I was at the game, but I didn't have a team sheet, so I can't tell you how our boys went, but overall the side wasn't horrible, a bit rusty but still a pretty fair performance on a pretty warm day against similar quality opposition. I did see Holmes looking better than ever, and we had an early injury, but unsure who to. A few players were reported, one after a rather nasty left hook to the jaw of a Bloos player who struck him first!

On the venue, Ikkkkkkkon Park (as it is known now) is in various states of disrepair and should probably be revamped into a public space a la Victoria Park. There is little chance of AFL ever being played there again without a major redevelopment.

I went yesterday. Missed the first 15 mins. Here's what I thought:

Tom Lee - Played forward and in the ruck. In fairness not suited to playing in the ruck, but did not have much of an influence playing forward. Tried hard, and was vocal and supportive but needs to have a greater physical presence before I am convinced he can make it. Looks more suited to a 3rd forward role.

Spencer White - Decent game. Played up the ground quite a bit, inconsistent defensive efforts but still looks to have improved that part of his game. Took a strong pack mark and had a exiting run down the wing in the last. Disposal was good as well. Took first options more, not trying to do too much as in previous years. Let down a bit by poor kicking from teammates having made good position on a few occasions. Still a way to go but looked the most likely out of the Saints players.

Jason Holmes - Tap work is terrific, needs to do more around the ground. For a guy who only started playing a year ago, he is doing well, but people have to be kidding themselves if they think he is the answer in the ruck. Needs more time. Still convinced they draw the best players out of a hat.

Brenton Payne - Him and McKenzie were a little hard to judge as i did not have a record in the 1st half. Kicked 2 lovely long goals in the 2nd half. One from a lead up mark, another from a well timed interception. Loping sort of running style, skinny but seems to read the play ok. Nice, straight kick based on yesterday's evidence.

Hugh Goddard - Played in defence on Casboult. Looks to be a really dogged desperate player. Lots of 1%. Kicking was ok. First time i have seen him, need to see more but did quite well considering he is a first year player.

Josh Saunders - Has some fine qualities, speedy, tenacious, can find the footy but his kicking is a concern. Had a lot of the ball, but at times wasteful. Played mostly onball and the wing.

Daniel McKenzie - He's alive!!! Did not know who he was in 1st half because i did not have a record. Played in defence in the 2nd half. Looks to have a nice kick on him. Need to see more. Hard to judge. Sorry.

Tom Simpkon - OK game. About what you would expect from Tom. A few fights, lots of bone crunching tackles. Played in defence lining up on talls and smalls.

Good to see Payne getting a couple of goals, i don't have very high expectations from him this year so good to see him get amongst it early, i hope he can keep it up!

thank you for this report

Tom Simpkin copped an elbow to the jaw and was as angry as I've ever seen him at a game when he had to come off due to that. Not sure how much damage, if any, but it didn't look good after the game. Hopefully it's not broken and he'll be ok to play in the next couple of weeks.

Adam Cockie got 2 weeks suspension and Myke Cook one week

Id be damn careful not to clock Simpkin as he is just the player to focus on smashing you the **** down after that in any way possible.

How am I not surprised on Cockie though. Really not a good look from the captain.

What did Cockie do?

I don't understand people who get cited in a preseason game. You really have to have better restraint and control of yourself as a professional athlete.
If it's the incident I'm thinking of, he responded to the biff by whacking a Bloos player with a right hook across the jaw. Looked pretty ugly, but no king hit by any means.
