With a good injury run, full pre season, why cant the saints win the flag in 2012?

- hayes back
- mcevoy and stanley reading to be ruckman
- steven, armitage, smith, cripps, lynch, siposs, heyne, winmar - youth/speed ready to go

- goddard, reiwoldt, fisher, hayes, montagna, dal santo, Gram, Gwilt, Schnieder, Milne will all be still great players, what do you think they are suddenly going to be 40 years old an useless? AND not playing finals in 2011 ALL will be fresh raring to go.

- 2 good quick players drafted this year might be all we need

This group is not done yet. laughable to suggest so. The players know it and will be back. Too many guns to give up now.

Just need R.Clarke to be consistent he is a gun when 'on' he is fast and reads play very well. He's major problem is motivation and disposal under pressure which are hard to rectify i know - but my god if he did he would make fools of all of you.

We get our best 22 on the park and some luck we could well win the 2012 flag.

in the words of the great darryl kerrigan, "tell him he's dreamin'"

no chance in 2012. they had a chance to maybe steal one ahead of schedule in 2004 but couldn't finish port off in that famous prelim. and they could have again stolen one off a better team in 2010. but 2009 was their year and they stuffed it up

window has now slammed shut for this saints group. it's how they now handle the rebuilding process that will determine how quickly they might get up around the mark again

All this talk about windows shutting is a load of crap.

Teams can be up and down at various times for a variety of reasons, at the moment we are down on form and have a couple of crucial injuries but that doesn't mean we can't still turn it around in the future and be a premiership threat again.

A lot of people said our window had closed in 2007 when Lyon first took over and we missed the finals, mainly due to players struggling to adapt to a new game plan. However we turned it around in the next few years to make a prelim in 2008 and GFs in 2009/10. The same thing can happen this time.

Sounds dangerously similar to the confidence West Coast supporters had prior to 2008: "Our new breed in Selwood, Priddis and Mitch Morton will lead us to the flag!".

Always loved your optimism and blind faith Plug. Way to support a team:thumbsu:

The thing that worries me big Plug is that at the end of 07, people thought our window had closed becuase of the ageing and exodus of some pretty solid players. Over that time frame we lost stars such as Fraser Gehrig, Aaron Hamill, Robert Harvey, Andrew Thompson, Brett Voss, Justin Peckett, Stephen Powell and Luke Penny to name a few.

But these were not the guys who were going to give us our real tilt at the flag. It was the young players coming into their peak. Brendon Goddard, Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke, Sam Fisher, Lenny Hayes, Leigh Montagna, Nick Dal Santo etc. That was the future, that was what was gonna keep our window open to this day.

Now they are moving on in age and time and I don't see that next superstar group of youngsters that we possesed back in 04, 05, 06 coming in and carrying us to a flag in the next couple years. I have great faith and excitment in our youth and devolpement coming through the ranks now and think that in time these boys will be the champion players of the club. But unfortunatly that isn't going to be 2012 or 2013.

As for this year? Well its been six rounds and I'm sure there is still fire in the belly of the boys and I'm not to fussed with all the BF experts writing us off. The stars are going to find form at some stage and they still have plenty to give, don't you worry. Hopefully starting this week against the Blues.

Well Goddard, Riewoldt, Hayes, Montagna, Dal Santo and Fisher should all still have at least a few good years left. Koschitzke I'm not so sure about unless he becomes a ruckman, his days as a key forward look numbered.

If we can get some of our talented youngsters enough games in the next year or so they should start having an impact next year and beyond which hopefully will allow us to extend our window for another few years.

Lyon already looks like he is doing that by giving the likes of Armitage, Steven, Smith, Stanley, Archer, Johnson and Cripps opportunities already this year. I'd expect Winmar, Ledger and Lynch and maybe a couple of other youngsters will get games before the end of the year too.

I agree there is plenty of life left in those stars, thats why I don't care if people want to write off the Saints this early in the year. Sure, we have a pretty horid run of matches coming up in the next few rounds but we have had a pretty good record against other top sides the last few years. Besides the past Grand Finals, the club has generally stood up well in big games. It's the cellar dwellers that worry me more.

I definatly think that the young kids that the team is introducing have the goods in them to one day lead a premiership assault as the stars of the club. But over the next couple years, whilst most are in the 0-50 game range I reckon it's a big ask. But I hope I'm wrong. I hope they gel perfectly with the senior players and it's a chance with the amount of quality the club pocesses at the top end. It may be enough. 2011 is still open for the Saints.

As I said, I still am confident and excited by our youth and development, however long it may take. Seeing David Armitage blossom with the responsibility and game time, Jamie Cripps kick 2 goals on debut, big Ben McEvoy holding his own in the ruck, Tom Ledger look game ready from day one and a 19 year old Dan Archer crashing packs makes for an exciting future in my eyes.

***! I forgot about Ledger!! GGGGGGGGGGGUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNN the pace ledger, winmar, steven, smith and stanley will add in 2012 might get us ovewr the line! :thumbsu:

Good years wont cut it.

Those blokes all had AA dominant years recently and it wasn't good enough.

After a serious hamstring injury do saints fans realistically think Roo will get back to a 200+ and 70 goal per year CHF like he was in 2008-09????

After a serious knee injury and being 32, do saints fans realistically think Hayes will even play another few years? Let alone a few years of football at the level he did in GF1.

Fisher will be 29 this year.....why will he be getting better??

Dal Santo, Montagna are both 27, fair enough to expect a few years of peak football....

Goddard (about to turn 26) is the only bloke who is at the beginning of what most deem the peak years.

And laughable if you think your kids coming through now will be anywhere near as good as Roo, Dal, Ball, Maguire, Monty, Goddard, Kosi etc

Harvey did.

Re: Saints Are Finished in 2010 & Beyond

Saints need to cull and rebuild. Cut the dead branches to promote growth.

Retire
Baker
Blake
Gardiner

Trade/delist
Mcqualter
Eddy
Dawson
Dempster
Peake
Polo
Kozi
Gilbert
Heyne
Clarke

On notice
Gram
Jones
Gamble
Lynch

serious amount of deadwood there. really doubt any of them would get into our best 22.

How would you know when you probably haven't even seen them play? Armitage, McEvoy, Steven, Stanley, Smith and Cripps have shown a bit already at AFL level and Winmar, Ledger, Siposs, Lynch and Archer all have potential as well.

Maybe they won't be as good as some of those other players but too early to write them off just yet.

lol

Wow....a bloke has 1 good game.

Was Banger playing at his 98 level in 2005 was he??

R.Harvey pre knee reco was good for 25+ disposals per game, and was the heartbeat of the side.

R.Harvey post knee reco was a solid player, who still could turn it on, but most weeks was just a contributor.

As I said, any saints fan that expects the same output from Lenny is deluding themselves.

Who was writing them off??

Pretty fair assumption that they wont be as good as Riewoldt, Goddard, Hayes etc....those blokes will all go down as St.Kilda legends
