Should we take a stand against soccer?

The majority of the nation want the WC. The Rudd gov whom I did not vote for by the way has endorsed this bid representing the people that voted for them.

I doubt that will be the case.

Perhaps a majority of sports fans want it in principle, but not many at any cost. As the demands go up the support will diminish.
Then there is a large section of the population that don't follow sport and think it should fund itself. They make no distinction between AFL or NRL or FAA.

All these people get to vote. I can't see the FFA getting any sort of coherrent national support behind the bid once people start to slowly understand what's involved. This issue hasn't hit the mainstream yet, it is only in the sports pages.

That's true - it's not mainstream yet - and the FFA and Government prefer it that way - the truth is far too awkward.

There is no concern about losing dominance.

There is a concern about Government subsidising a foreign entity to the tune of billions of dollars to compete directly against the local business, perhaps even utilising the assets of the local business.
You use that line over and over. Where is your evidence?
One scrap of it? Even The Herald Sun would be a good reference to begin with

Hmmm, where you against the Sydney Olympics or the Commonwealth games?
They spent a lot there.

What evidence - subsidising a foreign entity?

Well, what do you reckon it's all about?

We cover the full cost of absolutely everything to the tune of billions upon billions of dollars.

FIFA comes in and takes over the running of the investments to line their own pockets, all running against the local competition (AFL and NRL).

Do you reckon that's normal practice in the market place?

They spent a lot there.

They were funded mostly by the state governments.

I was in favour of the Sydney Olympics of course, at the time. But I've since grown wise to these claims of big events being an economic bonanza. My guess these days is simply the bigger the event the bigger the loss.

Doesn't it say anything to you that counties with economies similar size to our own like The Netherlands and Spain are going for joint bids with other countries? Bear in mind that these nations have advantages over us in being strong soccer nations, have the stadiums, are in the middle of Europe, and have the right seasons to match. Yet they can't afford to make the bid alone.

See that's a privilege, not a burden - it's an investment in our own infrastructure, and an investment that pays off immediately with FIFA bringing the world's biggest event to our shores.

Temporarily running against the competition, but in the long term providing them with improved facilities (especially the NRL). Not to mention the huge benefits received by the FFA, who are also a local organization - and an organization the government should support.

Well that's an interesting view point - I doubt the courts would agree.

Why should the Government support the FFA?

Dont try and fool us with your commercial language, you are not in business, because you would not make those illinformed statements and regurgertate them as some sort of fact.
Exactly how many billions will it cost the Australian Tax payer?
What negative economic impact will the WC have on Australia.
How much will FIFA actaully make? The Wc is not a gypsie circus that takes your money and packs up and leaves before the show has started.
F%ck why do you and others care about Rugby League all of a sudden. Go to bay 13 and you will find a collective troll of league.

How do you know that the AFL will not be compensated? You think Andy D is such a dill to allow AFL to get shafted?

By the way which languages do you speak, as you mentioned in an earlier post you speak 4

could their motives be that by going into a partnership, they are reducing the competition and increasing their chances of success.

Tell me, where did you spend uncle Rudds stimulous money on?

I don't think so, I think they are just being fiscal conservatives.

I spent my stimulus cash on some locally made furniture. I thought long and hard about how to spend it on the local economy instead of imported electrical goods.

Really, name one?

Cricket and rubgy union are two.

The point is - soccer is a massive sport worldwide - it should need zero assitance from Government.

In fact, that's always the great paradox about these big sporting events that supposedly make squillions.

The taxpayers always have to fund them - ain't no one else putting their hand up to invest - but plenty wanting to take the taxpayers' money!

Rugby and Cricket receive their fair share of handouts. Government is funding the upgrades to Adelaide Oval and the SCG, spent a lot of money on the 2003 rugby world cup.

Soccer doesn't need assistance, FIFA could make just as much money by playing the World Cup in an already established football country with current stadiums, but they want to grow the game, and governments are willing to spend lots of money so that FIFA will grow the game in their region.

We've already established many times over that Aussie Rules doesn't receive it's fair share of handouts and just because other sports have received handouts in the past doesn't justify billions of dollars handouts .

Great , so let soccer fund this tournament if it such a winner .

Ah , that's right they just take the profits .

The greatest game in the world is creeping upon you, suffocating you, and breathing down your neck like a nightmare.

To the media and any people that bash and undermine football a word from the good book.

"If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents, father and mother, shall thrust him through." (Zechariah 13:3)

maybe you should think about david and goliath

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's sports stadium, nor his training facilities, nor his grassroot support, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.
