Latter part of the last quarter some better signs

Billings continued to work hard in the middle and won a lot of footy. Probably Sandys best with Cockie and TDL and maybe Acres

Hickey kicked another goal

McCartin got a couple of kicks and took one or two marks

Acres was impressive at times.. As was McKenzie

Holmes did some nice things

On the negative side
Fwds McCartin and White were well beaten... And ordinary
The ruckmen resting fwd allowed Port to continually waltz the ball out of defence.
Had too many ruckman!!!
Hickey had little influence around the ground or in the ruck against an inferior opponent.
Goddard struggled
Lee was horrible, his opponent out pointed him easily... He was alright when we had the footy but can't defend
Kicking horrendous

There were a large contingent missing
Cooke, Jones, Ong, Shakallis, Weikardt along with Simpkin, Minchington, Curren

Surely that makes strike 3 for Lee in defence. Put him fwd and give him a chance to remember why he was drafted, twice.

Wouldn't want to be White right now. He could yet find himself in defence next week if we are trying to flip someone back. Especially seeing as he cant get a kick fwd.

Yep, get Lee forward for the love of God! He must be frustrated, in and out of the seniors, riddled with injuries, patchy form and thrown from forward to back in the VFL. The bloke is playing for his future, give him a good run forward so we can see if he's good enough.

How many possessions did Billings end up with? Good to hear he spent a lot of time in the middle, hopefully we can see him next week. McCartin is obviously still a while off by the sounds it, which isn't that surprising for a 1st year big man. Disappointed to hear White was ordinary though.

I went down. Here's some thoughts:

Tom Lee - Played in defence. Very good 1st Q, but was beaten by his direct opponents in the air thereafter. Was generally quite good with ball in hand but struggled 1 on 1. The problem with Lee in defence is that he does not possess the closing speed on shorter faster opponents and lacks the strength to handle the big key forwards. 3rd forward looks his best bet.

Daniel McKenzie - Skinny, not overly tall but throws himself into the contest. Tackled well, and managed to get a number of quality handballs in close. Played mainly in defence. Ran out of steam as the game progressed but that is to be excused considering his youth and inexperience.

Spencer White - Played forward, had no impact. Just could not get into the contest at all.

Patrick McCartin - See above. One thing I will say about Paddy is that he never gave up. Roughed up a little by Port but did not go into his shell. Kept trying, kept presenting took a couple of marks in the 2nd half, but had little impact.

Josh Saunders - Busy, busy, busy, go, go, go. Never stops trying, never stops running. Disposal was better than the last time I saw him but still needs to clean up his kicking. Won heaps of the ball in close, hands were generally quite good. Not the tidiest looking footballer, but he's a real old fashioned scrapper. Might be worth giving him a go as a tagger. Played on ball/wing.

Lewis Pierce - Started off ok, was quiet after that. Not suited to the amount of ruckman they played. Was on and off the ground playing second fiddle to Hickey. Played a little in the forward line in the 3rd q but the ball hardly got down there.

Tom Hickey - Played well. Won a lot of hitouts not always directing them to his teammates but was influential especially early. Did not win a heap of the ball but took some really strong marks around the ground and in the forward line. Kicked 2 or 3 goals. Clearly the best ruckman on our list.

Blake Acres - Smooth, stylish player who got better and better as the game went on. Disposal was good, just has to eliminate the odd careless error. Not overly quick, and can sometimes look laconic but has class. Played on-ball/wing.

Hugh Goddard -A real determined competitor. Strong opening half, quiet thereafter. Does the basics well. Spoils, shepards, tackles etc. Not totally convinced he is that good below he's knees, but I will reserve judgement for now.

Brenton Payne - No influence. Looks more like a lead up forward, than a key-position forward. Very skinny.

Jack Billings - Quiet early, improved a lot thereafter. Creative game playing on-ball. Will play seniors next week.

Jason Holmes - Prefer others.

Baker-Thomas - See above.

I find it hard to believe Paddy had 10 possessions

I got there half way through the first... And from there until half way through the last he never touched the ball.
Hickey also did not touch the ball in the second or third
White had one touch in that period and Holmes/Pierce had 2 each.
That's 5 possessions from 5 players not counting Payne... Which is why port kicked 15 goals to 2 in that period.
If Hickey is our best Ruckman, he did not do enough around the ground for that level in a tame praccie game
Honestly except for The last 15 m we were hideous.

TDL was easily the most damgerous fwd.
Billings was very good and got better as the game wore on.

Paddy was very underwhelming... Not a very big fella... Not athletic... Does have good body language though, and gives effort. White is the opposite.

TDL dangerous? You avin' a giggle?

Hmmm I would say he is suited to that level. If the most dangerous player on the ground was TDL then we have a problem with our list.

But he always was a dangerous player in his VFL games. Way more than Minchington for example. Thats not to say Minch won't be more dangerous at AFL level.

Via TrueZebras, Billings had 32, DMac 22, Acres 20 & 2 goals
Very very happy to see those numbers, especially DMac, who is not renowned for big disposal numbers (not that 22 is big, but it's better than say 14, especially as he probably ran out of gas, after missing a lot of training and so-on).

Unless a ruckman can mark the ball they are useless Marto. You cant have three thats for sure.

Thanks for a great review Blurt. Much appreciated.

Re Tommy Lee - that seems his problem playing as a fwd as well. Not strong enough to play KP and not agile enough to play a flank.
He needed to hit the gym and add 10kg and improve his all-round strength by 20% but he hasn't done that so I think his AFL dream is over.

i'm fearing the worst ala lee and white. starting to worry some of our trades/drafting wont be as good as we make them out to be

Lee concerns me. Not big or strong enough for a key position, too slow for a flanker. Has decent skills, but for a guy who is turning 25 he would want to show something this year. I've seen him a few times now in the VFL and he just does not do enough.

I would not give up on White just yet. One thing I have noticed about him is, i don't think he is a very assertive or confident guy. I have never heard him talk in the huddles and he seems to be uncomfortable when given praise. In fairness to him today, Sandringham's line up was absurdly top heavy. Holmes, Pierce and Hickey rotated though the ruck and the forward line along with McCartin, Payne, and White! Guys were on and off the ground and getting in each other's way and as soon as the ball hit the ground Port whisked it away.
