Autopsy Round 14, 2023: Richmond v St.Kilda

Howard was s**t last year too. He's a very poor footballer. Gresham the same, selfish and hopeless with the footy. We've known about these things for years.
He was s**t when we traded for him , i said on here years ago port sucked us in big time and we fell for it

The obvious quick fix in the midfield is giving Steele a rest and he comes back his old self, and somehow by some miracle Zak Jones gets back and stays fit and firing.

In the long term we need to pray that the likes of Windy, Owens and Pou become A graders in there.

The situation with Steele is very frustrating as a supporter because we need his best out there. He must be hating it.

I guess a positive from the game is we got slaughtered in the middle and still got ourselves in a position to win but stuffed our lines. So other parts of our game seem to be working but without a good midfield you're pushing the proverbial uphill.

I think even with Steele at his best last night the Tigers would have still dominated stoppages. Its a collective effort starting with the ruckman, Marshall battled manfully but Nankervis out muscled him. Ross and Crouch had a dip but are slow to react and limited in what they bring. Without playing Sinclair and perhaps Stocker in there we really dont have much else. I know some believe Clark makes a difference and in that slug fest last night he probably would have. But how many games do we play in those conditions and on a dry track Clark is far too slow for me.

Its a huge hole in the list that has been so for years and the club have been in denial if they think otherwise! Thats why Im coming around to the idea of losing Gresham, if we can attract real midfield talent?

Tigers pressure and constant movement was too much for our midfield and put a lot of pressure on our defence. Our defence which has been a best line struggled last night, even Wilkie wasnt at his best and had a couple of costly turn overs. It didnt go well for the rest when our most reliable player was making simple errors.

I wouldnt be surpirsed if RTB drops some big names next week. I think Howard & Gresham will come under real pressure of being left out and Steele rested, ins Cordy ?, Bytel and Peris to debut.

The main reason some are getting a free ride is that there's nothing at Sandy to bring in.

It's easy to forget that Jones, DMac, Coffield, Hayes, Billings have been unsighted this year. Add Clark unavailable again to that list. If some of them were available I think we'd have more selection integrity.

We have the ability to move players around.
We can bring in Paton, so Sincs or even Stocker can play more midfield.
We can bring in a Membrey or a Cordy and play Owens more midfield.
Hell I wouldn't mind dropping Gresh and seeing what Connolly or even Peris could do.

If this is the year of exploration. Let's explore what we can do with the available players.

Found it baffling that he wasn’t thrown in there on a wet night last night, especially when he wasn’t getting a touch up forward.

It’s hard to play Owens as a midfielder when your relying on him to be the 2nd ruck, that’s position needs to be filled as a priority so Owens can get into the midfield permanently.

Hopefully Hayes can get back out there for the last month or so.

Could also play Sharman in Mitch’s role, as he has a big leap which would be useful in the ruck contests.

Just watched the presser. Worth watching. Interesting that he said that we responded well to what we were told to do in the 2nd quarter (make the ground “bigger” on transition) and that that was starting to work really well, but then the rain came and put a stop to that, and also implied that we then didn’t adapt quickly enough to said rain.

And he’s bang-on about the competition being incredibly even.

When you’ve got the 3rd-bottom team having beaten two top 5 teams and had another win of 116 points in the last month, and then a team as talented as Carlton in 4th-bottom, then Sydney 5th-last and Freo 6th, it’s probably the smallest gap it’s ever been by far between 5th and 16th.

Also very interesting what he said about Steele. Said he’s definitely a bit banged up, but was absolutely adamant that his knee is not a significant issue. So much so that he said he asked Misson where this noise that Steele’s knee was bad was coming from.

Dougal ****en Howard.
He absolutely shits himself when he has the ball.
Our midfield was killed, but we still had a chance to win.

Positives were
Pou - he was so clean when it got very slippery.
King - before it got wet he was playing well and angry.
The other kids are still standing up.

Negatives
We need a better midfield brigade.
One gun to push out a seb Ross type player would be great.

Milney didn’t captain flags and win brownlows, milney also did a lot of stuff off field that Cotch and Selwood didn’t.

I understand disliking them because they’ve been incredibly successful but people saying they’re “unlikeable” for random non disclosed reasons smack of jealousy.

Oh I can disclose the reasons. Selwood ducked consistently to win frees, and whinged at umpires far too much. Also that whole Geelong side was unlikeable because they had a vocally negative attitude towards their competition, which was us for a lot of the time. I dislike it even when our players do those things but Geelong made it a whole team strategy.

And Cotchin is pretty well-documented for doing grubby things on field. This is a classic that we should all remember well . But there are plenty of others.

Conversely, look at someone like Luke Hodge. He wasn't particularly disliked by supporters of other teams despite captaining 3 flags. I don't think your argument holds water really. You can be a successful captain without being disliked.

Cotchin is/was a sniper and at times a dog and a protected species.
Duckwood = yes he was. Great player and captain though.

For a mob that have had so much success in recent years Tiges supporters are a miserable bunch of pr**ks.
Had a less than average run with the umps but they booed each and EVERY free paid against them.
They boo in unison when a goal review clearly shows Hill and Nas touching the ball before it crosses the goal line and a behind is correctly awarded 🤪

Yup, we have known for a couple of seasons we are a key back another quality mid and some support for Marshall short.
The injuries at the start of the season were a blessing, coupled with the comp didn't know how we would play had us winning. Comp has worked us out so it gets more difficult.
However, Owens, Naz, Phillipou, Hammer, Stocker, last night Windy are the young basis to work with.
We finally have some awesome kids to build around.

Yeah JB as frustrating as last night was you can see there is still hope with the young kids you mentioned add King , Higgins and Butler there is plenty for the future. I’m just disappointed in our senior players that are doing what they have done the last few years

I’m also really worried with have SOS as list manager time will tell but I have no faith in him playing the long game and doing what’s right for the club

Hodgey was an angel now was he? **** me thats re writing history.

From what I heard, Harvey said to Lyon that Owens isn't a midfielder but a third tall from a press conference last week. So I'm doubtful that Owens plays as an actual mid anytime soon.
A previous comment talked about Gresham and his selfishness, he does cheat that he lets his defender run free whilst pointing instructions to have another teammate man them up when he is not working hard enough defensively. It was evident on the 2nd Short goal and unfortunately it has happen on other occasions. Butler has to do most of the grunt work in that forward line and he had a fantastic game. I know he is still young but Ryan Byrnes needs to do a lot more in those conditions too.. Not laying a tackle and only having 10 possessions isn't good enough for 86% game time. I'm worried that he might be exposed on the big stage as his tackling is his biggest weakness. This team needs some serious retooling/refreshing to take the next step, especially in the midfield. I think we'll still make finals this year but I doubt we'll make an impact. Most premierships are won with a great midfield and we don't have that right now.
