Autopsy Round 4, 2024: Richmond v St.Kilda

Wilson has been good but he’s had a lot of “scared of contact” moments so far. At some point he might need some midfield time in the VFL so he doesn’t spend all his time marking the ball in 20m of space while he’s developing.
Think that’s a bit harsh on a kid who has played 4 games and whose strengths are his speed and endurance - so he plays outside which is his role.

Big step up from U18s to AFL against hardened bodies. RTB also said in his presser that he was cleaned up last week yet got stuck in today. Reckon he will be our Jack McRae (my god how he is the sub for the Bulldogs is a mystery of mankind!).

For everyone bagging Norwood oval as “not AFL standard” let me ask you this - were you there today ?
I was .
When the draw came out, I was annoyed that we had been drawn to play at Norwood , rather than Adelaide Oval . But let me tell you it was one of the most enjoyable days at the footy I have had in a long time.

The playing surface was immaculate- I can’t imagine a single player or coach had a problem with the playing surface .
I didn’t mind that it was a bit on the narrow side - it made watching the play in the middle and the other side easier.
As a spectator I felt closer to the action and more involved with an AFL a game than I have in years. That game would have been nowhere near as enjoyable as a spectator had it been played at Marvel.
Sure, it only holds 10,000 people and the facilities were a reminder of the 80s and 90s but this game took me back to the game I fell in love with as a kid.
No , I wouldn’t want us to play all our home games on an oval like that , but playing 1 or 2 games a year is a beautiful reminder of the suburban roots of the game.

Honestly some of you need to get off your high horses.

Because he requested a trade. They wanted to keep him.

If you’re trying to build a case to pot a bloke then at least be on top of the details of how he came to be at our club.

I wasn’t enamoured with going after Dow but once Flanders re-signed, he was the best cheap option available with the skill set that we need. He can spray the pill when he gets it but he finds it for fun.

I didn't say he sprayed the pill. Which is potting him. I made no comment on him as a player beyond his value compared to our existing players.

I asked why Carlton would get rid of him for virtually (the very important sticking point) nothing if he was a good player.
I doubt he's as a good a player as Steele, Ross or Crouch. I doubt he has the ceiling of Mattaes. Owens, Windy.

I hope he's a star for us, obvs.

I'm not "building a case". I have doubts. Sorry about that.

Edit: For clarity, Someone said he'd be a better inside mids than most of our players. I don't know that there is the exposed form to support that.
Not the biggest statement ever made, hopefully he'll be great.

Edit: Just as a raw number comparison, which I'm aware is a pretty blunt instrument, here's a couple of comparisons between Dow and Seb:

Paddy Dow averages:
14 possesions and 2.77 clearences per game (73 games)
Seb Ross averages:
23 possesions a 3.69 clearences per game (202 games)

I actually thought both teams were swept up in the whole country footy theme and playing like country footballers for authenticity. I'm struggling to unsee some things but I will do my best to move on.

How's Max King's kicking for goal..
Sorry I have Tourette SynSyndrome...that just came out...I'll move on now
For someone with Tourette’s that’s a remarkable lack of swearing…

If Norwood can host AFL games then we should be able to play home games at Moorabbin

Ground sizes don't cause the most basic of skill errors and poor decision making. We played poorly because we stank for 3 quarters against a bottom 4 side with a large injury list.

Although I didn't get to the game today I have watched AFL played at regional grounds and I agree it is much more intimate experience, you are much closer to the action, you can hear the players and the physicality of contests.

The ground wasn't our issue today.

The shape and size look comical on TV. They need to widen it. It looks like someone turfed a running track. It's a Tic Tac.

I actually stopped watching at half time. NFI how we won, that first half was beyond putrid.

I reckon we have the potential to be decent next year. We will be middle of the road and no finals this year. Take it to bank.

Currently in horrible form. Have GWS, Dogs, and Port away. Almost guaranteed to lose all those. We are going to be 2-5, and unfortunately there are a lot of good sides. That's season over in terms of finals.

FFS just need a good run with injuries next year.
Carlton were 4-8-1 and sitting 15th after R13 last year, if we can start getting players off the injury list and not putting more on there we can have a great second half to this year

Had it been any other team we played we would have been 10 goals down at half time. It's only lucky that we were up against a team that was that light on for players as well.
They beat the fancied Swans last week and should have beaten Blooze in round one, lost a couple of players but got Dusty back hardly competition easybeats

Putrid 1st half followed up by a very good 3rd quarter and an average last quarter

Great that we were able to respond and turn it around but that 1st half was inexcusable

2 & 2 With a % over 100 ... could be better but could be worse ... big couple of weeks coming up against 3 sides in the 8
Exactly how I see it...id take it further and say that if it wasn't for the coach we'd be in Norf territory

There's barely any point looking ahead and predicting our win-loss in a month's time. It's a very, very even competition right now. I expect we'll be in most matches and just need to make the most of our luck and opportunities (which we have not done to date).

The AFL are like the Mafia, if it flows rivers of gold they have the buckets. So all that's needed is for the Vic government to find a reason to pay the AFL to play at Moorabbin...it might help if Kingston Council grow some wine grapes along the median strip along Nepean Highway in that regard.

RUOK

Remember last year the doom merchants when we just beat WCE Norf after losing to Carlton Hawks and Rich.
Came home with a rattling run over Cats Tigers Dogs from memory.

It's a long season and we showed why we are not a top 4 side nor a bottom 4 side.

We started like we finished against the Bombers and it took awhile for us to get our mojo. Much better after half time.

Kicking to Nank was just stupid but there is sfa space to do much else. Lessons will be learned and we move on. Tigers beat Swans who everyone says is a shoe in for top 4, so Tigers on that form are no easy beats.

Bring first half effort we finish bottom 8 if we bring 2nd half effort who knows. GWS will be a tough ask get within 3 goals will be a good effort. Dogs at home is our next yardstick.

We are not that good at the moment but also never forget that we found a way to win ugly and good sides do that.

Go Saints
