Don’t mind Phillips, and don’t have anything really bad to say about him. But he is an endurance runner, not much more. Just too vanilla, and In a year where quarters are shorter, that advantage doesn’t really help. Don’t think he should really be in our future plans unless he’s depth

i was saying in the pre game thread we needed to keep Bytel in the team.
Bytel may not have helped change the result, but his hands in close are so good and he doesn’t make look like he gets flustered.
an extra game against an inside mid heavy team would’ve been good experience but oh well..

F#####ck, that was frustrating!!!
Just give it to Sinclair if we're going into fwd 50, he is clearly the most composed, by streets.
We'll miss finals at this rate. We can't lose these games.

King has been out of touch since the Essendon game but he is young and is key to our structure

But the Midfield needs to be smarter in how they deliver the ball to him, Andrews and May are 2 smart defenders and they showed Max how AFL football is done.

This is where Ratten and Co need to bring some spice to the game plan

People have realize Max King has played 14 games and he is taking the key defender , because our key forward in Membery is playing the worst football of his career.
King was only meant to be a help this year not the main target.
King is taking the heat - he did have a shocker but we have to be realist with this kid.
I just hope he can start taking marks , he is getting to it first but they not sticking.

Not picking Carlisle was the worst selection mistake we have made this year - there must be a reason , a lot of players need to lift - we suffered tonight because we had to many passengers and our goal kicking let us down where Demons were good kicking for goal.
The outcome could of been different even with half the team not playing well.

Clark 8 touches ,was unseen along with Hind 5 possessions and our guys like King 3 touches , Membery 7 , Battle 6 is not going to win us games.
One of the biggest let downs for me is Billings , he should be playing better than what he is.

Anyway we are under the pump now , it will be touch and go with finals now because we really need to win 2 more games and we have WCE and GWS too play.
Looks like it will be the last game of the year which determine if we play finals.

For those suggesting maybe we should've given King a rest, that would be fine if we had another key forward option, which we don't (and please don't say Abbott).

Battle? Marshall?

I think people are being increadibly unfair on King he has had a steller first year for a kpp. But seriously he needed a break 3 weeks ago and we need to not be relying on him on take 6 contested marks a game.

Bit disrespectful to Butler
Butler is more of an offshoot as avenue to goal.
Membery marks the ball on the odd occasion it’s licked to him, especially when it counts.
bulter was great, don’t get me wrong, bitches not an AVENUE to goal.
Ling will be awesome in due course. I just think criticism of Membrey in the current environment is very, well, stupid.

Alright, I’m gonna have a rant because I think as a fan after that effort it’s fair.

We were dysfunctional for about 75% of the night, what we were trying wasn’t working, and we changedvery little, whether that was coaching or players not getting the message we’ll never know.

But our long bomb entries with 2-3 players flying and no player at the fall of the ball left them with easy defensive 50 exits, just unaccountable and easy to play against.

The persistence of King on May where he was out positioned and outmuscled in contested long bombs was clearly never working. To the point where blockhead Richo & Darcy were even commenting on it for most of the game and yet our coaching couldn’t see it wasn’t going to be happening. We push Marshal up forward for the last 5 - 6 minutes and see contested marks and much better contests on May. Just obvious. We had the two rucks, why not give Marshal and/or Paddy more forward time? It worked for both of them when they went up there.

The bounces and throw ins, Steele was our go to with the occasional chop out from Jones. We need another mid with decent inside game in the team, I know Gresh, Dunstan and Hannebery are injured and that really hampers is but we can’t have Sinclair, Billings, Hill, Phillips and Clark all around those contests, it’s lopsided. If Bytel was fit he had to be there in hindsight, even if he doesn’t do heaps he’s still going to shovel out a few handballs.

I’ve been critical of Ross like many others but honestly he provided a decent spread from the back of stoppages and the occasional contested ball. Happy for him to stay but we need someone that has a more inside game.

Geary, I know it’s been done to death but this year and probably a bit of last year he has lost a fair bit of his speed and agility and that was his upside: he could close to get to contests and would spoil or outmark players his size or smaller. We cannot play him and be a high level team with his main asset now pretty much gone. Coff can take his role quiet handily now, we should be looking to have Carlisle if he’s fit or even Savage in instead.
Forward entries, lots of bombs from around 70-60 metres out, I know everyone has complained about it in the game day thread but the other thing to consider was, almost no one tried to keep running/pushing and even have a shot from around 50. We don’t want to revert to the Savage/Newnes style of long shots regularly, but what we had wasn’t working, thought it was summed up perfectly by Long towards the end just indecisive and eventually pressure came and he just munged a pressures kick 40 metres up in the air that hung for about 4 seconds and gave no one a chance.

If the coaches were clear in their direction and we still played like that then players need to get dropped. We can’t just rely on a few players like Steele, Butler, Paton and King (earlier in the year and with decent entries at least) to just pull something out of their ass,we might get a few wins that way but it’s not a reliable system.

Losing the performance of Membrey this year who looks off has also hurt us now teams are putting effort into King. His goal kicking is off and the percentage of marks from contests are downI would think.

We also can’t carry guys who have very quiet nights like Hind, Kent, Clark and even Ross to an extent tonight. They have to improve their off games to the point where they are still providing something.

Rant over.

We've got a bloke named Carlisle. He's kicked a few goals in his time. He is bigger than May, perhaps he could have stood his ground and taken a bit of the focus off King?

He has been sh*t, are we seriously defending him because of his age? Let him go back and learn how to take a contested mark.
Bold strategy George. Wish ya all the best with it.

Can't agree.

You don’t trade Bruce woth the intention of king being a backup. Give yourself an uppercut.

Because all you complain about is his marking, any credit for his 19 goals or is that still not up to AFL standard?
Good on him. Still doesn't take away from the fact he struggles to hold his position in marking contests and can't grab the thing to save his life despite being 202cm.

I'm saying that's fine - my issue is why play him in the side if he is going to dish up performances like this. Two weeks now he has given us absolutely bugger all. We are trying to play finals. Why we carry players is beyond me but even worse the fact people defend his recent performances because of his age.

Why wasn't king used as a decoy or at the very least surely our mids can realise May is all over him and look for other options?

Battle Membrey Ryder Marshall... they all looked dangerous when May was away from them

Shocking loss. So much on the line and we reverted back to the shithouse form of previous years. One step forward 2 steps back

Because members is so bad this year that he's a liability.

Would have been nice to

a) not put it on his head all night
b) if you are going to put it on his head, maybe Hind or Kent could be about to at least contest the crumb. Non existent tonight
c) maybe put it out in front of King occasionally? Too much to ask obviously.
Inside 50 delivery was atrocious - May, lever and pig would have been having a slab on most intercept marks at half time.
Dumb football

Just on the gameplan. All opposition coaches coaches know that we are just banging it at King and are hoping to then crumb goals from spoils.

Early on this work well and goals from within 25 m were a feature.

Opposition teams now set up for this. King is being slaughtered when he has a good opponent and our smalls are rarely nearby.
