Autopsy Round 7, 2023 : Hawks go down to Dogs

Didn’t manage to catch the 2nd half today but the first half was a really enjoyable watch.

The last 3 weeks have been as good a 3 losses as I can remember. The dogs should really be a top 4 side comfortably. Have such a deep midfield and have had top crack at the high end of the draft for a few years now when they’ve had no right to.

How good is Worps getting back to his best.

Young kids in Day and Newk threw the gauntlet down and here's our 'veteran' responding to their challenge.
It's really great to see. Worpel is having an excellent start to the year.

Been bloody good.
And that goal. Wow.

Nope. I'm not giving this game a pass mark.
I saw the first half and we were right in it.
What went wrong in the second half? I'm fine with losing by a kick or two...less so with 4 or 5 goals.
Young team that dropped its head when the umpires started turning the screws.

It is a pass as it was very similar to the cats and essendon games. It shows we've improved that despite being presented from playing our game, it took until 20mins into the last to be put away.

Give it a year, and the 30 point loss turns into a 2 goal win

One of the issues I see with Day back in the side is that we haven't got the balance yet, I feel it takes Newc out a bit too much. I get it because he can have an impact forward unlike some of our mids, but I also feel like he's the most like to get a really high impact and clean clearance. Reeves and Newc have a really good connection.

We're definitely a better side with Day, don't get me wrong, I just think we've almost got too many options in the midfield now and it's still shaking out a bit. These guys just need time together, now - that goes for the players and the coaching group.

They need to roll them through better it looks like.

We'd be fresher around the ball, and Day and Newcombe would both be able to go harder while they're in there.

It's going to happen, we've got a huge amount of talent that will start to get going over the next year or two plus whoever else comes in this year.

Maybe they want as many minutes as they can get into them right now. Or there's aspects of clearance work being learned etc.

Either way this is an exciting team, looks like not too far away there will be a heap of options in there for us.

Right now we're only coming up short because we're dropping off with fatigue. The young guys need more games before we can avoid that.

I am going to say this… and everyone hates it… Harley Ried will not be playing for Hawthorn, the youngest team in the comp = the Hawks , the team that some in the media said were tanking, have been brilliant in the last few weeks.

West Coast, one of the older teams in the comp have not been accused of tanking… and are woeful

On last night's game -
Positives
  • Mitch Lewis being back in the side helped to straighten the team up and gave us a focal point going forward - took 11 marks
  • Weddle and Rama will be both better for the run - thought they both did some good things throughout the game but need more time developing their craft at the top level
  • Amon showed that even on a narrower ground, he can find space
  • Brocky is damn exciting and his efforts are incredibly pleasing - loved his work rate
  • Punky had a quiet week on the track but kicked 3 goals and looked good
  • Daysy came back in and has that smooth moving ability that makes us look good through the midfield
  • Duke kicking 2 goals - always love a midfielder who can kick goals
  • Nash keeping the Bont to 16 was a superb effort
  • Noodle did a splendid job on English who has been number 1 ruck so far this year
  • Dimma played well keeping Weightman to very little
  • Jars' form is exceptional - love seeing him take on the game
  • won clearances
  • won contested possessions
  • 6 tackles inside forward 50

Improvements
  • goal kicking in the last minute of first 2 quarters
  • run and gun style takes it out of young bodies
  • sticking tackles as they get tired
  • forward line will only continue to improve each week with ML in there

The Eagles have 17 players on the injury list. Including senior players:
  • Cripps
  • McGovern
  • Nic Nat
  • Ryan
  • Shuey
  • Yeo
  • Sheed
Imagine if we were without Breust, Wingard, Sicily, Reeves, Newcombe, Day and Amon.

Actually really pleased, 50 games in the future this looks great.
Another KPF and KPD for a bit of depth and it will come sooner than you think.

Did I hear in Sam's presser that Hardwick will definitely be in the next premiership side? Roll on next year! ;-)

Game was between 2 bottom half of the ladder teams; on paper the Dogs, even without Liber, were a better squad, but was really happy the way the whole team took the game by the scruff of the neck to start with - and not too worried at the drop off - yet.

In no particular order, Lewis, Nash, Amon, Brockman, Bruest, Duke, Worpel : take a bow! Most of the rest did pretty well, too..

Frost had a decent day in defence - at least in the first half. The debutants looked comfortable.

There are still decision and execution errors. There looked to be a plan that needs to click with them all. No doubt between now and the next premiership, there will be player turnover, but I am not sure our ladder position reflects where we realy are... We're not too much higher, but there are worse than us.

BTW, I know this is probably sacrilege, but congrats to Bont on his 200th. I wish it wasn't a win for his team, but he is an exemplary playter of the game.

Breust replaced by? Wingard replace by? … Sic is hard to replace.. granted and not wanted
Love Breust 100%… but JOS is more vibrant. Breust is better in some ways, but jack in other ways. The hawks are trying to stop JOC being “too energetic“ as he will hurt himself. But once he has the body, watch out.

Bennnets is as smooth as mother moths milk (yes it is smooth) as you will see. 100% a replacement for Wingard.

Wingard was awesome and brilliant against the Hawks at Marvel 6 years ago.Hodge tried to put Wingard‘s head through a post…. But that did not stop him. That was one of the best small fwd games that I have ever seen.

I am not sure he has played half a game as good as that day… and has not been worth the money since .

Wingard no longer has the same value for the hawks.

Btw Jarman Impey isn’t getting enough praise on these boards. He is putting together his best season in Hawthorn colours (possibly in any colours).
Thoroughly agree, 3pages in and your the 1st one to mention him. He was fantastic yesterday and is building momentum.
Displayed leadership and played with confidence in what was his best game of the season. Awesome to watch Jars

I don’t hate it - not winning the spoon with the youngest and most inexperienced list and a second year coach is absolutely amazing. The last number one pick to win a premiership with the side who finished last to get them was close to 30 years ago. I don’t give the slightest shit about not getting Reid.

Our own avenues to goal dried up. We tired across the board, including Lewis who was a key to our early ball movement. Biggest issue was not taking our chances - we aren't in a position to do that. Scoreboard pressure is key for us. Harry and Lewis both missed shots on Q1 & Q2 sirens. Dylan Moore absolutely torched a rolled gold chance when he burnt Greene in the square, another player out wide (Breust??) and fairly went for the shot from 35m out dead in front....and managed to fluff it and not nail any of the 3 viable options. In reality we should have been further up at half time.

Once we tired in the second half, we slowed the movement down and couldn't create as many good options.

The umpires certainly hurt too (at both ends) but despite them giving the Doggies a leg up and despite us fading, the pleasing thing was that Dogs still only kicked 7 second half goals, the same as the first half. SO despite assistance, momentum and a tired team, we didn't allow them to blow us away. Once we can maintain our own ability to score in the second half and capitalise more fully on our chances, we win that game, and pretty comfortably too.

Liked Morrison tonight and lewis is a Coleman medallist if he stayed on the park. Impey great again Day great return liked Ward looked composed. Liked brockman up the ground excited to see what he can do as he builds a tank. Surprised with Seamus being subbed out thought he was good again. Overall decent performance albeit don’t understand what we were doing in the second half we didn’t take the game on at all.

We tired . Very noticeable at the ground .
We tried but just didnt have the zip in the legs to create options and our tackles started to slip.
Our forward connection suffered the most but we still got a few good looks , just didnt take them.

Pleasingly our defensive structures help up pretty well .
Previously we would have seen an avalanche of goals but we made them work hard and held them to 7 2nd half goals .

No magic fix . We need another pre season or two and games into the guys and that will see us finishing games better against the good sides

My guess is Seamus was subbed out because they wanted to bring in Scrimshaw for his experience. Subbing out Ramsden would have made more sense (based on what he and Seamus showed) but would have unbalanced the side and Sam might have felt that subbing out a debutante isn't good on principle. Not being critical of Ramsden btw, just his first game. He was clearly a bit out of his depth especially early on, but did show some good signs now and then. Ramsden will be very good for us, but not quite ready at this point - happy if I'm wrong. Thought Weddle did a few good things and should adapt fairly quickly to the higher level, at which point his more spectacular self will start to show.

Loved seeing Impey back to his best. He is so good when he's in form. Had almost forgotten how good. Amon is great to have in the team - classy player. Duke, Worpel, Nash, Day and Ward were a joy to watch, especially in the first half. To think that in recent years our midfield has been such a source of frustration and despair. And we have depth there too, so good.

It's curious about our much vaunted backline (used to think we were set to have one of the best backlines in the comp). I've been wondering in recent weeks whether it's just on paper that they look so good. Doesn't help that they have all been a bit up and down on form. Improving but not quite gelling yet - if Blanck can recover his form, perhaps the whole balance will improve. Definitely hope we keep Seamus in, for a 3 gamer he is a solid contributor - has hardly put a foot wrong and hasn't even begun to show what he can do.

As for forwards, Lewis ... what a relief to have him back. Greene wasn't as good as he has been for us but he's been our best most of the year under pretty difficult circumstances. I'd cut him some slack and allow him some time to find some synergy with Lewis. Brockman - love what he brings to the team. Very impressive player, so smart and keeps showing more.

The pressure for much of the game was good, just hope we start becoming a little more efficient and smarter with our ball use sooner rather than later.

We may well get thumped again this year but the future is bright.

For me the biggest thing was when the pressure was turned up a notch, how easily we faded, yeah I know we are a young team, but our ability to get the ball out past half back was non existent in the second half. The long bomb down the like just doesn’t work.

CJ, and Morrison need a spell down at BH, and wingard can join them. Not good enough.
