Autopsy Round 3, 2024: Essendon v St.Kilda

Our own fault, we missed too many shots and didn't take advantage of our dominance when we were up and about.

I think subbing sharman off was the wrong decision, should've played deep in the forward line and just taken Bonner off.

We really played into their hand just bombing the ball in, particularly around the CHF position where they could can then rebound a lot quicker. Needed to kick it deeper if we were just going to start bombing it in.

You can definitely tell we have 7-8 players from our best 22 missing. We looked a young side and lacked composure in the last quarter. I have a feeling we may go slightly backwards this year but if we keep seeing progression from Nas, Windy, Owens, Pou etc it will still be a successful year imo

We just didn't really want it, skill execution was so poor it was all just a battle and frankly they wanted it more and we just played for the easy ball more often than not. Then when you have a situation where you lose the 50/50's, ball pings to their side and luck isn't on your side with matters, it just ends up as hard.

Higgins did brilliantly, Owens tried, Seb arguably tried to hold the mid together, but we really lowered our colours, and to this mob. Hammer needed more presence to stamp he belongs, Sharman needed to bridge and kick truly as we know he could, but then he got dragged and subbed, but all up we just struggled, carried too many, fell at the last hurdle.

Saw that one coming a mile away once we took our foot off their throat. Onto the next - tough to win away games.

Still don’t rate bombers must add, credit to them, they’re competitive but we played shite. Sloppy game of footy with no structure largely due to several key player injuries and lack of composure. Regardless, was a game we should have walked away with. All it took was some ump calls and a clutch stringer goal and that’s the difference, even with our shite play.

Caps off a terrible week here on the BF board, a far cry from our game against the bombers last year which was absolute peak.

Disappointed but can’t win every week, whatever, I have no major concerns. We’ll be solid this season, not perfect, but solid and putting games into the youth. Whether or not we play finals is up to us.

On the one hand, any club missing seven of their best 22 will struggle. On the other hand, **** me we just threw that away. If we take our chances in the first half they don't get back into it.

Truly hate putting the boots into an individual player but 17 turnovers is actually outrageous. Especially when you only get six contested possessions and six intercepts as a defender. Need to get some blokes back from injury ASAP.

We would have won if King and Henry had been playing, but jeez some of the soft effort in the contest were appalling.

Bonner kicking to Mackay and Draper on repeat.
Marshall butchered the ball all day.
Sinclair, Hill way below par with their disposal.
Wilkie played a rare fumbly game from start to finish.

Then there's the goal kicking, and we had a couple of lucky ones with Mitch's helicopter and Butler's grubber.

Just didn't deserve the win in the end.
