I would keep Starc out for a few weeks. With Andrews, Lester and Payne finding form together, we can afford to keep Reville or someone in, as McKenna finds more form too.

Don't want to bring Starc back too soon
It was mentioned on SEN that it looks like a significant tear for Starc (though obviously pending scan). If that makes it 2-3 weeks then you’d think we go conservative and leave him out until after the bye.
If we can get 2 wins out of the next 3, that would get us to 5-6.
We should have a full list to pick from to load up for the back half of the season (excluding the ACL boys, and assuming we don’t have anymore serious injuries in the next 3 weeks).

The 2 last night just looked like the typical innocuous ACL injury.

There are a couple of Physio's on our board IIRC, is there research out there re underlying risk factors for ACL injuries, surely there has to be or is it just down to bad luck?

I have read a few theories over the years, eg. weaker hamstrings stronger quads or vice versa, hips out of alignment.

McCluggage had the fumbles last night, even 2nd guessed himself a couple of times with ball in hand, unlike him although fatigue would of played a part during the latter part of each quarter.

The other thing I noticed while watching it again was how hard Lachie Neale ran defensively, stark contrast to an uncharacteristic slack effort during the 2nd half last week... albeit by the whole team.
You could see Clug heaving and gasping for breath a few times ,doubled over at one stage.

I think people have been too hard on his disposal , he was spent from extreme effort by the time it came to get rid of it. I know he had the fumbles but he's a class player and sooner or later he'll just come out and snaffle everything.

Injuries aside, which I think we're maybe able to cover, I'm abit more optimistic about our team today.

The way we transitioned the ball was alot better than previous weeks. Guys like Zorko & the other senior leaders are clearly working hard to rectify our recent slump in form. If we inject some more young runners into the side it could just be the recipe for success we're after, and an opportunity to rejig our game style/set-up to really compete in 2024.

I admit I am kind of wondering if Gardiner would have gone on & kicked a bag last night. As well as how many Morris might have kicked had he actually had a nutritious meal before the game. But anyway, bring on the next 3 games, all of which are highly winnable!
There are injuries that really hurt. I reckon Ashcroft going down last year caught up with us in the Grand Final. Kiddy going down has really hurt as well. The problem with Linc going down is that he is our most reliable goal kicker in a forward line that seems all over the place at times - a real box of chocolates.

Hugh had a TOG of 96%. That is truly insane for a midfielder. Only Oscar had a higher %age (which is insane in itself!) of 98%.

By comparison, the usual range for a first choice midfielder is the 80-89% range. Bont, Daicos, Kelly, Rowell, Miller, Heeney, Serong all fell into that range this week for example, as does Hugh most weeks.

Hugh spent an extra 20 minutes or so on the field compared to usual. The fact that he was still running, still linking up, after all that - he could've missed a target on every kick and I'm going to cut him plenty of slack after last night.

There's lots of suggested risk factors, but most (for elite sportsmen) are genetic and you have no control over. So yeah, a lot is just bad luck.

I don't think it's been the surface either. Have we had any opposition players injure their ACL at the Gabba recently?

Doc in round 1 did his ACL at the Gabba.

It probably is all just really really bad luck, but theres probably no harm asking the question.

If we include Will’s late last year, and Doedee injuring his in training there this year, 6 acl’s over 8 games is incredibly bad luck.

They're only there once ,half the cubs not at all .

The two last night were nothing to do with the surface as far as I could tell.

We had a theory that it was Metricon when Rayner and Hipwood did theirs.

We have had a spate of them but Doedee had form , Coleman's was just a fluke thing from a smother , so I think if we're looking for any answer or one exists it's not the surface. We played there for a whole year mostly during covid with no ACL's.

Yeah, I gave Hugh a vote. Made a number of blues, but the effort was super-human.

Does the fact that one is 'taking a specie' automatically trump everything else ... I mean you bump and you miss the head you are fine but if you don't you are in trouble ... if you try to climb on someone's back or shoulder that is fine but if you stuff it up and you knee the defenceless guy full on in the back of the head maybe a consequence or three? Seems like a pretty easy way to take out your opposition without any real risk atm...

Or is speccie on the sacred cow list?
Yeah, weird. You are allowed to knee someone in the head if you’re going for a mark. Your head is confused. It used to be a sacred cow. Now it is a sacrificial lamb.

Lohmann and Sharp put up some impressive Telstra tracker stats last night.

Lohmann was first for total distance covered (15.8 km), second for total sprints (22) and clocked the second highest speed (31.7 km/hr). 95% TOG.

Sharp was second for total distance covered (15.5 km), second for average speed (both overall and in attack and defence) and fifth for total sprints (17). 88% TOG.
I haven't crunched the numbers on last night's red time scoring but I expect us to get a percentage booster on that front (off a low base admittedly). And we also only just lost the last quarter 14-16 which was pretty meritorious all things considered.

My knee jerk reaction is "what on earth have we been doing other weeks to run out of puff so badly", but maybe Sharp's inclusion really does make that much difference? If it's the latter he can play the rest of the season as far as I'm concerned, regardless of form almost.

I mentioned this in the game day thread last night, but wait till Jacob Weitering cops a knee in the back of the head from a Toby Greene specky attempt at the MCG in the 3rd quarter of a gripping Preliminary Final, that Carlton goes on to lose because suddenly they have no match up for Jesse Hogan.

I can guarantee we will hear more from the media than the crickets we heard last night.

Went and had a read of the Suns' game day/autopsy thread ... obviously a bit frustrated and, based on a couple of mod comments, didn't appreciate some 'helpful' commentary by some of us :)

They really don't seem all that fond of our Mr Zorko down there for some reason

One poster was absolutely going off on them at quarter time. Bit embarrassing tbh. Very aggressive. Impacts of lead poisoning in the older generation are still visible every day.

Our 2 best runners were Lohman and Sharp. Both with a couple of years in the system to build the tank. This is Brain's time.
I must admit I've always felt it's a bit of an indictment on our midfield that Harris Andrews regularly covers the most ground in games for us.

And that Ryan Lester is our fastest player recorded this season! 🤯

It's a good question and a debate that will rage on. The Callum Brown hit, I see as having just as much bad luck as Anworth's. The Sydney player takes the ball, both players took a step each before they collided. I don't know how the AFL expects Brown to have time to react or predict what is going to happen. But those same standards aren't applied in a marking contest when someone is going for a specky.

I don't want guys suspended for trying to take a mark but guys are suspended for trying to contest the ball but being a split second late or tackle now.
Absolutely this. I haven't exactly slowed it down to one frame per second or anything, but I've seen a fair few angles of that Callum Brown bump and I'm still not convinced he actually bumped him at all.

It feels like there's been more made of that incident because of who was concussed. What if McCartin was the one copping the specky attempt?

Massive elephant in the room that everyone is tiptoeing around for now. But that WILL change.

(For the record, this is not just a knee jerk reaction from me in response to last night 👇)

That's just awesome.

I've been thinking for a while he's really quick now but it must be my eyes deceiving me.

Can't wait till 3KZ gets hold of this .

Maybe time for Froggy to transition to the midfield.
