Kicked a bag against norwood in a final
I think his issue is he overthinks things, or has been instructed poorly on how to have an influence. He's trying to be this little terror bulldog, which has it's place, but doesn't play to his natural skills. He looked very skillful at times when he got a clear run of games in the SANFL.

It's burned into my mind that early game in 2018 we had against Norwood where we had a heap of injuries so it was mostly the young kids playing. They put McHenry and Jones into the midfield in the second half and they went toe-to-toe with guys like Mitch Grigg and Matt Panos and just ran over the top of them and carried the team to a win.

I agree, I think Jones and McHenry have been badly coached, never seem sure of what to do and over thinking it. I also think Gooch and Poholke suffered this as well and it cost them an AFL career. Hopefully having the new coaching line up can save Jones and Neddy and the damage isn't too deep.

If we assume Talia and Doedee don't play week 1:

Brown Butts Kelly
Smith McPherson Hamill
Sholl Crouch Seedsman
O'Brien Laird Sloane
Lynch Fogarty Walker
McAdam Himmelberg Murphy
Int: McAsey Hately Keays Rowe

Moose at CHB, nah.

Worked for us in 97-98, when the closest thing we had to a power forward was Matthew Robran, and the closest thing to a power defender was Peter Caven.

Run and carry going forward from every position

Defensive pressure from every direction

Not the style our current list is heading towards however.

We did have the best full forward in the comp in 97. And I don't recall forward pressure being a hallmark either.

It's a really interesting question - what does the modern day prototype footballer/line up look like?

Richmond seemingly went 'new school' with a fast, mobile, small forward line surrounding Jack and pressured the pants off us in a grand final. Was this the new way? Then they went back to the future and recruited themselves an old school power forward and won themselves another couple of flags.

If both Talia & Doedee are unavailable, then Worrell should be in the side IMO (more upside than Kelly).

B: Brown, Butts, Worell
HB: Milera, McAsey, Hamill
C: Smith, Crouch, Sholl
HF: Lynch, Fogarty, Schoenberg
F: McAdam, Himmelberg, Sloane
R: O'Brien, Hately, Laird
i: McPherson, Keays, Jones, Walker (should be Thilthorpe)

And West Coast won a flag built on contested marking. And Hawthorn won multiple flags on possession kicking.

There is only one common thread IMO, which is that ball retention >>> clearance winning. The majority of recent premiers were below average at clearance differential and similar stats. They are built on maximising their possession chains, and minimising their opponents possession chains. One way or another.

Sydney was the exception, Hawthorn and Richmond are the rule.

Edit: I wonder if we will see another Leigh Matthews Brisbane style team again who just bulldoze the opponents in every contest. Would love to see the clearance differential from those times to validate if my memory of how they played is correct.

Ok but Modra was no 100kg Tom Hawkins Ben Rutter behemoth. Still an agile player who was good at ground level by full forward standards.

Our forward pressure was pretty good by the league’s standards at those times. Check out a replay it’s quite fun.

It wasn't why we won flags though, I reckon we kicked 17 goals straight in final quarters of those 2 premiership wins.

Blight was a very attack minded coach.

B: Brown, McAsey, McPherson
HB: Hamill, Butts, Smith
C: Milera, Laird, Sholl
HF: Sloane, Fogarty, Lynch
F: Rowe, Himmelberg, McAdam
R: ROB, Mrouch, Hately
I/C: Schoenberg, Walker, Keays, Jones

I'm happy to go small down back. Smith, Hamill and McPherson can all play an intercept role reasonably well. Only problem is we'll get destroyed by Hawkins and Cameron

Doesn't really matter too much if we do or not at this stage. It only gets easier after those 2.

Himmelberg actually played in defence a fair bit as a junior especially at the National Championships in his draft year is my recollection but it was obvious that Hamish and his scouts saw him as forward and that's the route we've taken with him from day 1.
It would be very handy if either of them (Frampton & Himmelberg) could develop into a swingman so that when needed they can play forward or back - it might help to elongate their AFL careers too

New updated R1 side due to injuries:
Injuries: Talia, Doedee Hinge?

Brown Butts McPherson
Smith Worrell Milera
Sholl MCrouch Hamill
McAdam Himmelberg Sloane
Murphy/Rowe Thilthorpe Jones

ROB Laird Schoenberg

Berry Keays/Pedlar Walker Kelly

Pittman did a pretty good job on Steward Loewe and Mark Stevens spent a bit of time on Wayne Carey.

Mark Stevens another one with good agility and good at ground level compared to others in his position.

Pittman our backup ruckman but he did do a great job on Loewe a couple of times. But he didn’t play in defence otherwise, perhaps because Blight didn’t want a 100kg behemoth bogging down his defensive run unless he absolutely had to.

Stevo, what a sad story that ended up being.

Injury killed his career

We actually had a half-decent lead up centre half forward for about 15 minutes. Were his knee problems self inflicted by sliding on them for every mark or was it unrelated?
Unrelated I think.
