I think we started to run out of gas in the last quarter.

Our comeback in the 3rd quarter seemed to take it out of us. Losing Stanley and having to play an injured Cripps didn't help either and it was a pretty warm day yesterday too. West Coast looked a bit fresher than us in the last quarter and had a bit more run which isn't surprising considering they had two extra days break.

In other circumstances I think we could have run over the top of them as our last quarters have generally been pretty good.

I was at the game yesterday and so far I would have to agree with what most people are saying at the present. Everytime the ball went into our defence I was cringing as our defence at the present is way too undersized.

As soon as Stanley went down we were always going to be in trouble. It felt like most part of the game we were chasing west coast with the ball (except the 3rd quarter). Our inside 50's at times were quite wasteful, Sydney will be an interesting test for us as in recent times we have typically struggled against swans style of play.

Put Macca and Stanley into that game for the whole time, and it would have been a completely different story. Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait until the middle of September for the rematch when we have both those two back in, along with Gwilt, Schneider, Fisher...

Using the six day turn around as an excuse is the same as blaming the umpires, it's a cop-out. That said, a Monday night game before an interstate journey is a prick of a thing. Monday nights are a rare beast few teams have to contend with, they finish late on a day usually designated for rest or recovery training and it disrupts the coming week. Others may choose to believe it's a coincidence Carlton and St Kilda played poorly after playing Monday night, I do not.

We didn't lose because we played Monday night, but it certainly didn't help.

I wouldn't blame the loss on the 6-day break or the umpires either, but I blame the 6-day break for the injury on Stanley. It is well-known and well-documented nowaday that soft tissue injuries in elite athletes occur specially in not well enough rested bodies when trying to overdo and strecth for the extra effort. It happens in team sports which focus in resiliency of the muscle (having to run continuedly in bursts of speed) too often currently (soccer, american football, basketball, etc...).

I know sometimes injuries happen and there's barely nothing you could have done. In this case, something could be done: the AFL should have never scheduled such a game in Perth on a Sunday afternoon after a Monday night game in Melbourne.

It will be a good shoot out because we will more than likely have Kennedy, LeCras, Nicosky, Embley and Priddis back as well :D

Doubt Le Cras will be back this year

Is NHL the exception? They play 3-4 games per week. Obviously 6 day break is more than enough to recover. If your still sore more than a couple of days out, then there is obviously a bigger issue.

Have you seen how many interchanges they do in an NHL game? They have 4 lines and they constantly change them. This way every one gives all they have during 1-2 minutes and then they rest for 4-6 minutes. I wouldn't say the run in bursts of speed like in soccer or footy.

So yes, NHL is an exception due to the way the interchanges work there.

In hindsight, not sure if mentioned already but this game was much like last years game except the other way around. Last year: west coast failed to get up first half, fired in second but couldn't get the win. This year: terrible first, fired in second.

Also injuries in both games against west coast?
Last year: Gwilt
This year: Stanley

Interesting.......

Inside job.

Am I the only one who thinks if both teams were at full strength we would have lost by 80? Sure the third was impressive but hardy anything to hang one's hat on. Not sure why we didn't turn up, the frustration of being a saints supporter!

No, I also think we would have lost if both sides were at full strength, but not by 80. I'd put that margin to a more respectable 30.
