Autopsy Round 3, 2024: Essendon v St.Kilda

A pretty ordinary team effort against and ordinary team sadly. That's two out of three games where the midfield as a unit got beaten, and really only broke even against Collingwood. Our midfield don't get enough of the ball basically.
Looked pretty obvious to me that when we were dominating in the first 20 mins of the first quarter and were leading, quite a few players took their foot off the gas and let Essendon back in late in the quarter, and then we lost the momentum as a team. If Wilke is playing badly then we're in trouble.

If Wilkie is playing badly? Since played horribly in his second game back. Battle wasn't great neither. In fact alot of players were sub par.

Something tells me that whatever illness Steele had may have floated through the team because that was uncharacteristically poor all round from those players

Reckon they were drinking their own bathwater after the Collingwood win, and got caught out by a team who were more hungry for the ball. I'm sure the genius coach will sort it out.

One of their goals in the third quarter was Battle thinking he was peak Nathan Buckley and kicked the cover off the ball, missed his team mate who couldn't hang on to it and ball came straight back for a goal.

The amount of unintelligent play today was extraordinary. We handed that game to them. What is it with that club that we bend over for them, time and again? They've been dog shite for 20 years and yet we've beaten them a handful of times.

That was less about Battles kick and more about Butler’s fake attempt to mark overhead.
There should be a team rule to never kick to Butler overhead. He just does not put in any effort in to at least halving the contest. He intentionally runs under the ball to make it seem the kick was poorly positioned.

Albeit his first game back, Butlers game was putrid and the way he plays goes directly against the method in which we want to.

It was a frustrating game but below was the game in a nutshell. IMHO it all came down to shooting accuracy. If we had kicked straight in the first quarter, I think it would have been a bridge to far for the bombers to come back.

We didn't get the result we wanted but there are young players getting opportunities at the moment and that can only bode well for our depth and competiveness going forward.

Unfortunately the midfield is decimated and it's showing. Missing Henry as another option in there too along with Crouch, Dow, Clark and Wood on the outside.

It's going to be a tough month.

Open and shut case really.
Everyone looking for scapegoats but a combo of our inaccuracy and ess going 5.1 early just left the door open way too long.

If we were 12.8 at half instead of 8.12 the game is probably over.
Just one of those days.

Easy game to watch after the first half - you knew we were gonna lose it.

In retrospect, with King out and Essendon playing Goldy and Draper, playing Campbell might have been a better option.

Sick to death of 1 metre handballs to someone still under pressure.

We just looked off for most of the game.

Re Bonner - What actually counts as a turnover?

Honestly thought bonner was playing for bombers.
I was completely baffled watching him take kick in after kick in.
Every forward 50 entry seemed to come from bonner or Byrnes and was inevitably a turnover.
Subbing coops when we were kissing kind and needed a mark.
Using hastie as sub.

I don’t understand our decision making. And I hope to never see bonner out there again.

Champion Data count it as anything that losses possession to opposition in general play.

A lot of his kicks counted as effective because they were over 40m but also as turnovers because they went straight to Essendon.
So a long kick to a contest that Essendon wins is a turnover and an effective possession at the same time. Great😂

Last quarter,
Bonner long to “contest” on wing/flank.
Over and over.
Either ess mark or ess crumb.
That’s not on bonner that’s on that’s on team failure to make a contest.

And it wasn’t working,
Where was plan B?
All this focus on Bonner's 17 turnovers. He actually made 6 critical errors (Marshall team high with 14). Ok, so not Bonner's best game perhaps, but if everyone else is saying "here, you kick it", especially when Bonner himself is under pressure and there is nothing on, that might be expected.

I think effective long kicks are to no worse than a 50-50, while effective short kicks have to be to a target?

I don't think I've seen it mentioned yet so I feel I need to point this out. Bonner, Nas and Sinclair absolutely torched easy chances from 50 right in front. It always surprises me that these guys can hit a target with a bullet all over the field but can miss a 6.4m target when kicking for goal. Our set shots killed us, but this also can't be ignored.

Clangers are a much better read. Marshall had 14 from 20 disposals!!! I haven't heard one word about that.

Boner gets way too much hate for a player we picked up as a delisted free agent.
Definitely not Marshall's best performance. His credits in the bank and having to play against 2 genuine rucks gives him some leeway with supporters compared to Bonner.

5/14 were also free kicks he gave away and some of those rucks frees are just umps guessing. Both rucks are confused most of the time when the ump calls it.

Should play Campbell against teams with two decent rucks!!
No we shouldn't. Campbell offers nothing other than a tap ruckman. He's slow, can't transition on the fast plays and would be a liability at AFL level.

Wonderful 2s player and coach. Not an AFL player

Plan b was getting torched in the pocket. All 3 times either Nas or Hill were waiting there for the easy get out and clear, but Bonner ignored them.

Notice that when nas took the kick out, the ball ended up past half way, because he used the short kick to the pocket, then either got it back or the player put it past the congestion
