I think I know what he was doing but I’m not exactly sure of the rule. Lobb took the mark on the wing/ hbf area. If you take a mark at the other end of the ground the umpire will take you back on a line through the mark and the centr of the goal line. Because we play on an oval shaped field Lobbwent back along the boundary line which at that area curves in. The Swans player thought this meant Lobb was moving in board and a play on call should have been made.
When the same mark is taken in the forward line and the player is back against the fence on the line set by the umpire he is not allowed to follow the boundary line around and must just take a shorter run up.
That’s my take on his reasoning.
Regardless, you have to wait until the umpire calls play on. Weightman got pinged for the same reason in the first quarter

It’s actually pretty incredible how our backline looks given how makeshift it somewhat is.

We have three ‘failed’ forwards turned defenders (Jones, Lobb & Dale) all playing AA quality footy. Khamis was nearly delisted last year. Bramble was delisted last year. Coffield was highly rated but has significant injury issues for years. Duryea was somewhat cast aside by the Hawks as a non-vital piece.
Pick 43 - Wood
SSP - Fletcher Roberts
DFA - Hamling
Rookie picks - JJ, M Boyd, Biggs, Morris

Personally I have no problems with a 'makeshift' defence if it's well put together and coached :)

Take a look at the side selected for round 1. And then take a look at the side from the weekend.

The differences aren't as stark as some would have it.

Except for some pivotal positional changes, tweaking around the fringes of the side and the injured Johannisen and Harmes. I think it could be argued that the team that we currently have is the team that he wanted from the start.

The only exceptions are inclusion of Duryea (into the side in Round 3.), Sanders and Gallagher who have been in the side for much of our run over the last couple of months, the phenomenal rise of Darcy and the craziness of Lobb going from not being dropped after Round 1. to being a corner stone of an all of a sudden rock solid and stingy defensive outfit. However, this is something that by his own admission not even Beveridge foresaw.

The only real casualties have been Macrea and Daniel. The other of the controversial omissions that had the likes of Cane Korns up in arms early in the season was Bailey Dale and I think it can be argued that his commission from the side was the foot up the arse that will probably see him in the AA squad. If not the team.

Personally I think that Beveridge went into the season with a pretty clear idea of the team he wanted and the attacking game plan that he wanted to implement. It just took a little longer than he expected for the team to transform from the shambolic mess that it was earlier when it was dealing with injuries. To what for the most part we've seen for the last 10 weeks. When I was wavering about Beveridges future, it was because he looked lost for ideas. With hindsight, I think he was just befuddled and frustrated with the lack of cohesion that what was on display as the team sorted through its issues.

yeah, it was always about the ancient game plan that was hamstringing us against teams that had the will and ability to burst thru a stodgy old zone press, and if they didnt kick a goal, wait for us to shuffle the ball back around the boundary so they could try again.

The fact that an elite mid has fallen from the skies in Ed Richards is pretty huge, no arguing that, but we still beat the 2nd side that was up for their captains 150th without Ed AND Treloar - shows how much the a decent gameplan has made us better than the sum of our parts - rather than worse.

Kind of annoys me hearing 'wow, lobb to CHB has really turned the dogs around' ridiculous.

Still not sure about Buku under pressure on the deck.

I think I prefer Coffield as the third tall/medium sized defender. Khamis has been very good since coming back into the team but he does cause some heart in mouth moments especially when he disposes of it. It is a nice problem to have with having one in the team and one as depth.

We just need to settle Khamis into that midsized defender role permanently in the VFL and the seniors.

Imagine his athletic and marking prowess combined with even just an average level of defensive reliability and rebound.

Do we back him in the finals tho  Coff seemed a little bit rusty at times last week

The moment Buku realises he belongs at the level and starts to add some offensive into his game as well he will come on in spades. Have faith people, that ability is definitely there, its the confidence and realisation that he can turn defense into offensive which is slowly coming along. He needs to get more involves as a third tall, run off his opponent, back his runners up etc. I'm sure he will get there and be better than both Coffield and JOD in the long run.

Hope so. He would be an absolute weapon if he did.

No he won’t he played a good 2 weeks without Jones but again showed his large weaknesses when he doesn’t have a proper opponent as a guide

I feel like in previous years gone by when teams started to get momentum and come back from behind we would crumble but now we have a genuine match winner in Jamarra and Darcy and feel like we are gonna turn the corner to become an elite top 4 team over the next few years
And we haven’t even mentioned Naughton so that’s how good our forwards are going.
And I don’t know why I was typing in italics but I couldn’t be arsed fixing it

To be fair, our supporters whine just as much.
I prefer to just consintrate on our club
GWS for some strange reason also live rent free in our heads.
Because you can never be forgiven for running out of beer at half time. That shitty cider in the 2nd half is not something I easily forget or forgive!!

Bramble was sensational. He’s not as electric as JJ at his best, but he’s giving us some spark off half back, whilst also being reliable at the defensive side. Coffield very solid again, dependable. You can’t have too many smart footballers.

The midfield structure is much better than earlier in the year, or last year. We’re not leaving a gaping out hole out the front of centre bounces any more. The mix with Bont, Libba, Treloar and Richards is great.

English was fine today. Broke even with Grundy around the ground and was part of our defensive wall. That’s about as much a you can ask for. Grundy smashed him in the taps as expected but he’s not very sharp with his tap work so I don’t think it made any difference.

Happy for Jamarra to get some reward the last three weeks. And likewise very happy with Naughton’s work at true CHF even if he isn’t getting amongst the goals every week. The separation between them now is paying dividends for both and the team.

Jones was incredible in the first quarter. They just could not get past him. Wouldn’t have thought he’d missed a minute. Lobb also very good again. Will be interesting to see him and Jones on a bigger ground and whether they might get caught on spread/turnover occasionally. Although Jonesy is still quite quick and Lobb’s endurance is elite. Can we quietly wind back that Barrass offer?

Very happy for McNeil to kick a couple. I always thought his speed and pressure/tackling were good, but those shanks in front of goal were horrendous. I think I was more optimistic about him than most, but even I conceded earlier this year when he wasn’t getting games that he was probably done. Hope he proves us all wrong and keeps his spot. Still only 22.
McNeil always has had plenty of upside, we need players of his pace

Pardon for visiting, want to give my props and respect to Bevo, haven't seen such an under pressure coach turn his teams fortune around since Laurie Holden

Moving Ed Richards into the midfield this season and the weekly improving Rhyle West as a damaging small foward has been sensational, as has throwing the Lobbster down back.

He is bit of a different fellow to most other coaches, but clearly Bevo loves your footy club and players and is a winner, and I am glad he is winning your trust and faith back.

He is one of footy's truly decent and authentic people imo.
He never lost my trust or faith, there was always method in his madness.
Gold star for mentioning The Club it was a funny movie

The next four games are all danger games. WE MUST NOT GET AHEAD OF OURSELVES, WE HAVE TO KEEP PLAYING THE WAY WE ARE AND WE CAN GO REALLY, REALLY, REALLY FAR!!!
Yeah nah getting ahead of myself is my strong suit.
We will crush everything any everyone that gets in our way before we hold that Cup again!

I still love footy.

What a 3 game stretch.

Bevo frustrates us all at times, but when he has his eye in there are few better.

We finally have worked out the forward mix.

The backline looks unstoppable as long as there is midfield pressure.

We’re the best team in it at the moment. Let’s just hope we can maintain the fire.

Go Dogs.
Bevo frustrates me less than some of our fans I can guarantee you

To be fair much of the board has been screaming for one of the tall 4 to be sent back. There is so much talent in the Darcy/Lobb/JUH/Naughts group but at least one had to fall out. It’s either play back or play VFL. I would have sent Naughts back early in the season.

The brilliant (maybe less obvious to make) move was letting Naughton free to roll between mid and half-forward. Outside the Lobb/Richards changes, the impact of that move on freeing up space up front, forcing someone to keep him accountable and connecting the lines is “magnificent”.
The brilliant move was playing Lobb down back when he was in good form. Bevo recognised he was playing to good to be dropped and throwing him down back was no last ditch move to find him some form

I was wrong. The recruitment team, the selection panel were right. The recruitment of Lachie Bramble is the steal of the year. Now an integral part of this team. He just needed to feel the faith and love, he has repaid I spades.
This recruitment has released the ginger ninja to the midfield, which in turn has energised our season.
I'm still a massive critic of VDMs selection but well done to Lachie and the people behind his continued improvement.
👍
Kudos for your apology but you need to ease up on VDM. His run is absolutely important to us. His role is not to kick chase it’s to run hard and fill the defensive space. It’s what leads to turnovers and then our ability to score from them by rebounding at pace
