So in summary:

- Cancelled submarine project with France, that was only signed on in 2015, by the current ruling party
- Already spent over $4b and no idea of the additional costs for cancelling, but will clearly be billions more
- In principle agreement with the US and UK for nuclear propulsion technology for submarines. No contracts, no designs, no price tag other than the knowledge that it will cost significantly more
- No submarines due until 2040, and given defence build history more likely longer aaaand delays mean more dollars
- Collins class submarines forced to stay in service an extra 15-20 years longer than expected, which is more money down the drain
- No confirmation of what happens to jobs while we wait on designs, but people will undoubtedly hurt in the short term
- Severely damage our trade relationship with France
- Further anger China, who will take it out on Australian exports, billions more down the drain
- Piss off our closest neighbour New Zealand, who will not allow our hypothetical new submarines in their maritime zones and boundaries

What an absolute clusterfu** this is, but he'll win chuds over, wedge Labor and distract from a bunch of ongoing scandals for a while.

didn’t our coalition overloads proclaim the ‘wonderful’ trade dealwith China (abbott I think) Now they go out of their way to annoy the chinese

Opposing the Chinese trade deal was racist, we were told at the time.

You missed the other mob. Are you ignoring that OR simply not offended.

Former NSW Labor minister Milton Orkopoulos r*ped 11yo boy four times, court documents allege

OR

or perhaps noting that there was accountability?

or are you stating that Orkopolous’ behaviour should have attracted less consequence?

geez you lot are confused on ideas of basic logic and critical thought.

Why would anyone care about "pissing off" that isolated hovel NZ?

Work in our interests only, bigger countries do not worry about "pissing off" Australia.

A typical middleweight regional bully, Australia has a paucity of genuine influence Not based on coercion.

of all countries in the pacific region, north or south, Australia would be one of the least trusted or admired.

NZ’s is almost the mirror image of Oz.

Australia could become the target of a nuclear strike by China following the security agreement with the US and UK which will lead to it acquiring a nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

Speaking to China’s state-run Global Times newspaper, the unnamed official said nations such as China and Russia would not treat Canberra as “an innocent non-nuclear power” but as “a US ally which could be armed with nuclear weapons [at] any time”, adding that Australian PM Scott Morrison was putting his nation in danger.

Meh. Sabre-rattling.

we were already a nuke target

pine gap and our WA naval bases (because they regularly host USN vessels) have been first strike targets for decades

You forgot to add, having f’ed up a conventional submarine project, they have now started a project in which we have zero experience, so the possibility of the whole project falling over and delivering zero subs is huge.

We have gone from safe and highly capable, and cheap Japanese subs, to riskier, marginally (at most) better, and very expensive French subs, to entirely hypothetical, extremely speculative and enormously expensive nuclear subs.

And less of them.

Just get 20 Japanese subs and be done for fu** sakes.

The yank subs are a proven design out for over 20 years.

Most of our defense procurement stuff ups are from reinventing the wheel, trying to customise too much or unproven designs.

instead of bottles of Australian wine rattling on Chinese tables
Compared to the rattling of chains around the wrists of Uighurs and death row inmates being prepped for organ harvesting.

khaki electioneering.
I'd have thought that if a pair of ****s getting wed was such an important issue that it needed to be put to the public first, we might have been asked about such a fundamental shift in policy like this too.

only one of theses matters is contentious public policy, the other recognises basic equity.

our system is so corroded, and yet we have ****wombles that cheer the fracturing of the post war consensus without an appreciation that this fragile representative democracy is not the natural state of man.

to think that a regressive slide is not possible is eschatological w***erism

the rampant consequence free rorting and waste, like this latest announceable, is a small but inexorable part.

Nuclear bombs are proven design. Should we get them?

That sounds like a democracy. How many churches run as a democracy?
