Interesting.

Port look to have added some speed to their midfied, and if Treadrea came back and was in form they could rise up the ladder quickly. Cornes at CHb, Tredrea at CHF and the Burgoynes in the guts is a pretty good start.

The Cats could easily rise into the top 4. Plenty of improvement to come from their core group and if Ablett can replicate his late VFL form, and Hawkins provides any type of presence they will have enough scoring options. They are very even over the ground, but speed in midfield is still the biggest flaw. May see Gary jnr spending more time in their which would make a difference.

The Roos finished 5th in 2005 and then had a year this year where pretty much every player played well below previously displayed form. If they can pick up a CHF in the draft to even half cover the gaping hole at CHF then they ould be a chance as they are otherwise pretty even across the ground. A new reliance on young guys in the midfield may see an inconisistency that would see them get that high..

Can't see any of the other teams doing it.

Touche!

Just to prove I am small minded, petty and insecure.. I posted the exact same observation on this board over two years before Dan did, and copped a bagging for it.

Quite a lot of people said it was rubbish and would definitely not happen that year- it was true then and it's true now. The same will happen again next year, just one of those weird things in football,
Nice work.:thumbsu:

We have a weeeeeener!

The other weird theory is that the make up of the 8 in round 7 is at max only one or two teams out from the round 22 ladder.

You got this Saturday's lotto numbers?

how many of the surprise packets had dream injury runs? pretty much all of them I'd have thought.

that's still the biggest factor in the era of tightly enforced list numbers. not glamourous or sexy, but hey...

Going through the whole year without arguably your best player, who happens to be your full-forward. Also a guy who is considered by others as your best player missing the bulk of the season. Adding to that injuries crippling your midfield depth. It's a dream run alright.

The funniest thing about this thread is the way that Hawks like cschreuder61 and GALON threw massive hissy fits when it was suggested Norh were a chance for top 4 and were better than Richmond, Essendon and Hawthorn.
They just cannot bear the thought of it.

GALON in particular...what a knob.
I am sure he reads over this thread dasily (he logs off first so no-one will ever find out) but he will never put another reply in it. Rightfully so.

And a big shout out to our old friend Nip/Tuck who always thinks he is doing his credibility wonders but bagging out his own team. Get together with GALON, pool your money and I will give a crash course 101 in rating a list and understanding footy.

$1,000 2 for 1 Zebra limited offer. We will have you back on track to compete with the big boys on this board in no time.

Dan26's theory holds watertight again.

From bottom 8 to top 4

Geelong 10th to 1st
Port 12th to 2nd
Kangaroos 14th to 4th

and from this thread that he said someone from top 8 will go to bottom 4
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304802

Bulldogs 8th (6th after finals) to 13th
Melbourne 7th (5th after finals) to either 14th or 15th depending on Tankmania result.

This year's missed finalists are:

St.Kilda
Brisbane
Fremantle
Essendon
Bulldogs
Melbourne
Carlton
Richmond

At least one of those teams will continue the trend. After this year, and looking at the history of the past 14 years I wouldn't put it beyond any of them. The "temptation" is to select Freo, St.Kilda and the Doggies but I don't think it's as simple as that. Often teams on the rise have a mix of youth and experience and a bit of an x-factor (Port this year seem to have a perfect mix of youth and experience.)

Brisbane and Essendon would be good bets, I reckon as both still have good experienced players, and some youth, and have key positions covered, and both we middle of the road this year, which is a good launching groudn for top-4.

Melbourne could do anything.

Freo could be the Geelong of '08.

Can't believe Zebra predicted it exactly. Be interested to see who he thinks will make it out of those teams next year.

Next year, let's see.... geelong Eagles to stay, roos and port - jury's out, might wait for next year to decide on this fully, but atm, I would say the most likely team to make top four is brisbane.... st.kilda can if they get their act together but i don't think we will.... melbourne injuries permitting.... bulldogs maybe.

No one else will make it.

Can't speak for the other "surprise packets" but Thompson and Hay out for the season, and Gibson and Wells out for large parts of the season were not scenarios I was dreaming about in February.

Surely you cant count Hay? Should the Eagles be declaring the huge impact Josh Wooden's injuries have had on their year?

I'm willing to put my tipping credibility where my mouth is, and say that the Lions are the only team that didn't make the top 8 this year, with a chance of making the top 4 in 2008. That's not to say i think they will, but i think they're a great chance.

that's your excuse for a response?

Well yours was a pretty silly statement. North had a pretty horrible start to the year injury wise.

The Cats have been without Chapman, Scarlett, Rooke all year, Ottens, King, the list goes on. We have had only 6 players play every game, and that will be at least down to 5 after this week.

Trying to play down the efforts of the sides that finished ahead of you by claiming a 'dream run' injury wise is a little bit pathetic.

I'm surprised by the sheer quality of the Geelong list. They definitely have the men to make the finals and I think the club has done the right thing by avoiding a bloodletting after a shocking year.

I'd hate to profit from other's misfortune but after the Cats poor season a little bit of me was thinking "freebie midifelders!". Costa held his nerve. Maybe Thompson should have gone, maybe there should've been a clean out but I reckon their caution will be repaid.

Predicted on Feb 8 2007 by Mr Cyclops there :D

Who do people think will be the top 4 surprises next season?
