It is. Look what happened to GWS. They had to overpay a few "stars" to keep them at GWS to the point where they ruined their salary cap. Then look at all the players that buggered off from Gold Coast and Brisbane when they were poor. Melbourne and Carlton didn't have to worry about that level of players leaving when they were really crap.

It is harder for traditionally non-football states to keep players when the team is at the bottom of the ladder, meaning it is harder to rebuild.

We lost players when we sucked with players wanting to leave, and not many wanting to come.

No the difference both Gold Coast and GWS were handed top draft pick after top draft pick so they had talent to plounder, Melbourne and Carlton were just plain shit.

Yes that is not talked about enough but it is helping the AFL that Rugby League is a sport seemingly designed for Polynesian ancestory, and that 12 year old Polynesian kids absolutely monster the kids of other races at the same age. The 10 to 12 year old range is so important in deciding what sport a kid is going to really put their focus on, and for Rugby League the kids who are not Polynesian are probably not keen on being smashed every single week.

One thing AFL becoming more of a career pathway is it could take guys away from cricket in NSW.

May weaken our national side when you consider half our best side is from NSW. (Cue NSW conspiracy selections, but obviously Warner, Smith, Cummins, Hazelwood, Lyon and probably still starc are in our best side)

Didn't Judd come home from WCE while you were sh*t?

Yes though we had largely built a list to be competitive by then, which was borne out by us winning 10 games in Judds first season.

We didn’t get much before him, and of recent times SOS got totally desperate and got Mitch McGovern from Adelaide when no one else wanted to come after a 2 win season in 2018.

You have absolutely pillaged GWS tho.

Nankervis, Membrey, Jones, Dunkley, Jetta

Almost Papley to.
Nankervis was traded due to depth not because of the home factor, would've been delisted other wise.
Membrey was delisted.
Jones was pushed out of Sydney
Dunkley?
Jetta maybe but it's not like Sydney wanted to keep him.

Proved my point. :thumbsu:

What players out of interest?

Players we wanted to stay but left:

Grigg
Henderson
Yarran
Waite
Gibbs

Ones who we let go for nothing because Malthouse was a moron:

Betts
Robinson
Laidler
Garlett

We also let Tuohy go to Geelong because SOS had a hard on for Marchbank, who is more myth than man at this point.

So yes some left because they wanted to, and even more went because we have had terrible list management (less so since Mick went)

Nankervis apparently wanted out of Sydney pretty early on.

Membrey was delisted because it was easier to get him to St Kilda that way, and we were putting his needs first.

Jones was not pushed, he wanted to go back home.

Dunkley told the Swans before the draft that he would nominate for the club, but he only wanted us to match the bid on him if another non-Victorian team bid on him. He told us that if a Victorian club bid on him then he did not want us to match. So Sydney were literally his 11th choice.

Jetta definitely wanted to go home for family reasons and we very much wanted to keep him.

Why is Errol Gulden being discussed in the same boat as others? He was a second round pick and very gettable IMO.

Here's a question. If GWS didn't match a bid for Jeremy Cameron and Geelong bid on Errol Gulden at pick 23 would he be wearing the hoops or would Sydney match anyway and cop the deficit?

He would still be a Swan.
Has always been rated on par with Campbell by the Swans.

That is completely wrong but ok

We delisted Membrey to make it easier so he could train with St.Kilda right away.
Jones was NOT pushed out of Sydney he wanted to go back home as he missed his family
Yes we passed on Dunkley per his request he wanted to be closer to family in Victoria only using us as a insurance policy if one of the WA/SA clubs bidded on him.

In 2018 there were 200k organised participants in AFL programs in SA. NSW had more, including over 140k juniors.

Maybe SA needs some help to combat a falling population and aging.
It’s very different, NSW isn’t an AFL dominant place like WA, Vic and SA are. When there are Isaac heeneys coming through every year, you may have a point.

For a net gain of, not very much. Not sure now many GWS wanted to hang onto.

I think they’d have wanted to keep Williams (obviously), Setterfield, Marchbank and maybe Plowman.

Of the above Setterfield has shown glimpses, but is one paced, Marchbank can’t get on the park and Plowman is decent (though awful last week)

They probably wanted to keep Jakesh but they made out like bandits with that deal.

All the rest were either duds, handy backup or broken down injury Hail Marys (Phillips, Lamb, Sumner, Whiley and Palmer).

We missed out on a few targets we wanted as well from GWS, like Shiel, Stewart, Tomlinson and Hoskin Elliott.

Other clubs have done better out of GWS than us.

I don’t trust those AFL numbers, probably counts kids who did Auskick in PE.

Dunkley was never a Swan, just like Wingard saying he wanted to stay in SA. We know how that ended.
Membrey was delisted as he wasn't required player, if he was playing regular senior football he would have stayed.
Nankervis moved for opportunity, he wasn't rated full stop, don't rewrite history.
Sydney low balled Jones (pushed out), he moved for a bigger contract.
Mitchell left for money and didn't go back to his home state.

Franklin left because he wanted to get out of Melbourne.
Same with Plugger, Hall.
Yet people whinge about those 3 ad infinitum.
