Those kids (how ageist on our part!)... those young men have missed formative chunks of lower grade footy due to the pandemic. You couldn't tell by watching on Saturday night... well, during the first 3 quarters anyway. :)

2-3 games off plus the bye might be required for ND, which would be a blow to the club; he's that good. This might be what we have to do with 1st year players to avoid the fall off the cliff.

The 2nd year players (Ollie, Beau, Ginni) would be less likely to hit a wall as they have 2 preseasons under their belt.

I don't remember if Pendles and Daisy were managed during their first year at the club.
Need to remember Nick has had essentially 2 preseasons at Collingwood. He trained with us all summer in his draft year.

Did Maynard play whole game, did he tag?

5 Kicks, 9 HB, no tackles and 32 marks seems to be a very low output.

On the contrary, I reckon with 32 marks he may even keep his spot for next week.

Thanks fixed it.:embarrassedv1:
Seriously though, missed the game and couldn't see if he may have been tagging although this doesn't seem part of the new coach's plan.

Will have to wait for the pain to subside before I watch the last quarter again.

Yeah I don’t think he did any tagging and yes he played the whole game. Would have to watch again to hazard a guess as to why his possessions were low.

That plus the mini-mullet he and his brother are sporting will no doubt enhance their powers of recovery.

They can let it grow over the colder months and be like Samson.

I don't think I ever want to watch that last quarter again but I agree w' you, Bruzzy had an underwhelming game.

It's very likely the from the 2 week lay-off he earned. I trust he'll come good.

After a loss like this, I like to watch with mute on so I can see if I can pick out what went wrong, especially the opp coaching moves and if and how we responded.

I know, glutton for punishment.

Maynard’s game was a strange one.I barely noticed him at all.Hopefully he was just rusty after missing a few weeks of football.

When people are saying get games into the kids, I always think they mean play them ahead of an older player even if the older player is still slightly better - that's what I meant by Daicos not being relevant. You're picking Daicos when fit, regardless of whether you preference youth or not.

Yeah true but you have also stated previously that you think all players should come through the 2s and rushing afl games isn’t ideal or words to that effect, pretty sure we had a discussion around ND getting games early prior to the draft as well.

Im not advocating that btw more that I feel some players can step up earlier then others and not just the Uber gun draftees like Nick.

I do however think it needs to be case by case basis as the opposite effect is what happen to Watts and relevant to us to a much lesser degree Henry imo isn’t ready.

I do think in a rebuild if there is a coin toss between a fringe best 22 player and a draftee you go draftee so long as the best 18 has enough senior heads to absorb it.

"What went wrong?" - put simply......... we shat ourselves

The system works

The system Craig McRae has put in place is achieving its intended outcome - more of the ball inside 50 is creating more scoring opportunities.

Collingwood finished 18th for inside 50s last season and McRae built his system around getting the ball inside 50 more often.

The Pies are currently fifth for inside 50s after three rounds and have scored +100 points in two games, falling just short of 100 points on Saturday.

Pies winning the contested ball

Collingwood finished with +23 contested possessions and recorded a massive +37 contested possessions in the third term.

Unsurprisingly, our strongest efforts in the contest directly correlated with our nine-goal quarter.

More hard ball gets, loose ball gets and contested marks puts any team in a better position to win and Collingwood is currently in second place for total contested possessions this season (444), behind only undefeated reigning premiers Melbourne (448).

Taylor Adams (13 contested possessions), Jordan DeGoey (13) and Jamie Elliott (14) were among our best when the ball was in dispute on Saturday.

Collingwood footy at its best is pure entertainment

Our unrelenting, attacking style is a joy to watch and it's clear the players are having a ball too.

Always pushing forward with players opting to run and carry at every opportunity, every game so far has been fun for Collingwood supporters (Saturday's result notwithstanding).

McInnes a strong addition

Reef McInnes' AFL debut was hotly-anticipated after a 2021 cruelled by injury and the 19-year-old gathered 14 disposals, took five marks and assisted a Brody Mihocek goal in his first game at the top level.

At 194cm he's a big presence in the midfield and he made sure his presence was felt, finishing with two tackles, six score involvements and five inside 50s.

Elliott a standout

While a number of players were gallant in defeat, Jamie Elliott was among our best.

His stats tell most of the story: 26 disposals, 14 contested possessions, two goals, six score involvements, five tackles and three intercepts.

Gotta cool the rebuild chatter. We are a middle age team with most of our team in its prime. Good few kids getting a good run at it, but we aren't as young as you think

While that’s true, with lists of 44 players that changes quickly. We lose (say) Roughy, Cox and Howe to retirement at years end without replacing them with mid-aged trades and the age profile takes a significant dive.

With Johnson Wilson MaCRae Harrison banging down the door, Kelly turning the corner, mccreery and Kreuger clearly showing they are more than capable, and c Brown persisting with good form, there are good signs for the next season or two.

I must be far more conservative than some here but I’m not seeing the “banging down the door” element. Maybe it’s how we each define it. To me, multiple weeks of stand out performances. The key element consistency at a level. Not sure we’ve seen that from anyone at VFL level yet.

I do agree though, we are seeing some real positives across the entire squad.
