Autopsy Round 13, 2021: Hawks sink the Swans

I think we could condense the win down to: we finally hardened the f*** up. Where has this been for 18 months? With a debut leading the way.. loved every minute! As other posters have mentioned, had shades of the '14 grand final hardness in it.

Downers:
  • Sad that Ned Reeves didn't get a pop. Hoping he's good to go against the scum (sorry Cegs. you were great tonight)
  • Morrisson. Feel like he's one of our most improved. Please be a minor hammy!
  • Razor Ray.. doing the most hawk-hate-inspiring thing and paying us frees. Don't be fooled. He knew what he was doing. 😤😜

Uppers (of note):
  • I've been negative on Mitchell all year.. but I'll eat my hat and say I thought he was great tonight. Got on top of his old team (unlike Bud). That tackle! Maybe the way we played him tonight will provide some team balance going forward? Brishawk analysis on this please! 😁
  • Frost (and CJ with the 1-and-a-half-man defence) doing a number on Buddy. He was looking like he was going to get off the leash early. Frosty put the collar on him, gave him a bath and made him stay outside till he was dry.
  • The unsung. Even the players who were quieter stats/direct impact wise were still launching themselves into the contest. Felt like a real true team effort.

Uppers (general):
  • Everything else!

Genuinely gob smacked at the performance last night.
Really enjoyed the hard edge that the team played with. If getting a smack in the mouth at training put a lack of fear in this group to compete and perform the way they did, cracking in and actually looking after each other then it should be a weekly event.
We have been undermanned but I feel that being soft and selfish has had a big part of the season to date. There wasn’t an ounce of that during the game.

Cegs gets credit. I have/had written him off.

Moore is my guy in this side. I love what he brings to the team. I think he will develop the hard edge game play in line with the likes of Hardwick, Jags, Hodge and play a pivotal role outside the contest with a sprinkle of grunt inside when required.

TO... the entire AFL sees what he is almost capable of and its a scary concept of it ever came together. Please keep boxing, add another 5kgs and get an eye check. I’m still on the Timmy train.

Scrimshaw could be something special in the Pendlebury mould with 1 good pre season and commitment to the level.

Everyone could get a mention really for one reason or another....

Jai... don’t drink the Coolaid. Keep the country boy attitude and we will have a player like Cunnington for the next decade. Keep cracking in! Loved it

edit: Razor also gets a mention. fu** Palpey. About time he pulled on a Hawks jumper as I have hated the officiating over the years and thought he was a smart arse and a flog just to fu** with Hawthorn supporters.Very happy to see him turn the tables on the Swans

Frosty gave Bud a bath. I had Bud down for 6.
Yeah I am a fan of Moore. Not a superstar but a smart player. Hope he continues to improve

Just looking up at this page of the thread and some unnecessary comments excluding some posters:

I suggest that anyone on here who thinks that making critical assessments about Hawthorn means that a poster is anti-Hawthorn should re-think that position.

Otherwise:
1. The Board will be very boring; and
2. the Game-Day threads over the past few years would expose some "unlikely" suspects.

There is a massive difference between being critical of decisions and questioning the direction the club is heading... and being a constant whiny negative bore.

There are plenty of us in the critical group because clearly there are some issues with the club, but Id say we are also very happy to call out the good we see it. And there are some absolute gems in the team.

There are a few who constantly whine and it is tiresome. We won 3 flags in a row 5 years ago. They could use some perspective.

Like a funeral in the after match commentary

hahahaha
I doubt they figured it out though, even while sitting there in stunned silence, trying to comprehend what just happened.

What just happened is what got us top 4 a few years back but we lacked the top end talent/class to win the finals - but all through that year nobody could score against us - we just had no forwards like what our Captain has done the past two games. Amazing when the team plays as a team and to the game plan, but that'll happen with a heap of old fellas in the side who know what they are doing while bringing along - CJ, Moore, Day, some useless guy from box hill, Kosi, and Scrim. We just need Box Hill playing this is so important !!

Are we sacking Clarko still everyone?

Just looking through HFC instagram stories.

Will Day's pre-game predictions - "CJ is up & about tonight" and "Moorey is a chance for a couple of goals".

This guy is so good, he can to see into the future.

The Brad Sewell likeness with Jai is uncanny and he was a genuine champ.

probably my biggest frustration lately is we have been beaten in the contest in the middle and just haven’t been hard enough or nasty enough..

With Jai, jaeger, worpel, Mitchell, Phillips, shiels and Howe this should be a non-negotiable. They might lack polish but there wouldn’t be a harder midfield group - let’s at least maximize the impact of our strengths. We bullied Sydney into submission last night.

Teams should hate playing us.

What has been underplayed in this thread was our tackling across the board, not just Newc. That Mitchell lock up tackle in the third on Mills (maybe), and the Hardwick lunging run down tackle on Papley at the end of the game - they were things I haven't seen since Cyril and Poppy were at their peak. We were pinning arms, stripping the ball, being desperate.

The only bloke on the field who seemed to have trouble sticking his tackles was Wings and I'm not sure he had the right stops on because he was struggling to get purchase on the ground and was slipping over a fair bit.

It was Hodge too. He’s a dreadful commentator

Compare his special comments to Richo’s and you’ll be grateful that he offers at least some insight to viewers. Richo will tell you what you can already see in his ‘special comments’, at least Hodge will sometimes explain something to viewers that they can’t see by viewing the game on the tv.

People call Tobby Mr Almost or whatever is, but this guy imo, takes it to another level. He needs to pull his finger out.

The midfield last night was balanced, they didn't get ducked in to ball, where the opposition held there space. We trusted who was there, so defensively we were not exposed with opposition free players able to get easy exits.
Mitchell lead in this, in that he sacrificed part of his usual play for what was best for the team, and in doing so actually looked better.
I think a lot this year we have had players, trying to do it all, rather than doing what is best for team.

That second goal was very Poppy like. Accelerated at the right momemt, changed angles then snapped it directly through the middle. His tackle pressure inside forward 50 was great all night too, as well as the little deft taps on. Has had a really solid stretch of games recently.

16 disposals and 1 goal vs North.
19 disposals, 5 tackles and 1 goal vs Carlton.
18 disposals, 3 tackles and 2 goals vs Gold Coast.
18 disposals, 2 tackles and 2 goals vs Sydney.

I believe now it's all about finding him the right partner. Breust and Wingard will keep doing what they're doing, but Hanrahan is in and out and Morris hasn't quite shown enough yet. Brockman, Seamus Mitchell and Saunders are the ones to keep an eye on. Who can jump to the front of the queue from those 3?

Unsociable Hawks. Great to see it back.
Everyone under pressure this year played great, all you can ask for is a positive response to criticism.

With Jai harassing the ball it meant Worpel and JOM were on thier feet waiting for the loose ball or blocking for a teammate. Didn't think adding another midfielder would help the others gel but they looked way more balanced between contest and spread.

Unpopular opinion and I know what people think of him but is Razor Ray the best umpire in the comp? Clear with his decisions and explanations.

Sydney board complaining about the umpiring and maybe we did get the run of the green although I just thought it was well officiated.

Doesn't help when Carey can't contain his hate for the Hawks and calls out every decisions that didn't go the Swans way.

When it comes to terrible special comments, everyone stands in Darcy’s shade.

player A handballs while being tackled.
Darcy: he is one of the best in the game at that.
Player B handballs while being tackled
Darcy: he is one of the best in the game at that.

Great effort as mentioned by all the boys across the board the attitude, attack on the contest, team first mentally was noticeable. Whatever happend at training was the reality check they needed! The inclusion of two stars and a young bull seem to lift everyone, it was the team things that got it done!

Now the bar has been set! The truth will be the next month was this a once off and we caught a team off guard, or can we expect this level moving forward.

I'm so excited to have the Scrimshaw,Cj, Day combination back and can't wait to see the Big Sic return and added to this mix next year🖤
-three top 20 picks focused on the middle and around the goals and we might pull off the great Houdini.
