Autopsy Round 7, 2023 : Hawks go down to Dogs

Naughton really was the match winner in the end. Maybe if Lewis kicks straight, as he normally does so clearly rusty, we'd have been up more and a real chance.

I feel for Sicily, that's Cameron and now Naughton that have been best on against him this year. Even Tex beat him last week.

We desperately, desperately, need to find a key position defender so Sicily can move into that Tom Stewart role.

Hopefully Blanck or DGB put in a performance today that sees them back against Freo.

For me the biggest thing was when the pressure was turned up a notch, how easily we faded, yeah I know we are a young team, but our ability to get the ball out past half back was non existent in the second half. The long bomb down the like just doesn’t work.

CJ, and Morrison need a spell down at BH, and wingard can join them. Not good enough.
Cj yes agree but Morrison was good tonight.

Surprised by some views on this game, a lot more good than bad.

Will Day is our best player. His composure with ball in hand, his willingness to stand up in tackles is incredible.

Mitch Lewis didn't have his best day in front of goal but we know he is a good kick so that doesn't worry me. His hands though were amazing.

Mitchell i thought had a great first half, don't get the sub.

Brockman just always looks dangerous, two or three teams he at pace picked up the ball that went unnoticed by the commentators. If his name was Rioli or Bolton they would have exploded.

The midfield as a whole this year has been amazing to watch. A more experienced and finals ready team ran over the top of us and that will happen.

Lots of improvements so far this year with the midfield being a standout.

However, here is our last 3 weeks oppo key forwards.
GWS Hogan 2.4 Himmelberg 2.3
Crows Walker 4.1 Fogarty 3.1
Dogs Naughton 4.3 Lobb 2.0,

Oppo 17.11 v Hawks 1.4.(only one game obviously with a key fwd)

Season in a nutshell. Haven’t included the maulings by Swans and Cats keys.

No key fwds and no key backs.
Until we get them in place, lots of honourable losses coming up…

For years.

Ned, good try.

Harley Reid is that good and a bit…. And we will not have him because other teams a less capable.

He will go to West Coast …

just awful and certain facts!

Yeah, I’m one of those weird people that prefers my team to not finish last.

Yeah how does Will not get tackled? He does this slippery pirouette thing keeping his arms high with the ball so effortlessly. It’s like footy Swan Lake

I agree with your whole post. I am particularly buoyed by Brocky who is looking more and more like he will be a Hawthorn mainstay

Maybe it’s just me, but I just don’t really get him, as a player and his role in the team. I think he’s ok/serviceable but expendable.
The time has come already to replace Harry. We have Seamus now, too many Flankers so we need to move one of CJ, Scrim, Seamus up to the wing. Then we have added bonus of creating a spot for Morris hopefully. H

What I’m finding fascinating is our aged and experienced players are in someways our weak links . On top of that those same players we have their replacements running around at BH developing and In waiting .
Its an exciting period in our rebuild .

Yeah I wasn’t blown away by Wingerz or Bruest for example. Exception was Hardwick who was excellent yesterday.

But Sam is building a group who love playing together and backing each other up. Plenty of young leaders in the ranks. Weird season - bottom of the ladder and I’m loving watching my team anyway

Breust kicked 3 of our 9 goals. He was good

Worpel not getting enough love here. He's currently 7th in the comp for clearances and contested possession. He's a beast.
He is enjoying his footy again and his smiling a few times yesterday was very pleasing to see.
The mids (inc. Noodles) are working and developing together and it's heart-warming

We still haven’t figured out Sicily isn’t a bloody key defender? Got murdered by Naughton. He needs to play on smaller players and be an interceptor. Need to play Blanck. DGB is in same boat as Sicily. Can’t play on Gorillas (yet)

Not shy in saying I've been incredibly critical of him for his around the ground effort, but he put in a shift today and did well. More of it hopefully.
Yep, I'm a critic. He was very good yesterday, hopefully he can play two good ones in a row. Certainly needs to keep the marks and tackles up

Shout out to Brocky, his confidence in himself and belief that he belongs is really noticeable. The young man has some beautiful moves and awareness. I'm dreaming of him getting some moments running through the midfield in the future years.

Funny but VFL umpiring standards seem higher
Watched some local footy yesterday the umpiring in the reserves was a far higher standard than what was dished out yesterday. Adding a 4th ump has not changed a thing, obvious frees are still being missed. They are costing teams wins and potentially coaches their jobs but there seems to be no account ability, all we hear is how hard the game is to umpire.

calling BS on that, pay the throws, pay the HTB pay the arm chops. The game would be better for it.

I used to watch most games over the round, not anymore down to 3 to 4 games now. Umpiring standards and Interpretations are killing this great game.

Most of the good teams at the moment have a 1/2 key forward punch (think Curnow/McKay or Hawkins/Cameron)

We have played most of the season with a 0/0 punch!

No wonder we are struggling to win games.

Makes it especially worse when we are getting bugger all goals from our half forwards / small forwards as well.

Having Lewis back obviously helps but we need a second KPF urgently.
