Not sure what game people were watching regarding Caleb Daniel. He had six touches at 100% in 15 minutes.
Not his fault but long bomb into Sydney's forward line near the end, just Daniel and a Sydney player and he obviously had no chance. Not his fault but as soon as you saw the kick you knew it was over

If JOD was available, would we try to fit him in?
Do you see JOD, Khamis and Coffield all competing for the same position? I do and that’s my ranking order.Jones and Lobb the Kpds, Bramble, Dale and Duryea the smalls and the mid out of those three I listed in my first sentence. I think JOD is agile enough to get away with it.

It's not only Daniel's decision making, his execution has completely fallen off a cliff. Crazy to say about someone who had a decent claim on being the best kick in the league at one point in time. How many kicks has he scuffed this season? He used to just be automatic. Boggles the mind.
Made the point a week or so back after watching our finals run in 2016 , he has lost all zip.
His evasive skill and delivery out of traffic was a real weapon.
It’s all gone 😢

Sadly he adds zero to our best 23 now.

Baker isn't just a natural left footer, he has no right foot to speak of. I saw multiple times in the VFL this year where he tried to draw his opponent in by faking he was going to use his right and it never worked.
I’m pretty sure Baker is right footed?

I reckon that part of the ground that VDM patrols has been neglected by us for a long time. We've been very left flank focused in recent years which made our attack a little predictable. VDM has had an influence in widening the ground and providing an option to go I50 from the right flank. And given that Marra and Naughts are both left footers, it's not a bad side or pocket to be taking a shot from. Marra and VDM seem to connect the most often.

Treloar is still the only dominant right foot amongst the regular mids, though pleasingly, Bont, Libba and Richards can all use their right pretty well. Macrae left. Garcia right and Sanders right but not particularly penetrating.

Baker and Poulter are both left I think, well Baker definitely. There are just not a lot of candidates for VDM's role. And he's gone alright IMO.

Bevo said in his presser that Coffield will be ok. Just subbed him as a precaution
Coffield has been solid and has enough pace to go with mid sized to small forwards. And is a pretty good user of the footy. Possibly subbed to take some load off for next week to man Fritsch as he is a bit more spatially aware than Khamis.

Playing that forward role, yes. JJ can’t play forward.

Fair enough. He’s nowhere near as good forward as back, but I think his performances there still stack up better than VDM and I know who I would rather have the ball in the hands of in September.

youd imagine with his low number of posessions VDM comes under pressure this week, despite his defensive run

i cant believe that coaches arent telling him to take those obvious shorter options when he has the ball, rather than burning blokes and turning it over long. "Hey Vanders, your in the side for your defensive speed, when you happen to get the ball, take the easiest and nearest option, its not that hard."

Melbourne board very down & out. Some want us to win to end their season. Others want Fritsch dropped for not applying enough forward pressure. I suppose that's modern football but despite his Beavis/Butthead appearance B Fritsch is an excellent footballer, he is the separation king.

The Melbourne board is eerily quiet, they must have another forum elsewhere or they're 1990s slackers

Geez going to be a tough game on a 5 day break.

Melbourne will be desperate to keep season alive and Gawn, May Lever will make life hard for our forwards.

Big test for English though he did well against Grundy.
Thought Darcy was outstanding when relief rucking against Grundy. Really kept him honest and didn't allow the Swans to get a run on while Timmy was taking a breather. Helped maintain the pressure on the Swans as at no stage were the Swans mids getting any easy balls out of the CB

This is the game that scares me the most of our last 4. Melbourne's best is still incredibly good. It's great that they won't have Petracca but they have matched up well against us over the Bevo/Goodwin era.
Could say the same about the Cats down at their Dungheap and we came away with a statement win down there. It's time we put Melbourne to the sword and put them out of their misery.

Go Dogs - I believe 😀

He is but I think in the big matches in the current game you can only afford 1 defender who isn’t a good user and 1 forward who doesn’t apply pressure. It’s why blokes like Naughton and Darcy are so valuable up forward and why Lobb has been able to fit in down back without the return or the Keath / Gary / Bruce sideways kicks.

You’re right that Fritsch is super smart but I think he really limits who else you can play in that forward line because he has zero defensive game.

I think off a 5 day break coming back from interstate we have to make at least 2 changes. What they are, I don't know.

What I do know is that I want to beat this mob, send them packing, and be Freed From Desire.

Wish we could find a way to get Daniel into form and buzzing around half forward to hit up our forwards
Daniel just looks lost in our system now. He is good enough to play again just think it will be with a different team next year. Probably be his call and would go with our blessing. Think he definitely drops out this week who comes in could raffle it

I've watched a bit of Baker on video now and he has kicked goals on both his left and his right .... which is good.

So maybe he is a candidate along with VDM for that role. At this stage, VDM is not doing a lot wrong and it's working well.

I heard it on the God awful Olympics opening ceremony and had acutely painful flashbacks.

They're currently having a supporters forum with mulled wine and gourmet cheeses around the lodge fireplace up at Mt Hotham. However I understand most of the discussion is not footy-related but is about today's slight improvement in the stockmarket and the next Grammarian Old Boys dinner. Should be a great bash.
