I've never liked this term in Aussie Rules, it should be 8 shots AT goal. On goal is a soccer term, meaning it was accurate but the goalie stopped it. He had 8 shots at goal and three of them were on target. If he is getting 8 shots on goal

Shouldn’t he be our number 1 inside mid, dishing out a handball to better kicks. Playing out of position. He is very strong in the contest
I thought I saw promising signs from Finn (13 possessions in a half and a stack of smart gut-running) in a pretty bleak team performance.
No-one can pretend he is a reliable kick of the footy at this moment but I'm convinced its more confidence than technical (time will tell).
In regards to his role, I think Sam used him perfectly in this game ... playing him largely on a wing (pretty much all 3rd quarter) with stints in the centre square (much of the last quarter). He has the attributes of both an inside and outside player as others have mentioned, so I'd hate to see him pigeon-holed as an inside bull (don't we have enough single-position players already?)
I also think, for a 7 game player, he is not just a great runner but a smart one. I watched him again during that second half, and he doesn't run aimlessly. He's a player who thinks about where he should be, with an emphasis on defensive positioning. That's a good trait for a wingman, and the makings of a coach's pet.
Anyway, I cut up Finn's game so others can also judge his key actions in his half of football (doesn't do justice to his running, of course).
