Autopsy Round 3, 2024: Essendon v St.Kilda

Windy is not getting off is what it is.

Phillipou had an almost game again. He gets to the ball and gets those quick hands going I just wish he would back his kicking in he is a beautiful kick.

Owens should play mid bull this week, But for some reason our coaches are absolutely set on him playing 6 different positions a week.

That's twice now this year we have played a debutant as a sub and thrown them into the furnace when they are not really up for it or going to have an impact that a known veteran would have purely experience wise. I feel we missed a trick not playing Butler as the sub him coming on with fresh legs halfway through the third or at 3/4 time I feel would of been more impactful.

Caminiti battled hard but he just isn't Max King.

Sinclair was unusually off his game - some of those kicks he missed I think he had more clangers on saturday under no pressure than he has had the last 2 years.

After calming down. That is the worst standard of footy I have seen us play since Ross came back and we still only lost by 4 points.

Do we even want to appeal with our legal council of Dennis Denuto?

Yes, for as incompetent as we might be, continually having questions on the AFL in this space only drives more people to question why they bother with the product.

If all they give a damn about is money, then hit em where it hurts and highlight how uneven, corrupt, inept and etc the admin are to hopefully reduce auskick numbers some more.

Good post.
I am going to look at some negatives however.
St Kilda FC has been around since 1873. Eleven years before my grandfather was born, in 1884.
This was before the invention of the motor vehicle and aeroplane.
It was many years before the Boer War, the Great War and Second World Wars.
The list goes on and on.

Sadly we have won one day premiership only since our inception, by one point only.

From a personal point of view I have watched the saints live on well over 500, perhaps 600 occasions. I have never once seen a premiership live as I was unable to attend in 1966.

On this Easter day I reflect on many false dawns. We have often looked promising but never seem to really deliver.

Is this current crop of players likely to be as good as Gehrig, Riewoldt, Kosi, Harvey, Milney, Max Hughton, Hamill, Goddard, Dal Santo, Clarke, Goose and the like?

How many premierships did these players enjoy, or countless other guns such as Plugger, Nicky W, Burke, Loewe etc?

None sadly...
I of course hope that a new generation of stars delivers us a much needed second flag.

Unfortunately many of us will not see this if history is to guide us.
On the positive side, none but recent history is relevant.
Probably the best admin we've ever had, a united vision and the most talented list since our last GF appearance, albeit many youngsters.
Your pain is irrelevant.

wouldn't be huge if they took his metres lost off his gained.. kicked it straight down draper's throat a number of times, 50 metres gained and 50 metres lost all in the space of 20 seconds
Yet an effective disposal each time. He's fool's gold and Port don't ditch good players. You'd think we'd have learned our lesson by now.

Genuine curiosity, what was the talk around why the club brought Bonner in?

From what I've seen of him at Port he's just a very average player...his kicking can look good in a highlight compilation but isn't consistent, not the best decision maker and isn't exactly the toughest type of player.
We have one of the youngest lists in the league so Bonner is likely a better investment than a 5th round pick or a rookie. 3 weeks into the season and l can't stand him already, but again we're smashed with injuries and suspensions so he's probably better than nothing at this point. He's definitely a depth type player, but right now he fills a hole so I'm thankful for small blessings.
I don't know why we picked him up TBH.

From what I can gather, it offers more flexibility across our HBF ball users (e.g., Sincs and Nas), noting that our mids can be one dimensional and require different options. That said, you’d think Bonner with a renewed purpose would’ve ironed out a few kinks, but just has way too many critical errors

he looks really good in praccy matches, but when the heat is on he short circuits and can't make the right decisions. Can see why you'd get confused thinking he is worth a list spot after watching him train on in the preseason, but really seasoned recruiters should know better. I hope we don't go full sunk cost fallacy with him :/

Most of our defenders are injured.
Webster would take his spot easily, but he's still better than the real nubes, McLennon and Hastie.

That's three games now where no Saint is really playing consistent good footy- maybe Steele is approaching that, but team inconsistency is a killer, and that was one of our weakest performances for a long while in handing the game over to Essendon. Close but no cigar.

You have to make the most of your opportunities. Essendon kicked 4 goals from out wide and we kicked none.
That's football unfortunately.
We are a work in progress still but I feel we are heading in the right direction.

Yeah interesting to note that our shot quality is probably better than theirs but we just missed too many

Nas, Ross and Byrnes have been pretty consistent with a 3 game sample. 2 out of 3 good games from Higgins is probably as good as we can expect.
Early days, need a couple more games to judge consistency.

Got him to add toughness to the team
and elite ball use .

Surprised you haven’t noticed this.

When Parish and Merritt got on top in the 4th we were battling from that stage.
Not having Wood who is to a huge help for our defense is a very big loss to the team , add that on to our best tall forward in King and the new boy Henry it was a big hit to our team.
Having Ross being our best mid says it all to me - we still are missing that spark in the middle.

I thought Marshall was huge having to compete against 2 good ruckman.

Anyway move on and it's early days but we can't let games like that get away from us.

We unfortunately just don't know how to break teams .... most of our games last year and this year thus far are hard fought where both teams are in with a chance to win

We just struggle to drive the dagger home ....even against the bottom sides

We could be 6 goals up early in the last quarter and I am still not confident

6 goals up with 2 mins left and first thought is often "so they win every further clearance and 20 seconds for goal?" maths equations. As you know we be bottling it and they be lifting to win the match from us.

An impatient (and justly so) fan base somewhat overreacting. I hate losing to that mob, but we barely gloved a mark or hit a target.

Bonner has played three games for the club. Bit early to put lines through people.

Considering our obvious inability to score in the last quarter, subbing off Sharman was probably an error, but was not unfair on Sharman based on output. Caminiti fine but not Max King.
