Gabby Newton is the female version of Jack Watts.
Not sure how you mean.

If just in terms of "hasn't lived up to the no.1 pick tag"... the same could be said of Huntington, or even Morrison.

But if it's meant to be more specific: Watts was taken by a wooden spooner, sucked in his first year, and was hugely overshadowed by other players from the same draft. None of that really applies to Newton, who just hasn't kicked on much after making a decent start in a decent team.

At this early stage, sorry to say, the Watts comparison (including being hung out to dry by poor coaching/management) is far more fitting for Weston-Turner.

No debate she was captain for their inaugural AFLW season. She was also captain in the four years prior... no debate about that either!

Try answering the question you, and others, keep avoiding:

When does the captain's tenure begins--is it when the appointment is made, or is it when the first official game as captain is played?
I would consider it to be when the appointment is made but I guess I disagree that there’s any real continuation from the exhibition games in 2013-16 and the AFLW so I’d consider her appointment to be from when she was named as AFLW captain. No other stats like goals or games carried over into the AFLW so I don’t really see why this would.

Yes it's definitely much neater to just count official AFLW games played rather than worrying about who was appointed when.

I mean that’s also a very relevant stat but it’s a different thing from what’s being brought up regarding Katie Brennan. She is the only player that has captained a team in every AFLW season and that’s a pretty neat feat that I don’t really think is being misrepresented by the phrase “longest serving captain”.

We should maybe refer to her as a premiership captain then, if sitting on the sideline constitutes "serving".

But the AFL, and the Western Bulldogs, don't see it that way. Until they do, I'd rather consider games played as captain important (and seasons named captain irrelevant), even if it makes some linguistic experts on here upset.

It is completely fine that you see games played as a more important measure of a captains worth but you simply must understand that that is not what the word ‘longest’ means.

I'm saying number of games = longest serving
Others say number of seasons = longest serving

The English professors in here are using the word "longest" in the same way I am.

The difference is I'm not misusing the word "serving".

That’s crazy man. I don’t think you’d come across many people who’d disagree with the idea that the longest serving person in an area is the person who’s been doing it for the longest time.

Incorrect, I have been using "serving" as stated in the Oxford, Cambridge and Macquarie Dictionaries.

Cambridge Dictionary meaning of long-serving in English: having worked for the same organization, or having had the same job for a long time
And Katie Brennan has been an AFLW Captain since the first AFLW season, longer than anyone else.

I've toyed with you all long enough, but we have to move on to the Round 4 thread ahead of tonight's game.

So I'll wrap it up with this:
Selwood, the game’s longest-serving skipper...

"b-b-b-but Teddy Whitten was captain for 14 seasons..."

Awww, too bad! Can't get any more official than the AFL's own annual report. Sorry everybody, thanks for playing.

I'm deferring to the AFL on a matter regarding the AFL, and being abused for it?? Looks like I'll be crying myself to sleep tonight... AGAIN.

Btw, meant to say before, Round 4 thread is here:
