King in if fit. It would be very rough to drop Sharman given he was one of our better performed, so I'd say Membrey out.

Paton looks a shell of his former self but Jimmy is the only like-for-like.

Seb was very quiet but he has credits in the bank.

Would love to see Hammer back but can't see how we shift the magnets around enough to make it happen.
Think we need Jimmy for Rankine. I worry about stockers speed against Rankine or Rachelle

Very interesting call this week with Skunk, really offered nothing on the weekend. Coops looked good, provided his usual high flying but also looked really clean below his legs. Could have easily had 3-4 last night.

If Ross is feeling ruthless King for Membrey is the most logical swap. Coops, Pou and Chito can provide alternative targets up front, seems a pretty potent mix.

HF: Phillipou, Sharman, Owens
F: Butler, King, Higgins

Given how ordinary some of the skills were I can see JB coming back in but no obvious out (unless Gresh doesn’t get up).

Are Jones and Jweb available this week? If so Sandy should be stacked this week, even with travelling emergencies.

Apparently Rachelle hasn’t been going too well of late. “Been ass for a month” was one of the comments on the Adelaide board.

8 touches, 1 tackle, no score, 27 ranking points on Saturday.

I would play Sharman next week , playing back in his home state could really unleash and could easily be rotated through forward line / wing - can't see them dropping Membery and it has to be remembered he has really only played 3 games this season and will only benifit from more games under his belt.
Steele to me is the guy that needs to lift and Ross could be winding him up for this game against the Crows , knowing he played him forward and never having any impact on the game at all.

Who we leave out this week is going to be interesting if King comes back , but if he can play he plays seniors because we need a marking / leading target and even without game time he is our best option.

Could we finally see Owens given a key role in the midfield when King is brought back in.

I guess a lot of it will depend on how Max and Hammer have and will look when playing in tandem on the track last week and this. There will probably be a fair bit of experimenting going on. To find the mix that works best.

I also wonder if we’ll start seeing how Hammer goes in the ruck? If he’s going to be in the team with Max going forward we’ll probably need him to do a fair bit of ruckwork.

Paton and Stocker are up to the task and having Sinclair and Milera gives us the speed to hopefully counter them.
Defensive team effort should get the job done - the last couple years Tex Walker plays good against us - hopefully he has a shocker.

Sharman having played in the SANFL might work in his favour in the decision about who to pick out of him and Membrey although it would really only be an advantage if he played games at Adelaide Oval and Membrey has probably played more games there than him.

Don’t understand why everyone is saying let Membrey have a crack at the 2nd best defender when Hammer played better with the 1st defender on him? Why not let Hammer play on the 2nd best defender and see if he gets off the chain?
Agree with this but I doubt they will - if Membery doesn't start impacting games the move will have to be made , he needs to start kicking goals - we have been lucky our smalls have been kicking goals.

The thing Caminiti brings that both King and Membrey dont is he attacks the ball in he air like a tall forward, but then responds at ground level like a small forward. He brings so much energy and excitement we have missed plus he and Owens work so well together they will rip teams apart in the future. I will be disappointed if we dont fit both Hammer and King into the side. It looks like Adelaide will be without one of their key defenders (Murray), so I think we can expose them down back.

Although Sharman got plenty of ball yesterday he was no where it as far as becoming a marking target forward, he is more a backup tall wingman. I think they will give Webster a game at Sandringham before returning, 6 games out after all his injuries perferated ear drum & shattered cheek bone are signifcant.

Our midfield are going that badly I think its time to start Sinclair in there and play him for the entire game through there. Rotate Clark or Ross through his hbf position. Hopefully Windhager, Billings and Jones (returning) can continue to put some pressure on those in the side.

Team:

Paton Howard Wilkie
Stocker Battle NWM
Wood Sinclair Byrnes
Higgins Caminiti Membrey
Owens King Butler

F: Marshall Steele Crouch
Int: Clark, Gresham, Ross, Hill
Sub: Phillipou

If Gresham doesnt get up, then replace with Phillipou and add Sharman as the sub.

Only concern I have with hammer and king in the same line is the chemistry. I guess only the coaches will know from training where it is at but just dont need them getting in each other's way and crashing the wrong packs. Hopefully spent some time together the last 3 weeks.

Other than that I am keen to see them together.

Sharman becoming a dual position player might be the thing that allows him to stay with caminiti. However, if push came to shove and had to pick just 1, I think Cooper gets another run. He found a lot of the ball and his use way fairly clean.

Think we're up against it for this one.

Going to be hard to curb Laird and Dawsons influence, and our defenders have a big job to do as the Crows have a good mixture of smalls and talls in Walker, Fogarty, Thilthorpe, Rankine, and Rachele. Very potent fwd line.

If this was at Marvel I'd be a little more confident, but at AO, with their current form, and our being a little flat mentally it seems the last couple of weeks, I'm half expecting a loss.

That's enough of the downer stuff though, King back in to kick 6 and Saints by 18 ;)

Playing twos but in the selection conversation for future weeks:
Gresham, Bytel, Windhager, Hammer, Webster

Under pressure:
Paton, Membrey, Sharman, Pou

Remember in 2020 (I think) when Paton was one of the more underrated lock down defenders for the small forwards? He hasn't been up to it since he broke his leg. If he could though I'd love to see him shut down Rankine.
I think his one on one defence is the same as it was then. He’s defending the smalls fine but people are holding him to a higher standard/different role. What people aren’t impressed with is when he’s used to run the ball out of defence or act as link up around the wing area. His kicking and awareness isn’t great but I don’t think it was flash in his best year either? We just knew he would do his job nullifying the most dangerous small every week.

I think simplyifing his role again to pure stopper would be good for him. It’s only his kicking and awareness (when he kicks into opposition players) that makes him a poor performer

Did he play forward? I’m not sure if that’s better or worse in retrospect. I’d hope if he’s resting forward he can at least generate a few marks inside 50 and a shot on goal

If Gresh and Marshall are both fit, I would love to see

In: King, Caminiti

Out: Membrey/Sharman, Phillipou.

Membrey has looked terrible since coming in, and in all the ways that many of us worried he would look. He has been slow, his decision making is poor, and he's not kicking goals. Sharman is unlucky to go out if he does, and it would definitely be a reputation call vs a form call. I also think that having Sharman in gives us flexiblity that Membrey doesn't provide, as you could pretty easily flip him and Wood if you wanted to change things up.

Phillipou is still playing well, but I think he could have nearly as much impact on games with a quarter as a sub as he is currently having across the full game. Rotating him, Windy, and Billings as the sub would work really well, as all three can both play multiple positions, and impact with quickly.

Replace Gresh with Windy. Not the best position for Windy to play but better than not playing. Gresham has so many almost moments that I'm no longer sure he can complete them. Maybe he's too ambitious, or is so insecure he tries too hard, or his ego is too big? Haven't got any idea but the "threat" he poses mostly remains just that - a threat.

Agree with this but would they do it is another thing - Membery is a experienced player in the forward line , which we have few - if he keeps under performing the move has to be made.

He has been underwhelming.

A lot of these guys who have a reputation have not been performing - Gresham and Membery are 2 that need to lift - Steele is one of our best players but since coming back has been very disappointing.

Yeah the problem with all these guys is that none of them is a natural fit for the ruck. I really think Max should start cross-training into it, he'd be so valuable for us if he could play 5-10 minutes a quarter in there.
