Do we rob peter to pay paul and put Randall forward?

I just think we are a clever tall away from breaking a game open up forward
Gould looks like the only dangerous forward we have, but she often gets double teamed, making taking contested marks difficult. It'd probably be Randall and Hatchard rotating up forward...and zero crumbers

The short answer is, we're probably going to just go with our current forward line (Gould, Munyard, Martin) with Hatchard, Randall, Charlton and Kustermann rotating up there a bit more often to cover Ponter. And we probably will lose precisely because of our inability to kick goals.

Alternatively, we might press the Waterhouse button yet again.

In an ideal world, we would have trialled a few more players up there throughout the season - I mean proper trials, not Biddell for the last three minutes of a match, or Sarah Allan for part of one quarter. Tonon, SLT, Tarlinton, even Varnhagen are all players who should have been given the better part of a match, or more, in our forward line to see what they can do. But we haven't done it, and it would be a significant stretch to try it now in a crucial final.

Realistically, if we're going to win the match against North, it's not going to come from our forward line
. It will come from being able to break even in the midfield, and win the ball in defence. If we want to beat North we need to keep them to only a few goals, and just hope that we can sneak a few back the other way.
Well of course we'll have to win the midfield, but from our season this year, poor goal kicking has cost us games and not put away teams that should've been put away. The only comfortable wins were against bottom sides. Crows need to be able to kick straight.

I like Waterhouse and what she brought to the team last year, but it's just not been happening this year. I didn't mind when Boileau was being played at half forward, but she's no longer in the team and didn't really get a good go at it. Tonon did alright, but was a terrible kick at goal. Varnhagen doesn't provide anything beneficial to the forward line. Sarah Allan has never kicked a goal in her life, so I'd rather put Biddell up forward than Sarah, but Biddell is so crucial to our backline. SLT was our leading goal kicked years ago, but not sure if that's an option anymore. I'd consider putting Hatchard up forward for the entire game and have Charlton play midfield and Randall rotating into the forward line.

Didn’t Tonon kick 6 for Glenelg in the sanflw once. She needs to be given a few more chances up forward. She can kick the ball a fair way also.

I just remember that terrible shank from 20m out that missed completely.

If that is disqualifying then our entire side is banned from the F50. Tonon is a pretty good kick in general, and can kick it a decent distance unlike many in our side.

She also struggles to accumulate the ball even when playing easier roles like running half back, so I'm far from convinced she would have any impact up forward - but it sure would have been nice to know by this stage of the season.

True, there have been some terrible misses from all players, Hatchard, Gould and Ponter included. Tonon has looked good whenever she's been involved in the play, but just doesn't get near it enough. Can't teach ball winning ability, unless it's just lack of pres-season/fitness in the younger players. You see Noffy runs from contest to contest. As soon as she passes it off, she's already run to be the player to receive.

Finals fixture has been announced, and we've got North Melbourne on Friday night at Ikon Park, at 6:45PM Adelaide time (7:15PM AEDT). That's probably the best possible outcome for us. Gets us away from Arden Street, makes it a night match which increases the likelihood of making it a bit dewier. And it means North only have a six-day break, for whatever that's worth. And if we lose as expected, it gives us a longer break before our semi final match.

You reckon they don't do goalkicking at training??

Missing simple shots at goal has NOTHING to do with Clarke and his gameplan
Poor skills have everything to do with a coach. For the record, I don’t think they put much emphasis on skills training at all. Pointless having any kind of a game plan if we don’t have the skills to carry it off. Fundamental I would think.

I reckon you'd be wrong, but then you probably don't get to see them train much up there.

I agree - maybe we do do skills but the bolded is an important lesson for any up and coming coach

Understand your squads abilities and skills. Dont try and cookie cut everyone into the same player and play a game plan above their level

This. They can't all be Marinoffs and Randalls. Gould takes most contested marks because of her 'bigger' hands. Sometimes when you see the players taking shots for goal, you can see how small their hands are. Some of them have really strange ball drops when going for goal. Jas Garner for example holds the ball right at the top but still manages to kick straight. Some hold it like they're going for a torp. It's weird, but whatever works for them I guess. I feel like the size of their hands plays a big role on how far their skills can develop.

I also thought leg strength would play a part in how far one can kick the ball, but Hatchard is one of our strongest players and she can't kick it very far.
