Re: Teams & Discussion. Hawthorn Vs Richmond

Stevie Gilham to Full-Forward!!! Make it happen Clarko, he'd kick a bag on Dylan Grimes and his confidence would be sky high allowing him to play on and dominate any key-forward we come up against for the rest of the season. Alternatively, STRATTON to Full-Forward!!! Gibbo to full-forward!!!!

I'm a f---ing coaching mastermind!

With all this debate on which should play Pup or Ellis, funny thing is though Pup is actually 1yr older than Ellis and he is also a lot stronger, but Ellis has 4 years afl experience over Pup.
Kind of got me thinking that with Pups age and built he is actually physically ready to play Afl, but is he mentally ready which is probably the most important thing??

Re: Teams & Discussion. Hawthorn Vs Richmond

Ellis played pretty ok towards the end of last year at HFF... hoping they put him there again.

But yeah... i'd say he'll go out next week for cyril.

If we have to have an Ellis I’d prefer that it was Warren
though he wouldn’t help the side much, he’d be brilliant with the themesong
We could throw him in up forward and use his manic dancing
To confuse opposition defenders and stop Buddy from getting a pantsing

What does Poo have to do to be in the 1s?

Who?

Ellis is a good in. Done nothing wrong and has 4 years on Paul. Paul will get his chance this year...just not yet.

You've got to wonder how much Ellis' hip had to do with some of his not-so-great (but not bad by any means) performances over the past year or so. I'm expecting a fresh and revitalized X-man out there on saturday night.

Go Hawks! (not you go_hawks!!!! :p)

Oh, and did Ellis really get 12 clearances for Box Hill two weeks ago?!?! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Re: Teams & Discussion. Hawthorn Vs Richmond

Seems likely, you'd think if there was doubt about Buddy playing we'd have Lisle or another tall replacement listed as emergency

But what if Lisle was injured too ;)

Re: Teams & Discussion. Hawthorn Vs Richmond

I was at training for a short period and didn't see anything to set the alarm bells ringing. I be fairly certain that he will play. It's not like last year when they decided not to play him against the Eagles. That was because of the flight more than anything else.

Interesting....

Awesome to see Xav back in the team. Hope he takes his chance.

Likely Sub? Savage? With Renouf to be rested after halftime again ala last week?

predictable IN which is a common theme with Clarko. Seems scared to go with something new? With versatility being the key in the modern game i don't think its that big of a deal bringing in a renowned defender and playing him forward. I'm not bagging X, i just think Pup deserves the spot more. Yes X played a good one for BH in rd1, but so did Pup and Pup backed it up the following wk.

How can pup deserve the game more? He has played ONE game with Box Hill (excluding practice matches). One game is hardly "earning" your spot in the team - Ellis has done the hard yards over the past few years and deserves a crack.

Some people are never happy. In the pre-season, people were calling for guys like Ellis, Guerra and Murphy to have to earn their spot, and for the young guys to be given a chance. In round 1 we played guys like Savage, Shiels, and Suckling, and when we lost there were calls for them to be dropped and to bring experienced heads such as Ellis and Guerra back in.

Now that we have brought Ellis in though, people are complaining again? If we were picking on name rather than form as some have suggested, then Shiels, Savage and Suckling would not have got a chance, and Guerra, Muprhy and Ellis would have been in the side from Round 1.

On another note, I am a little concerned about Buddy...

Ellis is most likely to be the sub.

This appears to be a common theme but honestly I don't see any advantage in having Ellis as a sub. Ideally our sub would be someone who can inject himself to the game for a short period of time either through sheer determination or pace.

Personally I'd stick with Lewis or Osborne as the sub, players who have the intensity to really impact a contest.

I think Savage will be the sub if tactical due to his speed, and Ellis if injury forced as he can play more positions.

go hawks:thumbsu:

Problem is, you have to name your sub 45 minutes before the game, so you don't know if it's going to be tactical or injury forced at that point.

Completely disagree with you here Rev.

Puopolo's last two BH games have in sum been better than Ellis'. Last year's and 2008 GF form count for nothing IMO. In addition, I thought Puopolo was more impressive in the pre-season games than Ellis and showed that he provided some pace that we lack.

Re Shiels, Savage and Suckling, Shiels and Savage were very impressive in the NAB rounds and certainly deserved their spots in the team in round 1.

I wasn't blown away by Suckling's pre-season, but the coaches obviously view that the accuracy and length of his kicking provides a strategic weapon in these days of flooding/presses, etc. Neither Ellis or Murphy can compete in this area and in addition, Murphy only played the first NAB game against West Coast and was injured (ankle) for the remainder of the entire pre-season. Whilst Goo can compete with Suckling's disposal and is a little harder and more composed, Suckling's additional pace and versatility seem to have pushed him up the ladder a bit, so to speak.

Just my thoughts, but I think you are under-valuing the pre-season that some of our youngsters have put together, which is great news for the team.

To all those folks dishing it out to Xavier Ellis - where were you in 2008 when he was tearing it up in the midfield for weeks on end (long before the GF)?

Short memories round here. The composure, decision making and execution are all there.

Sure injury happens, and confidence can get lost. But that ability is still there if he's fit.

he was comfortably ahead of Thomas and probably Pendles at that time. Comfortably.

With all due respect the above is completely innaccurate.

Re: Preview and Discussion Round 3 Richmond v Hawthorn

dissapointed with this, puopolo has been performing better than ellis at box hill and deserved the crack. Also would have liked to have swapped speed for speed especially against a young and fast tigers team.

Agree 100%.....I trust the selection committee but I am disappointed that like last year we seem to reward mediocrity and being stuck with a one paced line-up..

BRING ON THE PUP!

The SSS is enough young guys for now. Ellis is solid.

Best thing is the 22 know one will make way for cyril next week - nice incentive.

The sub ? Nothing to be read into who is sub. it will be shared around running/utility players

you are quite right Pess, Premiership player for Premiership player....though I firmly believe that the newbies provide the youthful exuberance we have sorely missed the last 2 yrs...SSS is great but I believe we should be SSSP :thumbsu:

My point on Puopolo is that he has played one official game in Hawthorn/Box Hill colours. As far as a replacement for a small forward/midfielder, he doesn't have the runs on the board. As someone mentioned before, if it had have been Ladson missing this week then Puopolo may have gotten a game.

As for the young blokes, I think you have mis-understood my post. I love that Shiels etc were picked for round 1 - I think they deserved it. And they have well and truly paid back the coaching staff with their performances.

My point was in regards to the fickleness of the posters on this site. Before the season people were calling for youth. Then when we picked youth, and we lost, people were calling for Ellis etc to come back in for the likes of Suckling. Now that Ellis has been picked, people are again complaining. The selection committee can't win.

IMO I think so far the selection committee have done a fantastic job. My view on that would not have changed had they picked Puopolo over Ellis. That is a 50/50 decision in my eyes.
