I well remember the trip I made to Launceston seven years ago, to watch us play Hawthorn at UTAS Stadium. It’s not a fond memory.
We were top-of-the-ladder going into that game, with the lowly Hawks languishing in thirteenth on a sub-90 percentage. Everyone had penciled in the four points.
Instead, the match turned into an unexpected struggle, and we were lucky to escape with a draw. It was a lesson in never under-estimating a lower-ranked opponent, particularly on their turf. Only four members of the team that day are still with us – Haynes, Perryman, Ward and Whitfield. Let’s hope they share their recollections of what went wrong.
Hawthorn goes into this game with another sub-90 percentage, but also winning four of their last five games. They led the Crows at every change this afternoon and are definitely no easy-beats.
Looking at the team changes, the return of Brown from suspension is the only bright spot. With Buckley, Perryman and Coniglio now added to the injury list, we need some really hungry and determined replacements. Here’s a possible line-up:
B – Aleer, Taylor, Idun
HB – Angwin, Himmelberg, Whitfield
C - Haynes, Wehr, Callaghan
HF - Daniels, Riccardi, Bedford
F - Hogan, Greene, Brown
FOL - Peatling, Briggs, Green
IC - XOH, Rowston, Ward, Cadman
SUB - Thomas
I’d prefer to start Angwin over Ward because he's much younger and should have more energy. Riccardi probably earns a start after his great effort against the Cats. Rowston has been consistent enough in the VFL to earn a recall.
We shook off the malaise of last month with the gritty win against Geelong, built on a return to hard-tackling and an outstanding performance by Briggs. I believe it was the first time this year we beat a higher-ranked opponent (although they’re struggling against Richmond as of writing – some perspective is needed).
At 7-4, we're reasonably well-placed, but need to go into this fully switched on, from the first bounce.
Thoughts?
