Autopsy Round 16, 2021: Hawks fall over against Port

Hawks tried very hard to win it for Burgoyne. A few umpiring decisions went against us but overall Port is a mature side at a different stage of development to the Hawks. Great experience for some of the younger players and also shows the difference players like Day & DGB will make to this side. It's games like this that you learn and grow from not playing soft poorly coached teams.

Worps, Hardwick and Bramble all played really well.

Awful coaching playing Nash in the position he’s struggled in. He showed promise when finally put into the middle.

Cegs wins plenty of the ball but his ruckwork always puts us at a big disadvantage.

Our ball handling is woeful. How we always manage to fumble the ball on the ground and drop marks is beyond me. Needs to be a focus over the off-season.

Congrats to burgers for 400, just sucks we put in such a poor performance for it.

Greaves isn’t up to it either unfortunately. Decent at VFL level but shouldn’t be in the seniors.

certainly struggled tonigh when heat was on. Fumbled a lot, poor decisions.
Really, next week he’s out with DGB back in.
Good depth player, but if he’s best 22 next year either he’s improved out of sight or we’re battling badly

Yeah the thing with reeves is that with his height he is always a good chance to win the hitout. Ceglar seems to have been effective recently against Hickey and the clueless GWS rookies by edging them under and grabbing himself a clearance but lycett and draper didn't allow it and beat him.

He wasn't awful but will only ever be breaking even at best against good afl rucks. Ned Reeves at least in the hit outs will be able to challenge, gawn, nic nat, Grundy etc..

I say we give a few guys a last chance and we have a harsh off-season to get more players in.

I won't name names but a few who played today that I don't want on the list next year or am happy to trade for a more needed type.

Our effort today was poor and we needed this to not get sucked in from a few wins. Our mids are good players but rarely win as a group. Our rucks rarely win. Our key backs we need depth. I've come around to Hartigan and he has gotten better each game. Could be more than a stop gap remember we got lake at 31 for 3 years of contending, if Hartigans body holds up he will be a similar age in 2023 when we premiership certainties again.

Watched Phillips closely tonight at game and he just doesn’t get out of a trot, no pace whatsoever.
Only Bramble and Nash averaged a higher constant speed than him.

Firstly, congrats Silk. Been an absolute star.

tough game to judge, got dudded regularly in defence by trigger happy umps, had no fight in the second qtr, then lacked the class to really fight back.

thought Bramble, Omeara, Cegs (frustratingly) Hardwick and Worpel were among our best. Not sure on order there.

the Nash thing, as I noted earlier makes no sense, but what can you do?
Disappointing end, but still looking at a top 3 pick

Cegs held his own I thought. The whole midfield was smashed in the first half, that’s not all on him. Thought he broke even with lycett. But I like reeves because he gets first hand to it more often than not, and he’s the future. Sorry cegs.
I agree, was attempting to look forward.

The adjudication of ruck contests makes it easier for moronic lumps like Lycett and That Fat Cheat Mumford to throw their weight around in the contest without being penalised. Ceglar doesn’t have the craft, the athleticism or the tank to overcome that, and never will.

Was at the game, and considering the outs we had, if Port could only get that far ahead of us with the very, VERY ugly umpiring that favoured them once the ball got into their I50, they are nowhere near a flag! 😂 You can fight me on that opinion, but that’s what I saw from the wing.

We weren’t clean, and we clearly lack speed, but once again considering the outs we had, the team fought hard. Just think, bring back in all the sidelined players, and we are a very different side indeed.

Congratulations Silk on 400 games, your goal against Geelong in the preliminary final will always be the first memory of our threepeat!

I love Burgoyne, thought he should of gone into the middle at some point, would not of hurt what was being put up. He isn’t retiring on that game or effort will go to top 3 on the games records shortly…

Few positives, a lot of negatives, thought the biggest issue for the game and something really pathetic was the effort in the first half, and we are devoid of players wanting to attack the game that it has such an impact on how we play, the worst part of the team it’s just so bad.

Here’s my two rants:

- Clarko has undone a lot of good work by bringing in players doing well with some form in the VFL to play positions they struggle in - direct impact on team balance, pressure and how we move the ball. This part here is the most worrisome for me.

- The umpires Are pathetic and if their is not some serious behind closed doors words being undertaken the players will lose out, the amount of blatant bullshit dinky frees paid against us vs clear frees not paid for us is a pathetic, and being at the game was even worst with the blatant holding and pushing on our forwards vs ports who got them paid off barely anything. I would back the players to switch off and just go the man for a game if it happens again - if their going to to pay that sh*t at least make them earn it the other way - that game is the worst I have seen
You are spot on with the Umps. I absolutely believe our players have dropped their bundle on a number of occssions this year due to the crap officiating. Does not help when Dermott says the ride we got from the umps v Sydney was a disgrace. Fmd we get stiffed on a weekly basis and he highlights that game and drops his club in it! Follows it up with a jab at Clarko calling him an ego maniac. Piss off Dermie.

Grainger-Barras
Lewis
Brockman
Reeves
Pick 2 or 3
A lot to look forward to with that list mentioned above.
Just see out the year and get some more development into the kids.
On tonight’s game, I thought we fought it out well. Always going to be outclassed when we had so many out. Liked the development of Bramble.
Don’t get bringing in Nash and playing him in a position that he has proven on many occasions he can’t play, although would have been hard in that forward line tonight. Has been playing well in the middle at Box Hill, so why not play him in the midfield tonight.

Congrats Burgers, great career, but it is well and truly over. The game has passed the great man by.

Our ineffective midfield was once again ineffective.

Congratulations to Burgoyne on a wonderful achievement. The rest of the game was as forgettable as most of our games over the last few years

He was conspicuously absent in the first half. He just goes missing, as do too many of our guys when the oppo makes a run. Not enough leadership. Instead of going into our shell we need to attack when this happens.
His kicking is just really poor. So often he just butchers it/miskicks it/ zero penetration

Mitchell showed some glimpses at Box Hill today. He could be an x-factor.

Brockman put in a solid display and would have to be in the mix to play next week. We desperately need some speed and class inside 50.

Reeves is developing nicely in the VFL. There’s a lot more talent on the list that haven’t been sighted yet.

Yup and why particularly for hawthorn because who knows why… that the ‘unsociable brand’ of footy we should be playing is so effective - not like they can try give away more frees because then the free kick count would be ridiculous - this is the game that broke the straw for me in terms of umpiring, and if it’s not improving make it hurt…

The fact we have DGB going off with a concussion last week and not even a murmur, while worpel sits out a week for a legitimate tackle and the club does not say a single thing is pathetic. Who is flying the flag here because it’s game destroying and pathetic for the fans

I never ever want to hear that Nash has something to offer to this team.
We played one man less tonight with Nash out there. He was putrid and no where to be seen. So sad to know he is getting games in front of Brockman, Downie and these likes. I am completely done with him. Hopefully Clarko has now realized how woeful he really is.

Totally agree, I am pretty optimistic about our future, and think it will develop faster than a lot of people think.

When you see the replay you'll feel a tad silly, he actually gets a decent punch in the face. Probably no suspension but a free kick for high or holding.

Awesome effort by Silk

Just watched it. Gets clipped in the mouth by Hardwick‘s hand. Literally an entire second later (he didn’t react to the initial impact) he throws the head back like he took a bullet. But the most comical thing about the whole situation was the free kick was paid for a holding the man decision for an action your players did all night.
