Autopsy Round 16, 2023 : Hawks get the Blues

Super flat about today’s performance, expected much more. Stating the bleeding obvious here but we are missing Sicily massively, a young team like ours can’t afford to have their best player missing. I’m still ropable that he copped the same punishment as De Goey. Absolute BS.

Rubbish application and attitude throughout. Was a glorified training drill from start to finish. Not 1 pressured passage of play for any of their scores. Just a shambles of a display watching from level 2. They showed us zero respect by halfway through the 2nd qtr and quite rightly so. There not even that good we just didn't even try and when we did something happened and we scored regularly (3rd qtr) proving the point there not much chop. I get this is a process but your not going to get people turning up to games if you look disinterested as a team. Alot of supporters were leaving way before the siren all saying the same thing. Needs to be addressed quickly our attitude week to week.
At half time 6 of their 8 goals were from turnovers. We’re our own worst enemy most of the time.

Went with my boys today with low expectations.
First half was an abomination!
North/WCE would have put us to the sword today.
Beer was my closest friend in the first half. Used halftime as a breather and carried out an autopsy.
Nothing seemed to go to plan (if there was a plan)
The backline was like a ‘madwoman’s diahorrea’ ….all over the place. Amazing what no Sicily can do !
The forward structure or lack thereof was evident from the start.
Kicking balls deep into the pockets or straight to Veitering vas unacceptable!
Not once , not twice but three times
The Ferg Burger had dots from the right hand pocket (which he is a right footer) and subsequently kicked 3 points.
Whereas our little blue bagging opponents choose to centre most of their opportunities!!! Go figure
The lack of defending, especially from Scrimshaw , was inexcusable!
Continually allowing his opponent 15-20m head start was perplexing. Enough that I consulted those around me, who in turn were just as perplexed!
The manhandling of Lewis was more evident than a nun in a brothel. (But I digress) To his credit he got on his bike and worked hard to make himself a target.

After halftime (the 3rd quarter at least) the boys seemed to show some ‘ticker’ - the crowd responded in kind and we were actually looking like an AFL team there for a bit.
Blues got to iffy goals (inc a Frosty gift - will leave it at that)
The score, albeit irrelevant, was getting a little more respectable - until the men in blue decided “not on my watch”….and the game again faded away.
The damage was done late in the 3rd quarter, and the energy at the start of the 4th quarter seemed to evaporate.

Players that impressed me :-
Weddle after a disappointing first half, seemed to find it in the second half. This kid has no ceiling.
Day - my goodness this guy oozes Hawthorn. Needs lots more support.
Worpel worked hard
Ward - tried hard like Worps
Seamus - for a newbie, he gives 100%

Players that failed to impress :-
Frost - bad day, really not sure what he offers which in turn impacts others
Reeves - today he really should have dominated but didn’t- around the grounds offers little
Wingard - apart from an inspirational piece of play leading to a goal - he is treading water
Scrimshaw - bad ! Decision making , kicking choices/efficiency was doing my head in. He is slow, looks lethargic and often makes poor choices.
Breust - cameo appearances only, which for a senior player is unacceptable
Greene - harsh but not sure he is AFL standard ,needs replacing next year
Nash - not sure if it was a bad day at the office but I thought he stunk it up (sorry Tassie Cryptik)
Butler - did nothing to justify more senior time

Apart from a 3rd quarter glimpse, I left deflated and unsure how our team looks for 24/25

Blues are basic at best but we made them look a Top 12 team - and that pisses me off.
Scrimshaw was very good in second half

We seem to win the hit outs but lose the clearance, completely ridiculous, I feel Reeves hasn't been the same since his shoulder injury and it has limited his overhead marking. We have Sicily in defense, Day in the middle and Lewis in the forward line and if any of them are missing we are a rabble. No Impey did not help at all. What are we doing with DGB, if pick 6 in the draft can't even get a call up into this team...I feel for Frosty as his heart is in it. Greene is a very good kick for goal, from the goal square, outside of that he has some issues that hopefully he can get away from, I would still rather Kosi played as he is another tall forward marking option. I don't recall us scoring a goal in the first half, that is shameful.

I didn’t get up until 3 in the afternoon and missed the game because I was up watching Australia destroy England in The Ashes all night. How did we go? Where was the game lost? According to all reports, Josh Ward was BOG for us, which just goes to show what a great talent he is.

The Indigenous jumper is Hawthorn too.
Come on SYL. Yes we all know mate. Home game against Carlton and we don’t wear our traditional top. For a club going through a racism scandal it comes across as very poor. Look at us, we wear a indigenous top, we arnt racist
Over correction at its finest

Forgot the best bit of todays game

McKay marked 20metre out - straight in front ! (Certain goal)

Proceeded to turn sideways to do an ‘around the body kick’ to make sure

This fired up the Hawk supporters, and Harry subsequently missed !!!!!!!

Not only did the ‘window licker’ miss - he actually didn’t make the distance which Seamus duly marked !!!!

The joy, the cheers, the jeers ……what a flipping spud that McKay is
(Can hear blues supporters channeling Casboult to come home)
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Made my day

Sam's presser is a good one.

+35 hitouts, -11 first possessions. Midfield well beaten. Also lost 10 of our 12 1-on-1's defensively.

Had a good chat with the players pos-game about their start and lack of energy.

Was sitting with the box hill boys today. They headed down to the rooms at half time and soon came up back out...

Sam was fuming at half time and rightly so.

I don't think losing games is the biggest issue , somewhat expected, but, the thrashings and non competitiveness almost every second week is what really disappoints. We have a long way to go yet before we ' Mature'into a cohesive group. Carlol are NOT good neither are gold coast but we find away to make them look top 4! Sam has some really exciting talent at his disposal but now, he also has a mountain of work to do to get this group playing some competive and consistent football going into next year and beyond.
