When I was making my way into the Cats clash last Saturday, I noticed a couple of patrons had a small cardboard sign with an anti-Hinkley message removed by security. I only had a quick glance “Piss off Hinkley” all that was on there.
Obviously not allowable under the Adelaide Oval code of conduct.
Conditions of Entry | Adelaide Oval Ensure banners, signs, clothing or other observable materials are free of obscene, discriminatory and/or indecent message
Out of curiosity I contacted Adelaide Oval directly this week for clarification. Not that I was planning to do anything but some of the code of conduct is somewhat open to interpretation and being barred from the ground etc.
I guess this is covered generically under The SMA reserves the right to impose penalties for incidents not covered above as required.
If someone were to bring a sign, poster or small banner that simply said “Sack Hinkley” or “Leave Ken” “Adios Koch” No vulgar language etc used, would this be permitted?
I followed up if any direction or instruction has been provided by the AFL clubs in muting dissatisfied spectators (Port Adelaide in particular)
I did not get a response however they must have figured I was a Port fan and or Member and my details were passed on directly to the club.
A club representative called me to have a chat. Not sure if they thought I was planning on leading some type of mass protest.
Perhaps they have seen some of my criticisms in recent times.
I was unfortunately half asleep at the time in bed with the flu, but it was a friendly, civil and professional chat.
No specific direction has been given to the SMA but anything containing personal abuse they will be hot on or anything that covers signage, sponsorship etc. Bed sheets hanging from the grandstand, forget it.
The club get a report from security regarding incidents each game. As with other public club messaging, they hear and see the frustration etc. I think they know deep down it is getting to near on impossible to contain a section of the current supporter base. Especially with specific stats being shared and posted on a regular basis that simply cannot be disputed.
I won’t go into all the discussion topics and it would be fair to say we agree to disagree on a couple things but I got the impression the membership department in particular is getting smashed daily with calls and correspondence.
