News surjan on the move

Its worth *someone* taking a look at his game again if they can stomach the whole day's experience. That chase on franklin in the first quarter was great. I said earlier I didn't notice Surj much after that but I couldn't tell you who he was supposed to be on either. There was a time when Kane went less noticed because he was tagging/stopping too and that often doesn't show up on TV real well unless you're looking for it instead of following the ball around.

He was on Rioli for maybe a third of the game. He also did a better job on him than anyone else.

While I did say "great" I probably used the wrong word. He was arguably our best defender and hence I would label his game as good to great in a relative sense. Overall he offered a lot of things that other players didn't and while he wasn't anywhere near perfect I certainly wouldn't be dropping him from our side anytime soon.

Pearce was on Rioli in the 1st quarter when he kicked 4 goals

Reali??

did u miss the chase donw on franklin?
Or when he put his body on the line against Bateman....
Name me one other player on the day that put his body on the line like that?
Wont make the stats sheet but better then an extra couple kicks!!

The whole problem with Sujan IS that he leaves his man or zone all the time to supposedly help out. Things end up worse because he breaks down the structure.

Salter? or Surjan?

i was responding to the quote of Salter being massively underrated...not Surj

Salter gives away way too many free kicks, and gets out marked just about every time

Surj i would have in my best 22 every game

^ ahhh sorry my mistake!

Re-read what you put and didnt see salter just presumed you meant Surj!
yep easy to miss that.. being in a Surjan thread and all

Surj does need to get himself in better shape, but his endeavour and effort is always there, so hopefully we keep him.. he has a ripper pre-season and gets back to the Surj we all know and love.

Salter on the other hand... if we want to play him as a defender we should delist/trade him now. He is not a defender. Hever has been never will be

Let him play SANFL for the eagles and kick 70 goals a year until another AFL club gives him a go in the forwardline

I'm not sure you understand the premise of a zone that well Dustholian.

A positional problem or imbalance further up the ground becomes magnified for defenders and vice-versa. For instance, if a defender leaves his allocated zone to run and carry, it's assumed (it should be coached) the zone rotates to cover that loss, almost like turning a wheel a small fraction (say 5-10 degrees). If the zone doesn't rotate to cover the loss of the player, then it creates mismatches and requires extra work from the people attempting to protect it who have been left exposed. That requires them leaving their own allocated areas to cover the loss and affect the next contest.

That's where your comment would come from.

Unfortunately Surjan leaves his zone unnecesarily and whilst he looks good doing so, the rest of the team struggle to cover him. Often he doesn not need to move out of the zone or the damage caused by him moving is greater than the benefit.

There's far to much negativity around these boards at the moment so I'll just have to say I disagree with you from my observations at both AAMI, in the SANFL and from television broadcast.

He's one of the few players who despite whatever limitations you believe he has appears to understand positioning on the field well. It was one of the reasons I would have preferred he stayed in AFL ranks, to help the kids understand positioning given he executes that well in my opinion.

Great interview with Surjan on 5AA.

Was quite positive and upbeat about the situation.
Spoke of a hard training session today, complete with fisticuffs.
Said outright that he is contracted for next year and wants to stay. Said that he loves the club.
Spoke of his disappointment with non-selection this year but stands behind Primus, saying that he'll be a great coach.

To me he sounds like a player that has been told what he needs to do to get back in the side and is going to do what he needs to do to get back there.

Couldnt help thinking whilst listening that we cannot afford to lose guys like this......

it was a much needed interview tonight I think it did some good, I know personally it did. I had lunch at the club today and Jacob was with Sal and O'Shea and a couple others at one table. I kept looking over to him as our (depressing) conversation revolved around the clubs woes and I really felt like walking over and asking where he was gonna be next year. Last number I got in the club shop was his so I really wanted to find out where he was at. Then what happens, he is on 5AA two hours later and says all the right things genuinely and confirmed he wants nothing more than to stay a Port man. Brilliant stuff, I think he's given a lot of fans confidence for the weekend, even if we turn up setting up to lose again....

he also put things into perspective well and hopefully the types who call up with absolutely no idea what's going on will understand a bit more. we have people lumping surj, ebo etc in as "older players shifted off to the side for the youngins whether they deserve it or not" but how many people care to remember ebo and his LARS reconstruction? the fact that surj did not come in fit and has had to work until half way through this year before he felt like AFL quality? of course it's done on purpose to us but our supporters should remember every player has their own career and things aren't just done slap dash, we are not as unprofessional as everyone is painting, we're just corrupted..

Agree 100% great interview by Surjan and reminded me of why I've always rated him so much. Was refreshing to have someone so positive about where we are heading and what we where doing to turn it around. Sounded every bit like a leader and accepted full responsibility for his own fitness and form.

I hope they give him another run this week!

Agree with oporto, cannot afford to have players like this out of our club.

Spadge was talking about Salter not Surjan in relation to Pettigrew - a few seem to have missed that;)

Well, this is a thread about Surjan and not Salter. (has there ever been a bigger cult favourite on this board who has been mistreated/played out of position? EDIT: Don't answer that in this thread)
