Autopsy Round 13, 2024 : Hawks slay the Giants

I wouldn't worry about punk playing for another team. If hawthorn have said no it's because he has told them he has had enough. A true hawthorn champion. Enjoy these last few games with him hawthorn supporters he is on his last road. We want to be yelling out Breeeuuust at every opportunity.
Luckyhawk knows Breust personally, if he's worried about him playing for another club maybe we need to be worried he might play for another club.

Seems his update was from 2023.

As of this year Breust is struggling to get through an entire game.

Seems highly unlikely he goes on in 2025, with us or elsewhere.

I am sure Breust certainly would have tried to get 2 years on the back of last years good form kicking 47 goals. He's struggled a bit for form and fitness this year, i'm not sure if it's just the injury but perhaps after sub again against richmond then the bye he can start playing full games again and get in form for another year.

Sometimes we are too quick to say a player is "cooked" if they are carrying an injury or out of form and close over 30.

Imagine if Burgoyne had a groin injury in 2015 and was playing poorly/as sub most weeks. We'd have written him off as "cooked" and missed out on 6 more seasons.

I find this fascinating and imagine decisions come easy or a best guess, I know this is obvious. Hodge was suspect in 2012 by some who jumped too soon and his Lions years were still quite decent. That physio type thing that he swore by seemed a masterstroke of a decision. I hope Punk sticks around and Gunners also but know it doesn't work that way. Is it only Rough who retired a one club player from that era?

Sorry for going a bit off track.

I also wonder whether Breust is still injured, or whether he has volunteered/been asked to play that role to allow our young fellas full games at BHH. I hate the sub rule, and can imagine coaches really finding it annoying with a young developing squad. Particularly given the weird BHH fixture.

I’ve been happy with his output this year. One more year, minimum $, specialist sub!!

Our improvement has come at a bad time for Breust and Gunston in a weird way.

Our forwards with goals scored this season:

Moore 21
Ginnivan 13
McDonald 12
Hardwick 12
Chol 16
Gunston 14
Breust 6
Watson 4
Dear 7
Lewis 3

It's fantastic to have such a good spread - and our mids have chipped in with a couple too - MacKenzie 5, Maginness 4 - Mass hasn't kicked one yet...

However for Breust and Gunston, with M Lewis coming back soon, and Scaife being signed (and what a find this monster is!!) - it means we can cover our two aging champions.

And champions they are - but it sadly seems that their careers will be finished on Hawthorns terms not theirs - as they would certainly get to play on next year if they wanted too - but the emergence of such a good spread of goal kickers has changed the landscape.

I knew Chol (16 goals) would come good but 12 from Hardwick, 7 from Dear and 21 from Moore were unexpected.

If it is their last year - and it's looking like it's the case, just reflect on how blessed we were to enjoy these guys:

Luke Breust:
289 games / 534 goals
Triple Premiership Player
2 x Minor Premiership player
2 x McClelland trophy winner
2 x All-Australian
5 x Hawthorn leading Goal Kicker
2 x International Rules caps + All-Stars Cap
Hawthorn Life Member

Jack Gunston:
251 games / 466 goals
Triple Premiership Player
2 x Minor Premiership player
All-Australian x 1
Peter Crimmins Medal x 1
Hawthorn Leading goal kicker x 3
Hawthorn GOTY x 1
International Rules cap x 1
(Should have a Norm Smith too IMHO)

These are two absolute champions of the sport - not just Hawthorn Champions.

We should enjoy them whilst we can.

So, after stating that Breust wants another year you now post that (cough) "you believe" it was last season and to add to that you suggest that he be asked when but (cough, cough) "he most likely won't know".

Gotya :thumbsu:

It’s time to get Watson in to the starting 18 and invest in his development at the top level. He’s the highest draft pick we have at the club (isn’t he?) and as such we need to get him to the top of his potential ASAP. I believe he has gained a lot of confidence from his stint at BHH - but also that he is clearly not going to be challenged enough at that level.

Not sure who would make space - but likely someone with a niggle rather than necessarily one of the last 6 picked.

Frenchy has had a brilliant year so far but looked a bit tired - may be him or Punky could do with a rest.

We did this in 2012 with Luke Hodge when he was battling a groin injury.

It is not important to me but just to clarify for you.

1. The first post stated - "The club has said no about Breust playing on next year atm". These are the exact words they used.

2. When asked to clarify they stated that in fact "it was last season" "they think" and if one asked Breust himself, "he may not know".

Doesn't seem to quite add up. That's all.

Finally got to watch the game, the whole team is doing some unbelievable things, still was noticeable how many little things improving will give us even more improvement across this year. It’s building so well now you just sit back and be impressed.

That stat that came up at the start of the game that’s Jais key stats have increased by 30% since Day has come back is pretty insane. Still so much improvement to come when you look at the list.

The most remarkable part of the growth has to be Dear, his so insanely raw and still
Impacting the way he is, really changed our forward line with Chol (Gunston back to his classic role to). Dear after a few pre season is going to be frightening.

Scary to think how many players we will have that can roll through the middle and ruck, that changes our match up play so significantly it can’t be underestimated.

Listening to David King on the means test on Sen he is not convince on us yet, thinks the only reason we are winning is we out number the players around the ball each time.
Yeah, saw that, I'm a bit torn in that as Sam has said that we're nowhere near the finished product but kingy seemed a bit " not convinced" about our game and talent at all!! Weird .

The bigger question that Kingy and others thinking that we are one or two short in top end talent is does the playing list have the talent to implement the playing style/strategy that Sam and the assistant coaches are striving for. I’m sure over the last couple of years the players we have drafted is aligned to the playing style Sam wants.

Kingy and even Derm the other day are not considering this which is really weird.

Quite possibly the stupidest bit of commentary I've ever heard.

That's almost like saying you're not convinced about us because the only reason we're winning is that we're kicking more goals than the opposition.

"Oh they're playing good football, what happens when they're NOT playing good football! Checkmate Hawks fans"

"Yeah, like, Gold Coast...if they win 10 games this year...i'm sure they win 13 next year.

Hawthorn, if they win 10 this year...will they win 13 next year? I'm not sure"

Hold the presses! Random Man Claims to Be Sure About Something Happening in the Future, But Unsure About Something Else Equally Plausible Happening!

Seriously, folks, if we're going to quote 'journos', can we make it only their actual analysis of past events or pieces of play, not their meaningless speculation based on their 'feels'??

Farkin shits me...this guy says we'll make the eight! This guys says we won't! Aww, turn it up! Let us know what you think! Click here and subscribe! Weeee!

It's not news, it's not insight, it's ****ing white noise, and the media landscape is full of it. Can we do our best to not fill this place with it too?

Apropos of nothing, quite proud of myself just now...

Teaching my year 11 psych class about cognitive bias, in particular, confirmation bias, and used it as a perfect explanation of the #freekickhawthorn thing ...at some length!

Can't change the world, but at least my class has had the drum!

Watching again, Breust was nowhere near the OOB kick from Sicily with the downfield free. Very clever to move in there and have the other Hawk players move out of the area.
Chol was closest but punky was only 2 metres away, socks down and fluro boots in the behind the kick shot from low level. Still smart of him and Chol though

We never write Breust of as cooked, we write him off as traded.
