Best news of all was no injuries of significance. Morris sat out the last qtr with a niggle but that was it.

Gunston getting through with flying colours is huge. He looked great. Perhaps not prolific but won some big contests, and his skills are sublime. Kicked probably the goal of the match from 40 out over his shoulder running towards the boundary but it was touched off the boot.

In the last qtr the Box Hill lads' skills went to crap as fatigue set in and so Gold barely got going at all. Brown were kicking goals at will.

They kept re-setting the scoreboard to put Brown a few goals down and try and create some pressure scenarios but it didn't work cos they were just piling them on.

I thought Hardwick, who was the lone senior player in the Gold backline for most of the match was excellent.

Howe looks so composed now, does the right thing all the time.

Of the kids, MacDonald probably caught my eye the most. Such a smooth mover.

Seamus did maybe one elite thing each qtr, but not a whole lot else. He played as a deep forward crumber. We were missing a few of our small fwd options (Wingard, Brockman, Butler).

Sicily slotted the last goal of the game with a running shot got everyone up and about.

Intraclub game

It was a stinker of a day heat wise. I very quickly moved to the shade provided by the great John Jennedy Snr to watch the game with houdinihuddo & SYL. Ordovician joined us in the 2nd Qtr.

Here are my thoughts (sorry If I am repeating what others have already said or contradicting what others have said. Actually, on second thoughts, I'm not sorry):

Gold

Gunners
T Philips
Big Boy
Parsons
Lynch
Jekka
Shiels
Rule
Worpel
Ward
Morris
Lewis
Porter
Aducci
Hardwick
Newcomb
Green
Moore

Brown

Finn
Jaeger
Macdonald
Bramble
Seamus
DGB
Seeing
Kosi
Callow
Howe
Hartigan
Sicily
T Mitchell
Reeves
Ed Philips
Frosty
Scrimshaw
Wynd
Morrison

Best on (in my opinion):

Newcombe
Howe
Moore
Lewis

Newcombe dominated in the midfield and went forward and had an impact. Kicked at least a couple. He is a beast. Remember, this is his first AFL preseason. Lock for round 1.

Lewis spent a lot of time playing on shorter opponents, nonetheless he was outstanding today. Great marking and a bag of goals. Don't know how many he kicked, 5 maybe plus a few behinds. He also got up the ground and took marks. Huge game from him.

Moore was brilliant. His overhead marking was a strength and he basically just caused havoc in the forward half offensively and defensively. Kicked a ripper goal . Sublime game from Dylan

Howe was excellent from the first bounce to the last. Spent time at half back and on the wing and was effective everywhere he went. I have him playing round 1.

Callow had a great day. He dominated early, dropped off a little bit but was consistently good. He got up the ground and took marks, delivered nicely to the forwards. I think he got a goal or two and did some rucking at one point.. Promising signs.

Ward & Macdonald were both excellent. I would actually give Macdonald the edge over Ward today. He combined well with Jaegar & Tom. Jaegar had a slow start but came alive in qtr 2 and dominated for a while and was very good from then onwards. Mitchell was also good.

Worpel was probably the next best mid after Newcombe.

Morrison was excellent. The epitome of composure and like Howe, just effective with everything he did, including some sublime runs down the middle. Round 1 liley, but who misses out?

Surprise of the day was Ned Long. He was really good all day. His kicking is outstanding.

Reeves had the better of Lynch in the ruck. He worked well with Tom & Jaegar. and took a fantastic mark in the back 50. Lynch got better later in the game thanks to his endurance. I also like the way that Lynch gets involved around the ground. Seems to be a reliable user of the ball. I think they will be a good combo in the coming years.

Defender wise, Sicily was outstanding just doing what he always does. Denver was unhinged in all the right ways. Hartigan had a bit of a downer but has been very good every other session I've seen.

Scrimshaw was classy as you would expect and Hardwick just did what he always does.

Seamus Mitchell had a 5 minute patch at the end of the the first qtr where he was up and about and probably had two or three goal assists.

Tom Philips was rarely sighted. Same for Jeka.

Did not play:
Wingard
Impey
CJ
Day
Nash
O'Hara
Brockman
Thanks for the great report again. (and Kambo, thank you as well)

Did Ned Long play predominantly as a mid today? or were there occasions he was shifted forward?

How good is it to hear about all these kids coming through.

Taking this from the Axes post “Newcombe dominated in the midfield and went forward and had an impact. Kicked at least a couple. He is a beast. Remember, this is his first AFL preseason. Lock for round 1” - I wonder if we tanked all of the first half of last year to make sure we picked him up?

Can we get a rundown of the article?

Axeman's and Kambo's versions are better.

Anyway I have pasted below which I think are the important bits of the article.

Hawthorn’s hopes of delivering coach Sam Mitchell a strong debut season have lifted after Jack Gunston, James Sicily, Mitch Lewis and a top draftee were among those to impress in an intra-club match at Waverley on Tuesday.
Sicily has not played a senior match since round 12, 2020 because of a knee reconstruction while Gunston managed only one match last season, but both are keen to play key roles under Mitchell and a new-look assistant coaching panel.

James Sicily has been sorely missed by the Hawthorn
Gunston, having overcome back issues which led to surgery, spent the morning up forward where he has made a name for himself as one of the league’s premier sharpshooters.
He worked well alongside Dylan Moore (27 goals last season) and Lewis, who is preparing for his sixth season and has declared he needs to improve. Lewis booted eight goals, leading and marking well, and wants to be a key figure inside attacking 50, having contributed 22 goals in 14 matches last year.

“I feel like I’ve underperformed, especially last year and the year before, so I’m looking forward to having a big 2022 season,” Lewis said last month.

“Hopefully, our style of ball movement and game plan can help the forwards have a strong season.”
Moore booted five goals and appears set for another strong season. Sicily is central to the Hawks’ defensive plans, where his athleticism and drive are crucial.
Josh Ward, the Hawks’ top draftee of 2021 and No.7 overall, began at the centre bounce and wowed onlookers with his dash and ball use. Ward has long been a major accumulator and his aerobic capacity was on show in the heat.

Fellow draftee and midfielder Connor Macdonald (pick 26) was also busy in the contest.
Reappointed captain Ben McEvoy was also used up forward, allowing Ned Reeves and recruit Max Lynch to be used in the ruck. Lynch, the former Magpie, was signed on the final day of last year’s trade period.

“Obviously, it’s very different. ‘Clarko’ spent a hell of a lot of time at the club over the journey ... but it’s a very exciting time at the club,” Lewis said.
https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl...melbourne-and-afl-report-20220208-p59ul4.html

“Everyone is very optimistic about the season ahead – he [Mitchell] has set out a really strong game plan that we can all follow.”

Thanks, as always, for the work big Axe!

General question about Shiels - with some really gunning for the axe to fall on Morrison and Howe given the new crop of midfield talent, do you see Shiels’ position under threat given Morrison and Howe seem to be doing well this pre-season?
Shiels was good. Typical workman like game from him, but always classy.
Can I get more on Titch please
Tom combined well with Jaegar in the middle. He got a lot of the ball and often found O'Meara or Macdonald as his release man. Spent time at half back as well.
Thanks for the great report again. (and Kambo, thank you as well)

Did Ned Long play predominantly as a mid today? or were there occasions he was shifted forward?
Long played as mid and pushed forward at times. Ned was a real surprise packet today.

How did aducci go?

:D:D:D

Quote of the report. Can't wait to see him out there.
The only thing that concerns me about Denver is the fact that he’s probably going to hurt himself before he hurts anyone else. 😂

Thanks Axe, so awesome getting this info from you each year. I hadnt considered this is Newcs first pre-season...very exciting. How did Gunna and Finn go? Sounds like Nash will find it hard to get into the rnd 1 side from here.

I would have Sic, Scrim, Frost and Hardwick as absolute locks down back. Those 4 could realistically be named AA in 2022 based on their ability to play footy and if the Hawks can make top 8. Yes, CJ, Day, Impey etc are exciting with their run and dash but give me high level disposal, calmness under pressure and consistency, every day of the week.
Fair enough although I'd argue that Day provides high level disposal, calmness under pressure and consistency, along with run and dash while Frost isn't always calm, he sometimes goes a bit mad (although I don't mind that too much). Day's injuries have been his only source of inconsistency imo.

Agree but Day hasnt had the chance to prove consistency due to injury and Frosts ability to stop a Buddy Franklin type cant be underestimated. His closing speed and ability to spoil is first class and I think he didnt do as many of those shocking turnovers later in the 2021 year than he has done previously. Ive vowed to give him one of those per game if he keeps playing the way he has hahaha.

Great work on all the write ups Axeman and crew.

Apart from seeing our next crop of youngsters (Ward, DGB, etc) take the next step in 2022 the thing I may most looking forward to is watching the Blonde Prince of Glenferrie James Sicily back on the field.

Our team (and the game overall) has been the lesser the last two years in his absence, he is the Vincent Van Gogh of Aussie Rules. A true artisan.

Did Kosi play? Seems to have not been noted by watchers so guessing he didn't do a lot if he did? How did he compare to Jeka and Callow since they all play the same position?

Appreciate all the posts here, we are getting close to a practice match which will be nice to see!

Kosi competed mostly deep forward. Didn't have a great day. Lewis was the target when they were on the same side. Kosi had a few shots at goal from marks but was a bit wayward.

Jeka also played deep but couldn't get near it.

Callow pushed further up the ground and clunked quite a lot of good marks. Gunston also played higher up the ground.

Fergus Greene got a few touches playing the Gunston role and also got collected heavily in a marking contest.

Another Box Hill tall also played forward - Lachy Wynd took some great marks in the 1st half and snagged a couple of goals, but went out of it after that.

Posted a potential team in the Round 1 Team prediction thread based heavily on Kambo's report. Cheekily managed to squeeze a few in by assuming CJ and Day wouldn't be ready to go. But now I read The_Axeman's report and find MacDonald (who I squeezed in as sub) and Howe (who was absent from the other reports and presumed to be having a poor game) are probably worthy of starting 18 spots.

All I can say is if we keep a largely fit list this year Box Hill is going to have a very exciting team.

Ah heck I love Sicily thumping goals. Especially when he thanks Joey D after
