Going to reply to mattis117 here: What part of our midfield performance today showed we're ready for Top 4? Away from home against decent opposition and we didn't really look threating. It's a testament to our defence we hung in so long but our mids just aren't at the same level as our contemporary rivalries and it's not even close.

Credit to the defence though: They did bloody well with the frequency and delivery that was being reigned down on them. Pearce did exceptionally well on McKay
We literally beat Melbourne and Brisbane by having the better midfield on the day. One bad day doesn't spell disaster. We're one of the best in the comp when our guys turn it on.

Then we brought Fyfe in and didn't drop an inside mid, we f***ed with the program and now don't look as good in the midfield anymore

The team that beat Brisbane and Melbourne would have walked over that Carton team and won by 50-60 points.

Our same weaknesses were exposed today, so we didn't really learn anything we didn't already know.

+s
  • Our back 6 were remarkable. Under siege all day. Needed the midfield/forwards to do their bit.
  • Henry went better than I thought he would. The only times we looked really good were when he was getting involved.
  • Aish, Brodie, Banfield and Brayshaw fought on manfully.

-s
  • Our forwards didn't defend our entries, but they didn't manage to attack either. Ideally, you want both, but surely you can manage one or the other?
  • Reading the ball off hands or when it hit the deck was appalling except in our D50
  • Taberner shouldn't be trying to kick 45s or look inboard. He doesn't have the foot skills - yet someone is telling him to do it. Needs to stay either inside 50 or cut that shit out of his game.
  • We missed shots at goal that didn't even get close. Need to have a look at who's on the list, and how to address this in the off-season.
  • Smashed at stoppages even though we played all of Serong, Brayshaw, Brodie, Mundy and Fye. That's truly baffling.

Maybe we just don't have the cattle yet - which is OK. At least it puts the Jackson talk to bed.

Hmm. Melbourne definitely was a big achievement though you can argue their situational changes in that area (i.e. illness.). Brisbane though we've seen are adequate at best in the midfield and are best in their forward line (competing head to head with our backline strength).

There's a definite fragility there that is undeniable and indefensible. It can look the best in the world one day but woefully inadequate the next. I just don't think they're there yet at this point in their careers (and a scrutinised eye needs to be kept over their development)

It's worth remembering that 3 vital cogs in our midfield, Brayshaw, Serong and Brodie are all still pretty green by A-grade midfield standards. That's not to excuse them today, you need to be switched on every game or you get destroyed.

I can't really comment too much having not seen much of the game but it seems almost universally agreed that the combination of Fyfe + Mundy rotating through has thrown out our defence at stoppages and clearance. That's probably magnified by Darcy getting beaten too.

Longmuir has some very tough calls to make on the horizon, especially if we continue to struggle with them both in the side (I'm assuming Mundy will be retained for the time being).

Team just look unbalanced all over the ground. Backline held up well (except Ryan-he had a shocker) given the amount of ball coming in.
We can’t not play Fyfe/Mundy in the middle at the same time and likely not in the same team. I’m willing to give Fyfe another 4 to get back up to speed and NO, not at Peel.
Fyfe and Banfield can’t be fwd at the same time. No defensive pressure. I think Fyfe needs to play the 3rd fwd and Banfield goes back to Peel.
Henry to the Wing in the absence of Acres. Serong and Hughes didn’t work today.
Bad loss and some big holes exposed with the outs we have.
I’ll reserve any further judgement until after next week. Anticipate a very strong response.

We were never in that game - even when 2 goals up in the first quarter.
You won't win many games when so many players had down games. Apart from logue, Pearce and Henry, pretty much everyone else had a bad game for their standard. Especially our midfield.
  • Darcy beaten badly by TDK. Am hoping Darcy can respond. He is a good young ruckman.
  • Backline very good but missing the run a little bit. Chappy needed.
  • Fyfe will get back to being pretty good I reckon. Saw glimpses of the old Nat Fyfe in the last 5 minutes of the game.
  • I think that is it for Dave Mundy. Just too slow and not good enough defensively.
  • That was as bad as I have seen the small forwards play this year. Schultz, Freddy, Colyer and to a lesser extent Banfield had shockers. Carlton seemed to walk it out of the backline.

5-6 goal wins at home for Freo and the Blues in the two games this year. I'd saybwe are pretty even with them. I ducking hate Carlton but they are building a good team.

We're building something that will contend for the next 5-6 years. No knee jerk reaction required.

Henry did some nice things with the ball but you can’t flame the fwds for lack of pressure and not include him in the mix , just stops as soon as the ball is past him like he always does

Yes they are but it’s all just opinions

I think the fact we were above them going into this game shows they're still struggling to play to their full potential. They're a much better side all over the ground on paper than us other than our stout defence. Seriously cannot underestimate how well they did today with the quality and frequency of ball coming down on them all day!

Embarrassing but not unexpected since we are always terrible coming off the bye. I just wish they made it easier for us by giving us Norf.

I said Fyfe is not ready after his game at Peel and I stand by that. He should not be playing. Mundy is done. It is startling how much he has dropped off and I said to my Collingwood supporting barber after about Round 5 that this should be his last season. I stand by that.

Hughes is absolutely shithouse and should not be in the side. He adds nothing.

Logue should never have been moved back. We needed that extra marking target ahead of the ball because Lobb was offering nothing.

The smalls should hang their heads in shame. Only showing up for one quarter in any game is inexcusable but in a game with as much on the line as this had is a downright disgrace. Banfield should not be anywhere near the team. I hated his 4 goal game because I knew it would be enough to keep him in the team. 17 tackles inside 50 to 6 is ******* piss poor and a worrying trend because it was similar numbers against Hawthorn.

The mids getting absolutely pantsed is not on. The amount of times Carlton just waltzed the ball out of the stoppages was embarrassing. The lack of 2 way running was shown up again against good opposition. Darcy getting killed by De Koning was shocking but not entirely unexpected as he has been hot and cold all season. Mind you, if they could start paying ruck infringements that would be nice.

Hopefully this game was an aberration but I have fully expected us to drop off in the back half of the season so I am worried it may continue.

Banfields 4 goals game pretty much won us the game? He was not the reason we lost today! Wow!
