Autopsy Snow bunnies beat the Hawks

Game plan needs to change, it's done now without the class of peak Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Birchall etc.

Hopefully all those posters that claimed Lynch, Shiel, etc are signing for us turn out to be right, as we need to land a few more A graders to compete next season.

I agree completely. Both finals were good. His missed handball was bad luck but why was there three demons surrounding him and no help from teammates. Sicily just watched on.

Sicily won a 50/50 to get the footy in the first place, then handballed to Shiels, who then proceeded to handball it a foot behind Sicily as he was running past.

How is that just watching on?

What? No Way! Normally agree with your posting but definately not this time.

1 or 2 moments aside, Mirra was very good tonight. Composed under pressure in the backline. Had 14 kicks and 10 marks back there with use most of the time very good (80% efficiency). Brand panics with ball in hand deep in defence a lot - Mirra did surprisingly well when needing to kick his way out of the backline under pressure.

Schoe was also OK. Made a contest, took 2 contested marks and kicked 2 goals. O'Brien would not have done better - in fact, in his 12 games this year he has only managed to kick a goal in 2 of them or take even a single contested mark in 3 of them. Those 2 or 3 games where he had any impact were also big wins for Hawthorn where the opposition pressure was low.

Duryea I agree was poor but could understand the thinking. More experienced and hard at it given we were undermanned as contested ball players go (Miles is still very young and slight).

The real selection error was Nash. Again, can understand the thinking in terms of needing a pressure player to lock it in with Cyril gone as pressure and intensity goes up a big notch in finals (and scores from turnovers is one of our main avenues to goal) BUT he is way, way too green. Can't use the footy yet, runs to the wrong spots and decision making is not there yet. Was an absolute liability with his 4 touches, 3 of which were clangers and no real defensive pressure. We should have known after last week.
I was all for Nash playing I was of the thought that the pressure he applied in his games leading up to the finals would serve the team well, obviously didn’t quite work out that way. But for the most part in both finals there was very little forward pressure and both the tigers and dees wandered out of our forward line way to easily the whole forward half seemed to drop the pressure not just Nash.

Shiels best season by far - always played his role but went to a new level this year and was a big contributor. kin especially has become really good. Should be in the top 5 or 6 in the B&F. Can't blame anyone else for the handball though. Once Sicily gains possession and gives to Shiels, Hawthron players rightly spread and push forward to create attacking options - you don't run to the ball (or behind it) in case someone makes a basic skill error.

Had plenty of time to at least get there ffs! How did the other dees get there?

Clarko game plan and system is very good to get an average team talent wise to the Top 4.
Team effort all year has been top class apart from Lions games.
So the team still wants to play for the great man.

Their physical efforts in the finals has been at 100%, I mean to be so competitive with so many players down comes down to effort, however.....I think the match committee has stunk it up in the last 2 weeks. More so than I can remember under Clarko

Trying to work out why Nash played at all in the finals.
Ceglar in the rain last week?
One tall tonight v McDonald and Weiderman? (Kicked 6 between them)?
Why Duryea tonight when Miles was great during the back end of the season?
No mid selected to take JOM’s place.
Just some of the things that crossed mind over the 2 matches.

did you miss that play or something?

Sicily got the ball, handballed it forward to Shiels who then attracted a crowd, Sicily runs past for a handball receive to clear it, Shiels handballs behind Sicily, when he was less than 5 metres away from him, then as Sicily's momentum takes him towards the 50m line he turns to see the 3 Dees players pick it up and score before he could even get momentum to even chase them down, that was completely Shiels stuff up.

Positive: Finals experience with back to back 90k plus people screaming at you should be good for the younger guys.

Considering where we were last year, the growth and improvement is there. Clarko said that we need at least 2-3 years before this group can play beautifully. So I will keep coming to the games and cheer you on guys.

Negative: the firework (is that considered as firework) after Hawks goal. That's wasteful :( if the club want to spend some money, should just give away free merchandise to supporters.

Go Hawks!!!!

Why oh why could we not have played the majority of the game like we did in the first eight or so minutes of that final quarter? I just don't get it; it's a semi-final, for f***'s sake! It's not like we didn't have it in us.

Next year will be determined by how we fare at the trade table, but based on our straight-sets exit and our prissy, tepid brand of football, who on earth would want to don the brown and gold next year? I can tell you; no one who will add value to this team. The three-peat years are vapour now; they mean nothing.

Why would a Gaff or a Shiel pick us over anyone else?
I hear what you are saying about the 8 or so minutes - Too many of our games this year were NOT a full 4 quarter effort. I think there were 2 or 3 games where we tried hard for 4 quarters. When we go at 100% for 4 quarters we are really good - and I would back us against anyone.

Is that fitness or inexperience ?

3rd quarter umpiring zcrewed us, but Gunston kicks that goal and I think we win.

I know clarko has planned for future years, but doesn't mean it's less frustrating when you see teams stream fwd unaccounted for
The Shiels stuff up after the Gunston miss, it’s one of the most annoying aspects of the Hawks game style, the unnecessary 1-2 handball. Absolutely no reason Sicily needed to give it off, he wasn’t about to be tackled and anyone leading to him would have to stop and go again. Every possession is another chance at a fumble. I’ve seen a lot more go bad after a 1-2 than good.

The game seemed closer than 5 goals but let's be honest that Melboune list has a hell of a lot more upside than ours.

The fact they didn't get ahead of themselves and won again is huge for them.

They do have good upside due to all their high picks , but that last few times I've been expecting to blown off the park and it hasn't happened. A good trade period and we can close the gap IMO

Sorry fellas. They were the better team.

Viney is one hard cnut. Wanted it more.

We’re 2 pure midfielders short at present. JOM injury was fatal. We all knew that.

Rough. I think it’s over mate.

Gunner. Was outstanding but putrid at the same time.

Breust can get ferked.

Burgoyne looked haggard.

Nash. Terrible selection.

A massive trade period beckons. The loss was brutal but required. Clarko will take no prisoners now. And you thought 2016 was big. Ferken look out.

Is there a more punchable face in the AFL?

C’mon mate, you’re better than that.

Rest of your post pretty spot on.

Yep. It's not as though we didn't know what Melbourne would bring to the table tonight. I was thinking we could handle it, I was wrong. There will be some serious head scratching over the next few weeks to determine where we go from here.

Our lead up to the finals wasn't all that exciting either. A loss to Brisbane (second for the year), 11 point win over Geelong and let's face it, who can't beat them? A 2 point win over St.Kilda, WTF???!!! and a 9 point win over a buddy-free Sydney (and everyone beats them in Sydney). Wins, but we really didn't hit the finals with any momentum whatsoever.

We hit the finals with more momentum than Geelong!

Am i right in saying 7 list changes in 2 weeks ?

Summary - we are not a Top 4 side...we are a worthy finalist but definitely not a premiership contender..yet.

Positives is that many of the next gen players tasted a couple of heated finals in front of 90k+ crowds - that will only make them better.

We definitely need another midfielder and a forward who can take a mark apart from Gunston.

It sucks to have to carry the burden of back to back straight set finals exits..
