How did clark get 3 clearances from 2 centre bounce attendances ?
Because clearances are based off all stoppages around the ground e.g. boundary throw ins, around the ground ball ups.

Surprised he only went in twice as I thought he was our best mid to half time. Must have been pushing up a lot.

So ok, a very poor game, North flooded and considering we had no marking options in the forwards, it made the game a scrappy mess. Put Larky in our forward line, we win by 10.
One thing a less talented team can do is pressure. Seemed North was high on pressure all day and with the ball took all of the speed off the game.
Couple this with some rank kicking for goal and a terrible spectacle.
Some positives. Oppo team wanting to emulate this will look at Norths score. Lowest first half score ever against us, first time in four decades a goalless first half.

Try winning a game with four goals. We kick straight, even with playing in second gear and we win by ten goals.

I might be a bit morbid but I really enjoyed the game yesterday.

We have come a long way since we crapped the bed against Norf in the Good Friday debacle.

Many points I take away from this:
  • We are stopping all teams from scoring high scores
  • We now know who is in our best 22 and how we move forward
  • We are banking wins and aren't looking back
  • We are in the top 4 and looking like we belong there
  • Supporters are finally realising that winning is everything and not expecting 10 goal wins
  • Our young talent are our future
Bring on Adelaide, I'm expecting a similar slug fest

Third place, it's looking good.

I think most people want all games to be free flowing and high scoring. Sometimes you’re going to get a slog fest. Wouldn’t want it every week but it is what it is. Got the win, move onto next week.

Who do you see in our best 22?

Sharman can take a hanger like Phillipou, you could hear the roar from the Saints supporters in the crowd when they plucked those big marks.

That's what brings supporters through the gates, King will bring more supporters too, they won't turn up to see Cordy plating a selfless decoy role.
Wins just aren't enough for us.
That's what endless success does to a supporter base.

OK I looked closer at centre clearances vs centre bounce attendances for the year so far.

23.5%: Owens (4 centre clearances from 17 attendances)
16.7%: Phillipou (2 from 12)
16.4%: Sinclair (9 from 55)
15.3%: Clark (9 from 59)
14.6%: Steele (12 from 82)
13.8%: Crouch (20 from 145)
12.1%: Ross (14 from 116)
9.2%: Gresham (6 from 65)
6.3%: Bytel (1 from 16)
5.2%: Marshall (8 from 155)
0%: Cordy (0 from 17), Windhager (0 from 15), Byrnes (0 from 2)

Also Wood has 4 centre clearances and Hill 1 despite neither of them attending a centre bounce, so I guess that's when they come in from the wing.

Conclusion? NFI.

Speaking of supporters, as bad as the footy was last night, the crowd seemed tiny on the TV. A better atmosphere couldn't hurt the footy, might even pump the players up to play better footy.

Not sure what the weather was like, but when two smaller teams play each other twice for the season, surely there's a creative way to get each other's supporters through the gates. Whether it's letting each other's reserved seat holders get in for free, or giving club shop vouchers back to attendees if the crowd numbers hit 30K/40K etc. I know these things cost money, but with so much money coming in from other sources (TV rights etc), there must be some kind of temporary campaign that could boost numbers in the stadium. Maybe kids or pensioners attend free or something, I dunno. I find it hard to believe it's impossible.

They look a bit weird. Surely Steele has more than 12 for the year. Even Gresham seems to have had way more than that even playing less midfield. Sinclair seems to get a lot of clearance when attending too. Perhaps it's perception over reality but they look surprisingly low. Clark seems to have had a lot of clearances too.

I was worried about the 5 day break…it’s appears I should have been more worried about 9.
looked like we were in vacation mode for the first half.

On another note - our cheer squad, and most supporters need a bomb up their butts. We must be the quietest fans going around.
Well I was there, and the Saints supporters around us made plenty of noise!! They were groaning and laughing at our antics pretty much for the entire game!!

I am not expecting another slug fest.
We were a tall forward short when hammer was playing, since he’s been out we have really struggled to take make a marking contest in our 50.
Especially since oppo have been flooding back on us last couple of weeks.

Bring in Hammer and King, all of a sudden long bombs into 50 become a threat and the game opens up.

It's a shocking timeslot for families... they should can the Sunday twilight permanently & lock in Thursday night footy.

We were going to head in but pulled the pin after the kids' junior footy (they needed a good hose down to get the mud off them- grounds around Melb were like Moorabbin circa 1984 yesterday).

The mass of rail works around, replacement buses & the likelihood a usual 45 min trip home would take 2 hours+ made it an easy decision.

Not sure it will be a slugfest from Adelaide’s perspective - big ground & immaculate surface & they have speed & forward weapons - they will try and use both I reckon - plus they have a feral crowd who get involved when they score.

Fair enough but I have faith our defence will make a good account of themselves.

First six weeks we looked razor sharp. Running hard, making space, handballs hitting targets. Every player was performing to the max to ensure they continued to get a game.

Against Port last week and again today there just seemed to be some sloppy skills at times....missing handball targets by half a metre, lack of forward handballs, poor decision making lack of quality execution not holding marks for that half second longer so they are paid....rather than play on.

Also we were so red hot on tackles forcing holding the ball decisions...umpires seem to be giving players an eternity to get rid of the ball JHF last week and the 720 rotation no decision on our half forward line...is negating our getting the ball from stoppage and spreading....forcing us into a slower game style.

We looked better with Sharman in the side and Pou breaking forward two bounces and the best point kicked of the year....is so exciting. He reminds me of a George Young when he arrived as a forward flanker.... however Pou is more athletic.

We seemed to have an almost game today....if our small forwards do not kick at least 5 between them we will struggle to kick more than 10 goals...and that will not take you deep into September.

King back will bring the true 50/50 contest that we all need to see. From there our smalls can be front and centre and crumb rather than having to compete for the mark.

Allows Membrey to play much higher up the ground which is where he belongs. I think having tall making wingers and hhf in Pou Owens Sharman Membrey and Wood with only King deep will create some serious headaches for most sides...starting with the Crows next week.

Caminti, Webster and Bytel can have a full run in the twos.

King in for Bytel and Sharman sub.
If Gresh is sore swap with Billings.

Adelaide are up and about and lostvin a high quality game against the Cats and on their home deck. We are so so at the moment and need to find another gear like we did in the first few rounds.

Play like we did last two weeks and we lose by 3 goals in a tight scrappy affair. Also , we keep sides to 10 goals a game reckon this week must kick 12 goals to win.
