Review Round 2 vs Sydney

Going back to the commentary thing and the criticisms of Sunday's coverage... After watching a lot of hockey, basketball and baseball over the past 7 years, I find the concept of wanting commentators to be unbiased pretty intriguing. While I can understand there just isn't the numbers to justify separate telecasts and commentary for each match here in Australia, commentators getting excited about their team doing well doesn't have to be a bad thing.
Yeah I actually don't mind it - even don't mind Bruce when he is fawning over the crows in their games. Because at least he is even handed in calling the game if the crows are losing. Similar was Cometti who never hid that he was an Eagles fan but his commenting was very even handed.

Contrast to ricciuto who snipes at the opposition and whinges about umpiring when the crows are losing while he is commentating. Healy also did this during the swans game, constantly calling back to umpiring decisions after the play had moved on, even when some vision showed his whinging to be inaccurate.

In addition to all the comments here.

This is usually the only game I get to see in the flesh, and I mostly come away disappointed. The atmosphere at this game is so different to how I remember it being going to the footy. The silver hairs are the majority, the younger set seem more interested in how they look and talking about what they did on the weekend than watching the game (except when Buddy has it), and the kids with their incessant Citi clappers that drive you insane. I can't imagine Port home games playing Sweet Caroline, Wake me up before you go-go and Living on a Prayer as the quarter break entertainment - please tell me this doesn't happen.

Last year was so unexpectedly awesome, tempered somewhat by the fact the Swans ended up losing the next 5 in a row, that I went into this thinking that we would get close but not quite there. Before the game Buddy had appeared to be in that 2014 headspace where he was the difference between the teams, and I am still scarred by his ridiculous 70m bomb that eventually got them over the line in that game.

This game was more intense than last years by a long way. The tackling pressure was incredible. If you stopped to think, you were gone. It had to be instinctual. Get by one player and another one was there to take you out immediately. Dixon made some huge hits after Sydney players had shrugged the first tackler and he buried them. It was just beautiful to watch. The fact that our pressure numbers were off the charts is a testament to how this game was played by both teams.

Special mention to Clurey and Dougal. In the last quarter both players left their man to intercept at crucial times. On the replay you can't see how unreal the one Dougal intercepted was because he comes off-screen just as he gets the ball. But there were two Sydney players about to receive the ball, he left Buddy and sprinted 30m, split the Sydney players and got it out to another Port player and I'm pretty sure we scored a goal from it.

Finally I have to mention how great a player Buddy Franklin is. For Dougal to play him so well at such a young age is outstanding. His ability to spoil when it looks like he is out of the contest is first rate. But the play where Buddy got away from Dougal on the outer side in the last quarter, sprinted away, pushed over Houston like he wasn't there, and then pinpointed a 45m dart to the Sydney player inside 50 was one of the best things I've ever seen live. How a guy that big can do that is incredible.

Right on re Dennis Cometti he did it in an inoffensive way, where as you say Rooshitio usually snipes and whinges.

I get annoyed with Derwayne going out of his way to try and show he is unbiased by making stupid comments, eg in Sunday's game against the swans when he said `that could have been a throw by the Port player!' o_O when Charlie Dixon got the ball out of a pack in full view of the ump.
Russell was clearly guessing, he made that and similar comments a number of times during the game and virtually every time he got it wrong.

Buckley is good on 'Whateley' on SEN.

I reckon he would be a lot better than Judd in the media if he loses his coaching gig. Maybe they're grooming him?

Buckley on Port:
"Very contested strong side with a strong defence structure.
Won against a stronger (than last year) and more determined Sydney at the SCG this year.
Have a lot of grunt and the will to win, and talent.
Will be a handful"
Buckley was really good in the media before he took up the Pies coaching gig and destroyed his reputation. The sooner he goes back to media, the sooner he gets his reputation back.

Is it SPP's goal set up in no small part by Rockliff's h/ball. IIRC it was the goal that sealed the game. Todd looks like
he's totally 'bought' into us.
When Spp kicked that goal and the goal umpire went running it at first looked like he had missed. A guy walked past our table and loudly proclaimed that he had missed and we all groaned. Took a few seconds to realize that he was wrong.

Does anyone else feel that the 50 metre line at the SCG is still measured in yards?

Its 10mtrs shorter than any other ground i think. Too Short to be considered a footy ground compared to other grounds in the AFL. Sydney is always forced to clog up the game to make it a scrappy game. When they play at AO, its like they can breath and play a different style of footy. Size matters to the Swans.

Fair points about the crowd on a Saturday afternoon vs Brisbane.

Its one of those games where I wish we had printed tickets for each game rather than the membership card.

I'd be much happier if I had 11 printed tickets each year, one for each home game and if I couldn't make it to a game I'd go out of my way to give away the tickets to someone who could. The current "credit card" that you have to get back is not the same. Simple enough to have the bar code on each ticket.
If you missed a game it would really feel like you wasted a ticket.

Both Grêmio and Inter use card as well. People simply borrow the cards from those not going, then return them later.

AFL 360 .... Port-Sydney game starts 12.33

Gee, the joy on the players' faces. The team body language. The obvious Boak love for Voss. The size of our players. Just everything, everything :)
I wish they had panned to Chad cornea, he would have been fist pumping for sure.
Appreciated Robbo's words about Boak because I agree with them.
