Was a great four quarter effort from the team with less rotations(I hope Starcevich and Berry are ok). Hipwood played one of his best games ever. Was involved all night with 14 disposals, 10 marks and a goal. He was domiant pushing up the ground. Charlie and Zorks recaptured some form and Neale and McClugagge looked at their best too. Lyons and Rich were as reliable as always. I thought Ah Chee, Bailey, Answerth and Lester all had big second halves and really stood up in the 4th quarter when the team looked a little gassed with their running, work rate and defensive work.

Payne showed some good signs, just needs more experience which he will get. Was super disappointed with that Rayner miss but that shouldn't take away from how great a game he played outside of that one major brand fade. 3 goals and his body work around stoppages was brutal and top notch. Our young team is stacked with young talent and we've added another young gun with Coleman who adds such a point of difference with his skilful composure under pressure and his ferocious tackling ability. Keidean needs to stay in the senior's. Special shoutout to McCarthy for grinding out that game with a nasty cork and to Robbo who looked back to his crash and bash best!

Overall very happy to get a big win against our Queensland rivals and continue to build momentum heading into the finals.

Good to see Rayner getting rewarded as hes continuing to do a lot of little things right. The first goal, change of direction and angle to set that up. A couple of good blocks into set others up for center clearance. Knew he was going to get blocked when going back, made the contact to draw the free, clever knock on to set up a goal etc. Really solid game

Hipwood is teasing us, really showing signs of exploding with the obvious thing holding him back, great signs, hopefully keeps this up.

Charlie looking good in the higher half forward role. Looks good delivering the ball to the other forwards.

Coleman was good in patches again, can see why we matched the bid earlier than most expected.

Payne’s first 10 minutes were great, hopefully he can be the positive from Harris’s injury.

Rich, Zorko, McCluggage and Neale all had good games even by their usually high standards, lot of other solid contributions too.

Injuries feel like they’re mounting up, hopefully Berry and Linc are fine for next week. Starc youd think should be right.

Happy to have a good win after a few tight ones.
Lyons good too.

Umpire Rosebury finished off the game by missing the worst HTB for the night. Witts takes the ball out of a throw in, runs 5 meters, gets tackles and doesn’t dispose of it. It is holding the bloody ball as soon as he is tackled you utter utter utter moron. I just don’t get how an Ump at the highest level misses something like that.
Nah the rule changed

I thought out defensive clearance work was exceptional tonight even in the absence of Andrews, Payne was intercepting everything coming his way in the first quarter. Much better goal kicking performance even though we missed some sitters topped up by Coleman handballing to McStay from 10m out with no in front😱 (mind you he setup some goals too), saw glimpses of beautiful transition in the first quarter especially that opening goal from Zorko. In the end I was just hoping that Fages took our stars off the field to prevent more injuries after a wretched run. Sydney will definitely test us next week in the contested ball, boys might need to wear body armour!

The challenge will be to play Payne and Harris together successfully.

I reckon a tall defender alongside Harris with Gardiner as the third tall is the coaching staff's ideal set up. They had that spot earmarked for Adams (who admittedly had more flexibility to play on different forwards), but Payne could fill that role nicely.

Didn't they change the rule last year so rucks can't get pinged for holding out of a rucking contest? There were a good number of shockers especially when you consider the holding against mcluggage they paid
Nah the rule changed
The rule used to be that if you took the ball out of the ruck and were tackled at all it was HTB.

They got rid of that.

Now it's treated as per any other possession, so taking possession, several steps, and then not disposing of it is still a HTB.

I concede that Archie is an important player to have in the side for structural reasons pertinent to Fagan's game plan when we have the likes of Stef and Fullarton out injured but I have to be honest, I am looking forward to us hopefully recruiting a decent ruckman this off season to replace him as depth or in the starting 22 next season as we will be that much better off having another capable ruckman who can contribute around the ground and/or up forward. I am praying Stef is ready to go for the finals series. Nothing against Archie personally because I love him as a guy but he isn't up to the standard.

Every game is a test but the Swans are pretty ordinaire this year.

Very happy with that win.

The boys really lifted in the second half to cover the two rotations down.

Our aggressive tackling seemed to intimidate the younger Suns

Another pleasing thing was consistency with which we got to aeriel contests to effect spoils.

We did it with such regularity that often the Suns players dropped pretty straightforward marks when they herd the footsteps coming. The old perceived pressure thing.

Lastly, despite us winning the tackle count 50 to 36, we couldn't seem to buy a free for HTb but got punished many times for the same thing.

Remarkable

Thought he was tackled straight away tbh.. and I thought the umpiring was generally deplorable tonight

Thankyou Reddit for this meme

Honestly, I was looking away for the exact incident and was repeating the previous comment - my main aim was explaining away the misconception that taking the ball out of the ruck makes you immune to HTB because of the previous rule change. It doesn't.

I thought that was a very thorough win, without being clinical. It would've been nice just to convert a few of those other easy ones just for confidence. That said, to do it with 19.5 players was impressive. Hope the injuries aren't a problem but inevitable this year.

Neale, McCluggage, and Hipwood were great; Zorko (although a bit sloppy at times), Charlie and Mitch all had better games. Rich was also a little wayward at the beginning but super solid defensively and creative with his footwork.

Twas a really shame Rayner shagged that goal up, he was looking really dangerous and his sting ran out towards the end. Bailey's lift was so important in the second so we didn't run out of steam.

Also, we need to pump games into Payne because he had very promising moments and just needs time at the top level.
