The battle of the undefeated coaches Pt 1
This is a match that St Kilda should win fairly comfortably (10 goals) but the Saints have not won many matches as comfortably as they should have in recent matches.
Maybe this is a danger game for the Saints, complacency being the issue, I hope not but history shows that if your mind is not on the job at hand then there is a danger that the underdogs could get away from you.
We have not lost against Richmond since that match early in 2003 where Grant Thomas lambasted the playing group. He told them that they were better than Richmond (he was harshly criticised in the media at the time for saying so, but history now shows he was right). 10 consecutive subsequent wins have laid emphasis on his words. But recent history shows that although we keep winning, we are not winning as handsomely as we have in earlier times. Four of the last five matches were decided by under three goals. The Saints seem to be doing just enough to win. They haven't smashed Richmond since Rd 17 2006 where we won by a massive 103 pts. I don't expect to win this match so hugely, but I am hoping for a very good win by the boys. Eight to ten goals would be a nice margin.
The Saints have only one match to go before the big benchmark test.
The Tigers have been compromised by injury, poor form and off field issues that have impacted on their on-field performance. They have sacked their coach and dumped many of their senior players.
As happens so often in these situations, the kids have come out all fired up and won the first match for their new coach.
I understand where Richmond are at from bitter experience. Most Sainters can empathise.
But here we are in the best form of our club's existence - riding the crest of a wave which has built up over twelve consecutive wins - we should expect to win this match - and we should expect to win this match fairly easily.
We want to gather momentum for the next match, that is for sure, but mostly we need to focus on beating Richmond as comprehensively as possible because that what good sides do. We need to exercise our killer instincts, practice our ruthlessness, learn to really put a team away.
Richmond are the wounded prey - now its up to the Saints to go out there and hunt them down...
