How good was Ward copping that big hit and then jump right back on his feet. Had every right to go off after that but he’s harder than a cats head that kid.

Port tried to rough up a few of our younger players and it just backfired spectacularly. Ward, MacDonald, Newcombe etc aren’t interested in taking a backward step.

That sequence I think in the third quarter where he somehow got an arm in to punch the ball out of a Port forward marking it and did it all without giving away a free was just superb.

The back six inspires a level of confidence not seen since the glory days. Man on man they hold their own, apart from DGB who is a work in progress. We may be exposed by the gorillas, but on the other side of the ledger, the attack from the back is exciting.

Josh Ward is not being selected on potential, he's genuine Best 22.

Mitch Lewis has been coming good for a while now, but tonight...amazing game, and selfless too.

Ned Reeves has a heart to match his size, just did not stop.

Some issues remain with the midfield, but they will gel and then the clearances and contested ball will come. Consider that the ball was in Port's F50 more than ours, and that shows how good our defence actually is.
Transition out of defence was excellent

I’m loving the positivity after an absolute belting like that. I just hope it’s not setting our expectations too high, and we quickly become toxic when, inevitably we get touched up in a few games along the way.

But what a pretty faultless game. Couldn’t pick a bad player out of anyone, all played their role and honestly I’d say all beat their men. They might’ve had us statistically, but where it mattered we were infront by a long, long way!
The majority of us know where we’re at mate. We’ll have more games like this but some on the other side and f ledger too. Being so young with an uptempo game style it’s inevitable so we need to enjoy the wins while we can.

Had $100 on a win as thought Port didn't have enough strike power. Wish I had the guts to go over 36 points but I'll take it. The backline was incredible and so refreshing to see attacking footy not backwards, sideways rubbish. Early days but Mitchell it seems has the players respect and enjoying the freedom of playing with speed. Gunston and Lewis immense. Bring on the Blues!

I still think there is a place for Hartigan against the gorillas

Idk how many times I have to repeat this in threads, but if Hartigan isn't good enough to get picked against teams WITHOUT the best forwards in the comp he's not magically going to be good enough to be picked to play against the teams WITH them.

A chance here to take a look at where the Hawks defense ranks in the AFL right now

Rebound 50s: 1st
Meters Gained: 1st
Intercept Marks: 1st
Contested Marks: 1st

While our youth is getting the attention tonight. I thought out senior players were also outstanding. McEvoy, Mitchell, O'Meara, Gunston and Breust were all great it shows the value of having awesome established players to help bring on the next generation
A balance of the two is key, and we're well on the way there...
