Someone famous once said that “It’s never as good or as bad as it seems”.

Tonga Bob says “That was bog average”.

Yeeeeah…luckily I was only able to catch the last ~10 mins but had that sinking feeling in the lead up we were primed to cop a post-bye loss. Overconfidence isn't befitting of Freo fans.

From the looks of it, the defence did ok in trying circumstances (that inside 50 discrepancy is brutal), but we were soundly beaten where it matters in the midfield.

The list is still at a stage of development where we can draw lessons from these type of losses so hopefully we can rebound next week. Top 4 just got a fair bit harder though.

Also I’ve pulled over on a freeway from Ballarat to Melbourne to put this thread up. I’ve given great effort [stares in some players rn]

Beaten by a better team today. They were tougher & wanted it more when it counted.

It’s a way off our best team, the likes of Acres, Walters, Chapman, Switta brings so much more smarts & flair.

Meanwhile Fyfe is pretty much a liability till he gets the rust off.

Interesting times for selection with players coming back.

Trash game, awful.

Mundy is so obviously cooked too.

I legit hate that fraud Rory Lobb too.

Hughes on a wing? Mate if we're gonna play Logue back why is Hughes playing at all?

Banfield... he's a spud.

Fyfe should've played for Peel last week, if it's good for Tabs to do it then it is for Fyfe, he obviously needs games to get into form.

Thought Henry was good, only one that really tried to take the game on.

What really concerns me is the four times the pressure has been high we’ve shat the bed and lost convincingly.

we cannot have Mundy in any more. Defensively he’s the equivalent of a meatloaf at an AFL grand final…he could sing once but now he needs four autotuners.

I don’t think we’re really good enough to take it out this year, we’re not consistent enough…Mundy has to make way for a developing midfielder.

Banfield was fine for the chances he got.

freddy was shit, Schultz was shit until the third.

henry was great.

Tabs did his bit, Lobb stank

due to my own travel only saw the first half but doesn’t look like much changed, quite simply can’t afford to lose the midfield battle as badly as that. at the risk of shooting bambi, I’m not sure about barra going on next year he’s starting to look done

Yep - 2 clear trends. We can’t handle high pressure, and the Fyfe/Mundy/Brodie combo does not seem to work.

Soft effort all over, lucky it was only 5 goals.
-24 inside 50, -14 clearances, -10 tackles even with 49 less disposals. They brought the pressure after a bad loss and we didn't respond save for about half of the 3rd quarter.
Brodie was probably the only mid who really tried but even he had some shockers

Embarrassing but not unexpected since we are always terrible coming off the bye. I just wish they made it easier for us by giving us Norf.

I said Fyfe is not ready after his game at Peel and I stand by that. He should not be playing. Mundy is done. It is startling how much he has dropped off and I said to my Collingwood supporting barber after about Round 5 that this should be his last season. I stand by that.

Hughes is absolutely shithouse and should not be in the side. He adds nothing.

Logue should never have been moved back. We needed that extra marking target ahead of the ball because Lobb was offering nothing.

The smalls should hang their heads in shame. Only showing up for one quarter in any game is inexcusable but in a game with as much on the line as this had is a downright disgrace. Banfield should not be anywhere near the team. I hated his 4 goal game because I knew it would be enough to keep him in the team. 17 tackles inside 50 to 6 is ****ing piss poor and a worrying trend because it was similar numbers against Hawthorn.

The mids getting absolutely pantsed is not on. The amount of times Carlton just waltzed the ball out of the stoppages was embarrassing. The lack of 2 way running was shown up again against good opposition. Darcy getting killed by De Koning was shocking but not entirely unexpected as he has been hot and cold all season. Mind you, if they could start paying ruck infringements that would be nice.

Hopefully this game was an aberration but I have fully expected us to drop off in the back half of the season so I am worried it may continue.

Um that was a tough watch.

Not sure of the positives tbh. Our defence was gallant despite the large i50s.
I think our best today were Tabs, Brodie, Young & Pearce.
Brayshaw and Serong never stopped trying but unfortunately the bounce never went their way and were constantly under pressure.

The big disappointment was the ruck & midfield. I know TdK will be a premier ruckman but ultimately Carlton are without their #1 ruck yet we still were well beaten in clearances.

What to do with Mundy and Fyfe? It’s always going to be a hard call tapping greats of the clubs on the shoulder. But since Fyfes return the midfield has been lacking, perhaps it’s unlucky timing as Mundy is struggling atm. Maybe Mundy needs a longer rest as he was playing great footy earlier in the season.

Out-coached and out-worked.
Slaughtered in the middle! losing stoppage after stoppage, contest after contest, makes your eyes bleed, need to break even to have a chance.
Fyfe & Mundy so so bad.

All I can hope is that the club has learnt something from that, but given the lack of adjustments mid-game I am not betting on it.

I get what you're saying here but I don't think it's as cut and dry. We've been placed under pressure plenty of other times this year and got away with a win, even as recently as Hawthorn and Brissy.

Most of the time we can deal with it, sometimes we can't. It reflects the fact this team still has some maturing to do.

day garbage GIF

The backline was fantastic in the first half with the absolute slaughter that was happening on ball. I don’t think our midfield has been beaten by a bigger margin this year.

I don’t see how we can keep the Fyfe and Mundy combo running in the midfield anymore.

I was only happy for Henry, Tabs (starved in the second half) and the defence.

They looked like they were running in concrete shoes and Lobby’s lack of intensity when in the ruck directly led to two blues goals, just a yuk game.

Going to reply to mattis117 here: What part of our midfield performance today showed we're ready for Top 4? Away from home against decent opposition and we didn't really look threating. It's a testament to our defence we hung in so long but our mids just aren't at the same level as our contemporary rivalries and it's not even close.

Credit to the defence though: They did bloody well with the frequency and delivery that was being reigned down on them. Pearce did exceptionally well on McKay

Well I was having a shit time watching this game and just as Carlton were stamping out our small resurgence late in the third, my tough as nails sister pushed her first child (and my parents first grandchild) out into the light.

Never been so happy after a loss.

Plenty of storylines after this game, once again will be very interesting to see how the club responds this week.
