The other clubs don't get the option to put these resources in, other than for a much smaller percentage of a smaller population.
Sure it's already been said but Gulden amongst others would be lost to the game without the Academy so surely they're a good thing. Agree that the bidding process should be refined though, but still think the club that puts the resources and time into developing a player should have first rights to them.

Because the larger percentage already have the resources.

In NSW you have still got mums and dads who have barely ever held a Sherrin coaching juniors right through the age groups.

The offset being that the majority of players drafted come from states of said clubs, meaning that it's a lot easier for them to pick those players off after a year or two of those players being developed at AFL level.

There's natural inequities across the comp - newer clubs don't have father/son options as one of the sillier but real examples of it - having Academies that broaden the talent pool in the comp isn't something that should be done away with just because the Swans are finally looking good.

Our Academy has produced plenty of misses, but the hits are obviously the focus.

Why is Errol Gulden being discussed in the same boat as others? He was a second round pick and very gettable IMO.

Here's a question. If GWS didn't match a bid for Jeremy Cameron and Geelong bid on Errol Gulden at pick 23 would he be wearing the hoops or would Sydney match anyway and cop the deficit?

I can remember posting in the draft thread that was our concern re: points, that Gulden would be bid on in the mid teens as there was reportedly some interest that high?

Obviously it never came about, but we were always comfortable that campbell wouldnt be top 4 pick and thus we'd get him

Nah. They get a few academy kids but it'll be years and a lot of growth at junior level before they get the go home factor giving them access to a couple of players a year. Pretty much evens out imo.

The go home factor is overrated in my view, it’s often just more cash given a reason that doesn’t make the player look like a mercenary.

GWS had salary cap issues, bigger issue than the go home factor.

You will probably get one of those NSW/qld academy guys making a big money move to a Vic club at some point.

The only reason bidding teams trade out 'good' picks is to double dip. GWS traded around in circles to draft Lachie Ash at pick 4 then get Tom Green at 10 for later picks.

I remember back in the 2000s when there were first round priority picks for being sh*t. We got Judd and Sampi, Hawthorn got Roughead and Franklin, Richmond took Tambling, Freo traded theirs for magic beans. Etc.

By the time those rules were gone and we were sh*t again we took Andrew Gaff at pick 4 as Gold Coast had the first 3 picks. Would've been awesome to take Gaff and know that Conca or Cripps or Darling or any other WA player would also be hours at a discount. Likewise would've been nice the following year when we were top 4 to take Steve Coniglio at pick 2.

It’s very different, NSW isn’t an AFL dominant place like WA, Vic and SA are. When there are Isaac heeneys coming through every year, you may have a point.

Thing is he went pick 32, now he’s being spoken about like they got the next Ablett Jnr for free.

Wow first time a player taken late (?!) in the draft has come good.

Where did Geelong take Kelly?

Difference is that in the heartland states AFL has a good chance of winning the battle for those talented juniors who are good at a lot of sports. In Sydney previously the AFL would be like a 70 year old man with a missing leg up against the NRL in a battle for those talented players. Now the old man has been given a knife so he at least stands a chance.

Caucasian kids are getting trampled by Pasifika kids 20-30kg heavier than them in junior league. Look at representative teams in SG Ball and Harold Matthews and it's getting to 50/50 caucasian/pasifika. It's not until footballers get to around 19-20 years of age that the caucasian boys begin to get on an even footing, but many of them have left the game by then.

AFL is getting a bigger share of NSW kids now who would ordinarily play rugby league.

People act like the go home factor is huge, it only happens on mass when the team is poor and has a crap culture. Port and West Coast don't lose players, Brisbane aren't now, Sydney never have.

It is. Look what happened to GWS. They had to overpay a few "stars" to keep them at GWS to the point where they ruined their salary cap. Then look at all the players that buggered off from Gold Coast and Brisbane when they were poor. Melbourne and Carlton didn't have to worry about that level of players leaving when they were really crap.

It is harder for traditionally non-football states to keep players when the team is at the bottom of the ladder, meaning it is harder to rebuild.

Yes that is not talked about enough but it is helping the AFL that Rugby League is a sport seemingly designed for Polynesian ancestory, and that 12 year old Polynesian kids absolutely monster the kids of other races at the same age. The 10 to 12 year old range is so important in deciding what sport a kid is going to really put their focus on, and for Rugby League the kids who are not Polynesian are probably not keen on being smashed every single week.
