We don’t get a top 5 kid every year from the Academy plus our own first round pick. That has occurred once. In a year we finished 16th.

Jesz. For the 1000th time in this thread. It's not about Sydney specifically, it's about the bidding system.

It's occurred 4 times in the last 2 drafts in the first 25 picks. Sydney is obviously the most notable because it involved a top 4 pick.

Sydney 2020
Fremantle 2019
GWS 2019
Port Adelaide 2019

This wouldn’t even be a discussion but for North’s passing on McDonald.

It has nothing to do with McDonald the player, but a top 4 pick in general. There is absolutely no scenario in which a club should be able to manufacturer a top 5 pick out of junk picks.

That idea gives clear incentive for clubs to bid early so as to knock academy clubs out of the top end of the draft.
North could bid pick 1, knowing that their offer will get matched. Costs Swans a bucket load. Costs North nothing.

When has this ever happened? In reality the complete opposite has happened. Blakey, Green etc all went for picks lower the predicted. Campbell was bid on where he was predicted to go.

To be fair, we lose games every year playing as the "home" side at an "away" venue. Hell, we were wearing our away kit when we played Hawthorn on Easter Monday - even though it was our home game. We have to play Hawthorn twice a year at the 'G, but they never come here. Same with Richmond, Collingwood and Essendon - because their bases are too big to actually acquiesce to playing at our "actual" home venue.

Just because we have to take a bus, instead of a plane, doesn't mean we don't face that exact same issue too. Hell, at least the AFL allows you guys to host home finals, we don't even get that.
The rules clearly state home state final

The rules are half the problem, lol, as they're used to justify inequities in the system that disproportionately benefit the 'Big 4' Melbourne clubs. You're getting Nick Daicos for free next year, plus you guys never leave Melbourne, probably not the best representatives to be arguing about equity among clubs/the 'rules.'

Pretty much nails it. Defs an issue with stocking up on junk picks to bid on a top 10 talent.

So let’s play the GF at Marvel if the Dogs finish top then?

I agree that should be rectified. But not by destroying the most successful youth development program in the country. Really, Geelong should have increased their stadium capacity when they redeveloped. I’m happy to play you there every week!

We have though? It used to be 28,000, it's not 36,000 and after stage 5 it will be 40,000 - that's getting pretty close to GABBA/Adelaide Oval/SCG/Marvel sort of numbers

There's no chance the Grand Final gets moved - as that's locked in until 2057. With that said, despite the MCG's contractual obligation to play at least one game there every week during finals - that should be altered -, the Dogs should absolutely get home finals at Marvel if they finish higher than say Richmond, Collingwood, us etc. Don't see why that should be any different for us, as we've earned the right to play at home, because we finished higher. Who cares about the crowd capacity/AFL coffers.

At 10, but it's more to the point, you again used a bunch of nothing picks to get him - 33, 38 and 39. That's pretty much the same scenario as Mills and Campbell

They’re not nothing picks. After those picks we selected McInerney, Fox, Wicks, and McLean. All are senior footballers, or close enough to it, in our current star studded lineup.

Of course Geelong should get home finals at the "litter box" where they are entitled to.

Don't throw barbs, it's actually been an enjoyable conversation with a few of the posters this morning, and I actually came back into it this morning to defend you guys when it comes to equity across the drafting process - by saying F/S should be eliminated too, to that Collingwood poster.

What barbs? Genuine question since you seem to be back spinning the same circles as yesterday.

You earned the right to a home state final and that’s where you play it in your home state. There is no conspiracy, it’s just the AFL turns it’s back on the rules when it suits them like the GWS Dogs prelim

Gotta love Collingwood supporters shrugging off their own advantages whilst weeping about others.

What was Travis Cloke paid to be on The Footy Show? After he cost you “junk” pick 39?

Got to love Swans fans looking at anyway possible to deflect from the rort that are the academies

Rort lol. Love the emotive language because the plucky Swans have dared to win 3 games in a row.

Lol....you say there's 'no conspiracy', yet you turn on a dime and say that the AFL changes the rules when it suits them...? Can you not see how that might be contradictory?

Furthermore, have you taken a look at your position on all of this?

This is how most posters are in this thread:

Sydney posters - Why all the hullabaloo over our academies when father/son still exists and players always want to leave our clubs, fix other inequities and we'll look at fixing this

Neutral posters - Some changes need to be made to the draft bidding process, perhaps an open first round or scrapping the discount for Academies and F/S

You - Changes need to be made to the academy but not to father son bidding. We don't need to change finals venues, as that's just the way it is. Player retention isn't an issue, but Northern clubs shouldn't complain when we do take their players

**************************************

You're probably the only poster on this forum that seems to have this view of 'change things that benefit them/leave things the way they are as it's tradition, but don't change things that benefit us'

Eddie would be proud.

Yeah it’s a rort. We pay nothing, in either effort or money. It’s just a free hit at the country’s best talent having done zero to develop that talent.

Piss off Eddie. Go fight with Port Adelaide about why your stripes are more spiritual than theirs.

Read all my posts, it's actually been a really constructive convo with you guys this morning - I've really enjoyed it and learned a lot re: your position and reasoning on everything. I've actually come to the conclusion that the best way is to probably leave the bidding process alone, but scrap the discount for both F/S and Northern academies, so that it's more equitable across the board - something that seems pretty reasonable to most Swans posters.

You guys generally have a very good crowd when we do play you, but with that said, we do love our home games lol
We South supporters don’t get many opportunities so we take those we get with open arms. Have to say the Geelong experience is far better than Hawthorn who send us to the top deck of a mostly empty mcg!

It’s only GWS and Gold Coast who are at a disadvantage when it comes to father sons and they get every other concession under the sun.

We need to get rid of NGAs they are a complete joke. No academy player is allowed to be matched in the first 2 rounds

The thing is if someone drafts a Swans kid they take a risk of them wanting to go home seeing that part of the reason the academy was introduced to fight the go home factor hurting these clubs disproportionately it still achieves its goals

There needs to be one rule across the board and honestly it's not hard and yes that INCLUDES F/S selections. Fair is fair. Can't have it both ways.

Always one of my fave games tbh, as it's always a ripping contest, and both club's supporters generally get along pretty well/aren't dicks to each other on game day

Surprised you still aren’t crying over COLA. The fact you can use a first rounder to target mature age players and bring in top end prospects with junk picks is a joke

It is at odds with the drafting system. A system that I hate

Better off just having zones across the entire country. If you cap list sizes and TPP both practices that are in place now you will see talent spread across the country if they can’t play in their home state.

Look at the NRL the Roosters and Storm have two of the smallest junior programs doesn’t hold them back
