Gringo would you play Phillips against Geelong , because I'm sure they will bring Geary , Ross in for that game.
Who would be the 2 players they would drop.

I would probably give him another run, it gave us outside run which Ross isn't providing this year. I think Geary will push someone out, and Ross will depend on injury. I think Hind is the only spot that Geary could really take. It would be pretty rough considering his recent form. Phillips would be out for Ross.

The put Ben King in their best. Funny because I though he was awarded some soft frees which led to some of his goals.

Greenwood didn't get a vote, I thought he was their best player to be honest. He was the one player we struggled to stop.

Long v Savage is threatening to become another Longer v Hickey. I was disappointed that Savage was dropped until I read a stat that the Saints kick long down the line to a 50/50 less than any other team in the competition. It's obviously a directive and Savage needs to work on that part of his game.If we are going to be a successful team then there needs to be pressure on all positions and hopefully Savage can provide that.
Sometimes you just need to grind out a win and last night was one of those nights. It shows that our maturity is building and we can find a way to win even when the keys stats are going against us. It's exciting to watch

Start rotating the players through to prep for finals.

Give Coffield a rest. Then Hill. Then Gresh...

Just one game off over the last few weeks to freshen up the body.

We won a game while playing pretty poorly most of the night.

Witts beat up on Ryder for the most part. I was nervous when Marshall went forward at the end. Feel like both of them should have a rest given the lack of talent in the Geelong & Essendon ruck divisions. Rest Ryder vs Geelong then Marshall vs Essendon. Play Abbott in both games and he can absorb some punishment.

Give Phillips another game. We need all the run we can get vs the Cats. They have some big bodies so we have to dodge that and play the game on our terms.

I'd start rotating the younger guys through and resting them as well.

Out -
Ryder (managed)
Coffield (managed)

In -
Abbott
Geary

That's what I was thinking, we have been winning games and hardly anyone has had an outstanding 4 quarter game this year. Steele probably the exception there. You have to rate Ratts coaching, there is something about us that looks very Richmond like. Our pressure game isn't as strong but our ability to have a lot of good players playing an exceptional system.

Sometimes winning is like alchemy, the some of the parts don't seem to add up to what they produce. The good thing is that if we get even half a dozen players having exceptional games we have an incredible amount of improvement left. We also aren't burning out though so maybe it's a plan.

I'm also going to go into bat for Hill, he's a slippery customer and several times last night he wheeled and weaved in traffic holding the ball up until options presented up ahead. His numbers aren't outstanding and he hates physical contact but his footy IQ makes us better. Phillips and him probably have similar statistical outputs but Hill's creativity and gamesmanship sets him apart.

Agree on Abbott, he will know their players and Paddy was looking banged up.

I think we have just made the Sexton bit up to justify it to be honest. Long is there for run and carry, he didn't do that. Anyway hope he plays a blinder next week, we need all hands on deck against an experienced Geelong who have Danger there as a small forward at the moment.
Never thought Savage was the hill you chose to die on.
Give it up gringo, watch the replay with both eyes, he played on Sexton for much of the game.
The only time I missed Savage was when Hind had some long set shot at least Savage would have kicked a point.

Let see if Long is dropped for Savage this week.

I reckon we pinched that. Couldn't win the ball out of the middle.

Jones, gresh and paddy well down.

And we still won which is a pleasant surprise.
It's those sorts of midfield performances that have me firmly with the lid on this year.

We'll get done by better and more experienced midfields in finals and butler etc wont have the time and space to come and save the day with lots of goals in a tight final.

Still a great win and great game of footy, both teams have lots to look forward to in the future.
Maybe we're seeing the beginnings of a rivalry similar to us and the cats 15 years ago?

Gringo your a loyal man to your favorite Savage , Savage no doubt will be playing again , so will Phillips.
We could well see Dunstan be back in the mix in 2 weeks , they said the injury might take 6 weeks to heal and it's already over 5.
I would not be surprised if Abbott comes in against the Cats and they give him a crack against his old side.

At times last night it definitely looked like a few players will need a rest in the next week or two. Do you think this 22 can go again against Cats? If players are rested, how many? Hard to see the sense of resting just 2 players - what do you really gain out of that?

And which players look like they really need a break?? Ryder to me looked like he might benefit (and against Cats so might the team).

It's a hard one, Gresham is so important with our lack of inside ball winners. I guess we have to watch and see who is looking tired. The young kids will get better recovery from games but probably get fatigued more. I hope we have manage it well. It will be a huge part of playing finals footy this year, surviving the quick fire matches.

Savage is far from my favourite. I think he should have been in the conversation for another run on form in that last game is all. I'm more interested in posters confused viewing of the game. I think Long stays in, he's clearly Ratten's first choice rebound defender but people went on about how poor Savage was then in a match where Long was clearly much more awful they seem to not see it, it was potentially his worst game ever. It's a strange phenomena.

I think being a young, fast, fairly outside team has worked massively for us this year.

Next year, assuming we are back to 20 min qtrs, a full week between games, 22 game season etc I actually don't know if this style holds up. It will be our primary style sure, but the development of this team on the inside and into being able to slow down and conerve energy is going to be critical.

This year though, players need to be rotated before Finals hit. Those last couple of weeks we are going to need to be flying at top speed to blitz teams out, apply that scoreboard pressure and get games on our terms.

We are sharks right now but if we stop swimming, we drown.

I watched it, he was hardly sighted and when he did he shat it up. I like Long but that was a stinker.

Its the 2020's, its all about team defence these days - very few hard tags in the forward line - unless you need to find a point to help you argue the other way!!!

Yes, Rankine was more impactful than Butler 🙄. Don’t care much for ranking/champion data, but sometimes they plumb new depths of ridiculousness

I'm not sure what they are trying to say but I think it's actually only rating players against themselves. Marshall had his season best game for example. Ben Long had his career worst game.

So Long was good? You have no idea if you think it was about stats. What part of his game was good. Which passage of play or evidence of him being good should I go and look for? When you want to bag Savage or Parker stats are relevant, when you want to justify why someone was sh*t not touching the ball was genius.
I never once mentioned stats for savage or Parker. I said savage just kicks the ball long to no one. I said Parker just doesn’t get the ball at all. Please gringo don’t make things up. Long was our second worst player but he did do a job on sexton. I tend to watch the game not look at stats unless it’s in the past and I can’t remember the game. And I have no idea why you are upset with me. I don’t pick the side. Our coach demoted savage out of the 26 not me.

Long didn't have a great game , they also only gave him 70% game time due to him missing 3 weeks , but his role would of been more of a lock down defender yesterday and Hunter Clark , Coffield used as the run and carry halfbacks.

Having the experience of Savage waiting in the wings just shows how good we are going, another thing our backline has been one of our best areas this year and really trying to fit Geary back down there is going to be hard.
Paton , Howard , Coffield , Hunter Clark , Carlisle and Wilkie have been sensational this year.

God, what about the guy in the game day thread who "bookmarked a loss" just before half time and 3 pts the difference. Ruins the thread.

That was me.
Not sure why you are being so dramatic about the situation. It’s like it’s the first game day thread that you have read.
If you get so bent out of shape about minor comments such as that you should do yourself a favour & don’t go into bigfooty game threads during a game. Far, far worse gets said with regard to players, coaches, umpires, etc.
