So who won trade week!?

If Geelong getting Danger was "the win of the trade peiod" (even if it was as close to a sure thing as possible), then the Crows starting from the opposite side of that trade have come out pretty damn well outright, not just 'pretty well considering the Dangerfield loss'.

crows have lost danger and have not even nearly replaced him = big time losers

1. Geelong: They've brought in four best 22 players who are all about 25-26 years old who have major upside in them that will ultimately strengthen the Cats for next season and beyond and at the same time not losing any quality players and they've managed to keep that core of youngsters on it's list which is very impressive and Stephen Wells yet again getting his moneys worth. Cats the big winners here.

2. Essendon: Secured picks 4,5,24 and 25 in the National draft whilst getting Craig Bird from the Swans and Matthew Leuenberger as a Free Agent. They've done really well in this trade period.

3. Melbourne: Managed to upgrade their picks in the National draft and have now secured picks 3 and 7 as well as adding trio Ben Kennedy, Jake Melksham and Tomas Bugg who will all be in Melbourne's best 22.

4. Collingwood
5. St Kilda
6. Hawthorn
7. WCE
8. Adelaide
9. Port Adelaide
10. Gold Coast Suns

There is still a day to go so maybe a little early to make the call and even then it's on;y judging on face value rather than three years down the track. Having said that, I see it as follows so far:

Adelaide - Given the circumstances of losing Danger they have created a more balanced list with some players with pace and class. The addition of Menzel gives them the IMO the strongest forward line in the competition. Walker, Lynch, Jenkins, Menzel, Betts, Cameron. Perfect balance of talls, smalls, and pace. Managed to get an addition first round pick for Dangerfield (on top of what the FA compo would have been) and Gore as well. A great result.

Geelong - Got in one of the games top 5 players in Dangerfield and filled needs with Henderson (who would play down back you would think and return to form), Smith (provides them with a decent ruck finally), and Selwood who will be handy and add depth to the midfield. Targeted needs and landed them all. Win.

Melbourne - Initially didn't think giving up 25 for Melksham looked good. However, that does address a need and they have been ballsy to have another two top 10 draft picks to continue the list build. If they can draft Parish and Weideman then I think this would turn out to be an exceptional trade period for the Dees. Bugg is a handy player also.

Collingwood - Treloar is a jet. Did give up a lot to get him though. and now are out of the first round of the draft htis year and next. Howe is one I am not sold on but could be valuable if he settles on a position and improves his consistency. If they land Aish though then it tips the scales towards a big win in trade period.

Carlton - Really don't understand why people are saying this is a bad trade period for us. Kind of a situation of damned if you do and damned if you don't with he crowd on BigFooty. If we keep senior players people will say we need to rebuild. If we move on senior players to start a rebuild from the ground up we get canned for losing a lot of talent. We gave up very little to bring in 4 GWS players (2 of which are former top 10 picks) so if they don't work out then it is no big loss. Managed to get pick 8 for Henderson and pick 21 for Bell. Both wins. Kerridge is more than handy (and those who have seen him play locally on many occasions will agree with that). Couldn't really have had a better trade period given the players who wanted out. A lot will depend on how the Yarran and Tomlinson situation plays out, but I think the period has been a huge success for Carlton and the rebuild has well and truly started.

1. Geelong - Dangerfield, Henderson, A. Selwood, Smith, will be a force in 2016.
They also get bonus points for being professional and getting trades done without any hassle whatsoever.

2. Collingwood absolutely smashed it once again this trade period by receiving Treloar who is arguably the best young talent in the league could very well see them in finals next season + the possibility of receiving James Aish who was a top 10 talent in his draft year.

3. Carlton - You look at the bigger picture and you'll see why Carlton have done extremely well this trade period. They are rebuilding and laying down the foundations of a new era by injecting youth into the side.
5 quality players (ages 21-24) + picks 1, 8, 20, 21 (and possibly pick 12) is an incredible start of a rebuild and will no doubt benefit the club in the long run.

4. Essendon

5. Adelaide

6. Melbourne

...

18. Richmond

I actually haven't minded Carlton's work. They needed kids bad, and were (well still are) facing a really long rebuild. They turned some picks into 5 young guys. Sumner and Plowman probably have more scope to improve than the other two but they've helped fill a gaping hole in their list.

Yarran & Henderson leaving has been unavoidable and they've done moderately okay so far. Especially if they manage pick 19 for Yarran, that would be a win. To add:

Lachie Plowman
Liam Sumner
Sam Kerridge
Jed Lamb
Andrew Philipps
Jacob Weitering
Pick #8
Pick #19 (Yarran?)
Pick #20
Pick #21

in one offseason, it actually gives them some kids to play next year. Losing Menzel is a real bummer but you have to think he might have been out the door the next year anyway.

Losing Menzel wasn't a bummer and was part of a bigger picture strategy.
By picking up, then moving on pick 28 we were able to keep picks 20 and 21 for the last day of bargaining.
Menzel, Henderson and Yarran are all talented players but are all lacking in ticker when the hard yards need to be done, so their loss will compensated for by guys that WANT to play AFL and HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE.
I would be surprised if SOS goes to the draft with both or even either picks 20/21.
I think that they will be used for pick upgrades/player swaps on the last day. At worst, we will go to the draft with one of them but definitely not both.
Some people may come back and laugh at that statement in 24 hours time, but hey that's my take on it.
I would also be surprised if we don't add Tomlinson before the deadline.
We also hold both 59 and 60 so I wouldn't rule out Casboult to Freo or maybe Brisbane and a pick upgrade/steak knives deal.

I think Carlton have done pretty well already to add young players and an extra top 10 pick, yet no one else rates the addition of a top 10 pick? Bizzarre!

Other than that, Melbourne have done well to get an extra top 10 pick and upgrade.
(I think they will go for Parish).
Essendon did well to get an extra pick in the top 5.

I think some of the clubs that made the big moves will be sweating on having an injury free run for the next 3-5 years as they have left themselves light on for 1st and 2nd rounders.

From the perspective of Menzel being a very talented young player it's a bit of a bummer. I think you have come out of it well enough however.

5. St Kilda

I'd put us last by a long way. We overpaid for a guy with massive injury question marks and paid a very high price for a good player. We've got terrible position in this draft and we've already started crippling ourselves for next year, which is supposed to be stronger. Even ignoring the Carlisle crap, we had a poor trade period.

Josh Kennedy is a clogger?

Those Carlton and Sydney teams also had brilliant top end talent. It will take Carlton a minimum of four years to get that talent and that is if everything goes perfectly well at draft time. Which it hasn't for the past few years.

Don't think it will take that long we needed some young talent on the list and we got it with nine inclusions.

SOS main mission is to ensure we have a strong enough underbelly with youngsters with a highly structured TPP.

SOS and Allen will discuss Tomlinson today and Yarran will only leave for pick 12.

In - Pick1, Pick 8, Pick 12, Kerridge, Tomlinson, Plowman, Sumner, Lamb and Phillips.
Out - Henderson, Yarran, Menzel + Bell.

If Pick 1 + 8 + 12 + Tomlinson + Plowman + Kerridge work out.

Then we should have a dip at a free agent next year....O'Meara and Prestia will entice the Blues to no end they just need to be patient. But who knows; SOS is Boss.

Geelong win because we brought 4 guys in and traded 5 guys out, including the "biggest" trade of the season, with an absolute minimum of fuss and controversy.

Look at these clubs who can't even agree on one trade....we just did the business with no BS whatsoever.
Helps when you have been in the ear of the "biggest" trade all season.

Have Geelong really won?

In: Danger, Henderson, Smith, S Selwood
Out: Rivers, Stokes, Johnson, Jansen (today), Simpson, Kelly, McIntosh, Hartman, Blease, Toohey, Gore, 2015 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2016 1st.

Their earliest pick in this weak draft will be in the 4th round and they have 7 list spots to fill.

Majority of those outs don't hurt us whatsoever, and came well before trade week. You actually left out Walker who is arguably the biggest loss, based on this year's form, after Stevie J, and maybe Rivers.

Had we not had any of those outs, none of those are best 22 next year other than Stevie, and we've brought in 4 players who could easily slot straight in.

Think it's pretty even this year across the board, don't think any team has lost trade week. The introduction of the points system and future picks have been a revelation for all teams. Academy clubs are getting the points they need from a combination of later picks which gives non academy clubs the opportunity to climb back up the draft by swapping later picks. Without knowing it the AFL has created a system of somewhat equalization.

More about systems and talent. 7 draftees, particularly that late, aren't going to be ready to play. Your top 30 is great, but 31-38 is a massive worry.

After just playing in a grand final the Eagles improved our best 22 with limited damage to depth. Couldn't be happier with that.

We now have three picks in the 30s which once academy picks are taken away will drop a few spots. Certainly a good run of picks to add further depth to our side after an awesome draft last season.

Still a chance we may look to package some picks to improve our draft position but overall we've done very well.

Add up everyones draft pick points and whomever has the higest, wins!

Nice tangible way to decide it.

Screw those inconsiderate teams that brought in players! ;)

Exactly. Scott has traded away the future to protect his job because another bad year next year he is out of a job. Collingwood have done the same thing.

I really see Melbourne as the winners. So many early picks despite having done better in 2015 than in 2014. They can make cheeky attempts at academy players and then get some great players in a supposedly shallow draft. 2016 may be another average year for them, but I would think in 2017 they will be pushing for finals.

Hawks have also done well. First time in over a decade that we have had 2 picks in the first round. Though there is still 5 hours to go. Graham Wright still has time to make a move.
