We’ve shown more killer instinct and clutch play this year than any year i can remember since the old Magpies days. Sydney, Dogs, Saints, Melbourne, Essendon were all big clutch wins. We kicked a goal from 55 basically on the boundary a few weeks ago to win.

Losing to what is the best clutch team the AFL has ever seen by 2 points doesnt change that. We absolutely have to beat Adelaide and Geelong now though
And even if we have to play our qualifying final in Brisbane, I don't believe we need to fear going up there. Win that, and anything is possible from there.

Last night I felt shattered, felt like how I felt after the 2020 prelim. I’m still so pissed at all the misses and costly errors. The only positive is it’s not a final and we still have a chance to redeem ourselves. We can only afford to drop one more game I reckon as I can see Brisbane only losing to Collingwood for the rest of the year.

I understand where the poster is coming from regarding Hinkleys messaging related to outcomes. It’s frustrating as a fan watching someone project near enough is good enough. It’s a professional sport and he’s a professional coach. Near enough is not good enough, and while you can take a lot from losses like last night the prevailing sentiment should always be that a loss is unacceptable for a team expecting to contend.

It’s a clear sign that Hinkley is far too comfortable in his job.

but regarding the other opinion I disagree with the poster. You’ve covered it well.

We used to have to rely on a single player (gray).

Now we’ve got several players who are capable of coming up big in moments, and we’ve done it a bunch of times this year. It’s been a pleasure to watch.

I think it’s obvious that killer instinct is driven by generational talent and not a coach driving it though. That talent can even lift those around them but Hinkley has shown he cannot instil it in a group over a long period of time he’s had to do so.

Darcy Cameron had 20 hit outs to advantage. His previous best was 13. Put in a decent ruck like Hayes and you get a different result.
Darcy Cameron for **** sake..

Just imagine how good we could be with just a decent ruckman, even a darcy Cameron..

Lycett needs to take a good hard look
At himself, if he’s getting toweled up by darcy Cameron then he needs to be flicked.. I can take being beaten by a top ruckman but to not even break even with darcy ****ing cameron is disgusting

You played better on the night and thought you were harder generally at the ground balls. Rozee great, Houston very good and SPP great. Butters attack on the footy is insanity for a man of his size. A truly remarkable footballer.

For those of you who hate Hinkley, you can't be wrong. Either he wins the big games this year and as fans you will be delirious, or he doesn't and you can say told you so. From my view you're clearly going in a new direction with new, young, very impressive players. And as our Malthouse experience shows, it's not always a good thing to shake up the team when its heading in the right direction. I know head coaches carry baggage, but they should also get better over time too.

It may not be this year, it still might be, but that Drew, JHF, Butters and Rozee mix should take you very far in the next 4-6 years.

Did you just compare 3 time premiership coach, 7 time grand final coach, all time coaching games record holder, premiership player and hall of famer Mick Malthouse to career loser, hillbilly, greyhound slaughterer Ken Hinkley?

He’s really not. He’s a sharp shooting forward. Played his junior footy as a forward. But Hinkley only sees half backs so here we are

He played his junior footy across half back

Hinkley may or may not be all those things, at least he doesn't have a whole wall sized portrait of his own face in his own living room.

And Malthouse lost plenty of big games with us. In fact his premiership came after about 10 years.

Just watched the Hinkley post game presser. His glass half full approach and blind optimism is exactly why he needs to be replaced. He has conflated the idea of a one goal loss in a game that could have gone either way as being just as meritorious as winning that same game by a goal.

They're doing a lot right, and to suggest otherwise would be ignorantly foolish. But there's a killer instinct that this team lacks which all of the top teams in history have. And until they can fix that (and imo they won't fix it under Ken) they are going to be forever the bridesmaid.
Yeah I think this is one of those games where as fans we can take the good out of it and not be too unhappy with the effort or result.

But the players and coaches should be furious they just let 4 points go and should be going through it with a fine tooth comb to rectify it.

This list is capable of winning the flag this year. Anything less than that is a missed opportunity.

Sorry to be controversial but you can’t put that loss down to Hinkley
