lot of one on one contests with his marking skills to the fore, I would play him as an attacking midfielder not as defensive one and also give him a bit of inside work as that usually get him involved. Phillips run is great his defensive game is good but I am a little worried about his disposal so like 4#Didak#4 I would use Sidey and Varcoe in that role. Lets not forget the Buldogs are a hard side and Young Phillips was easily pushed aside the last time we played them. Having said all that there is still 9 days to go and a few training sessions in between for the match committee to adjudicate.
