R1 preview
Geelong v Richmond at GMHBA Stadium, 4:10pm AEST
A more exciting fixture to close the round than most might realise, these are two sides who are desperately looking to move up the ladder this season.
Richmond looks ready to genuinely challenge for finals for the first time, with its quick ball movement from a newly deep midfield into a forward line loaded with Courtney Wakefield, Katie Brennan, Sarah D'Arcy, and Stephanie Williams.
Without the ever-reliable interceptor Maddy McMahon down back for Geelong, Richmond's marking prowess will no doubt be front of mind for the home side.
Should they allow enough supply, the Tigers have the potential to pile on a big score, which would be worst case scenario for the Cats.
To combat this, Geelong needs to become more efficient out of the contest.
Winning clearances as they have done in recent seasons, but actually turn that into attacking drives.
Tip: The Tigers look the goods this season. Richmond by 12 points.

AFLW Tigers lock in Round 1 side
Richmond AFLW has locked in its line-up for Sunday's season opener against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

The Tigers will unveil five players for their first AFLW outings in the Yellow and Black, including two AFLW debutants.
Draftees Eilish Sheerin and Katelyn Cox have been named to make their AFLW debuts in the Round 1 clash against the Cats.
Mature-age recruit Sheerin was Richmond's second selection in the draft with pick No. 58.
A story of persistence, the 29-year-old missed her chance to get on a AFLW list in 2020 due to an ACL injury.
After working her way back to fitness, she was a standout in the 2022 AFL Sydney season with the Inner West Magpies, before earning her place on Richmond's list.

Cox, selected by the Tigers with pick No. 60 in the 2022 AFLW Draft in June, was included in North Melbourne's AFLW list as a forward/midfielder in 2021 as a replacement player, but did not feature in the season due injury.
The small defender is renowned for her hard work and explosive speed.
The 24-year-old will now wear guernsey No. 17 for the upcoming season, with recently-signed Tiger Amelia Peck to take on No. 36, which was previously given to Cox.

Sign and trade recruits Libby Graham, Stephanie Williams and Grace Egan will all run out for the first time as AFLW Tigers.
Egan, 22, a former VFLW Tiger who played the past three seasons with Carlton’s AFLW team, will be an important addition to the Tigers' midfield brigade with her hard tackling and composure with ball in hand.

Twenty-four-year-old Graham proved impressive in defence throughout Richmond's pre-season matches.
The former GWS Giant will add depth to the Tigers backline stocks in the absence of injured Harriet Cordner.

Williams, who arrived at Richmond via Geelong, was also lively during the Tigers' pre-season hit-outs.
The explosive forward, who has four AFLW games to her name, will line up against her old side on Sunday.
Skipper Katie Brennan will miss the season opener as she continues to recover from a foot injury.
Sarah Hosking will captain the side for the first time in her absence.
Richmond's three emergencies for the Cats game are Kodi Jacques, Meg Macdonald and Jemima Woods

That’s good we will need KB to win a few against the grain incl next week v crows

That game against the Crows, while hard, is gettable after watching them play Melbourne.

won't start like this line up

Ellie will go in the centre, Lavey will go to the wing

D'Arcy will go fwd, Lynch at HB

D'arcy is much better back - she needs the ball and player taking her there in my opinion. Cox and Lynch to go back as rotations I would think as we look a little too big back there maybe. Lavey should always play wing, has the vision, pace, the steps - she can be so damaging out wide. She and Dempsey as rotations to Sarah and Ellie would be awesome - Dempsey really evolved last season as the defensive winger.

Sheerin been a sensation as Stanley said she might be - our fwds just need to make the most of her piercing kicks
